I had never heard of PJB stuff before until I tested a PJB briefcase - I have to say that is the best sounding combo I have ever heard .. and the suitcase seems to follow in kind.
Seriously, I have no idea why phil jones amps are not used by more people, they sound awesome..
(and no, I don't get sponsored by them.. although: if you are reading this, phil... :)
JEEZus christ mate....CUT TO THE CHASE and PLAY instead of TALK TALK TALKING......Americans REALLY DO talk too much.
If we all just cut to 3:27 you can finally hear him play.
Great sounding amp though.
And, as far as GUITAR CENTER is concerned, DO NOT BUY ANY of those guitar cords that are strung around a pole near the cash register. They look alright but they're cheapos that go for $14.95 and they break all the fucking time.
This is the same kind of sales man that plays what he wants to play on a guitar when you ask to demo an amp. He will never hand the guitar to you so you can try the amp out.
I guess I'm a lucky guy...I've never had to deal with someone like that. Maybe it's because when I'm in the zone with my bass in my hands I ignore everything else around me...so maybe I just kind of ignore those people.
You missed my point. The salesguy never hands the axe over because he is too involved with his demonstration. I don't care how involved you are in your head but it isn't with the axe because he is holding it.
It doesn't happen often but you get the guys that have been salesmen for all their lives and are still stuck in the demo mode. I like GC for the fact you can play any of their stock without some salesman needlessly harassing you.
Your so full of yourself bet you clear a crowd in a matter of seconds, TALK TALK TALK TALK BLAH BLAH BLAH, dude, are u that hung up on your own voice?
Good idea with the DI/Amp on different channel except...it doesn't work on youtube. Youtube encode audio as 22050Hz 63 kb/s MONO signal. So both channels gets summed to mono, not a great thing to get a sense of the sound IMO.
i'm a big phil jones bass fan...just not his cabs, he makes probably the greatest tube bass amp on the planet. 600 watts, 130 lbs, built like an armored truck ...problem though, you'd have to rob that truck cause it costs $10,000. ampeg cabs extra!!

5 inch drivers, hahaha, for bass, hahaha, well it sounds like 5 inch drivers, hahaha, what a shitty amp+cabinet. what's the use of this bloody totally characterless thing?
erasr is right. Jones knows his engineering. There are (4) 5" drivers, now I'm no physics whiz, but I know sound is about the amount of air and vibrations produced. Arguably, this would be the same as having (2) 10" speakers. The only difference is that it might not have as low of a frequency response. But on the other hand having smaller drivers means more visceral sound because you don't have a huge speaker flopping around, giving faster response for quick runs(jazz).
He's a guy who owns a music shop explaining the features on an amplifier, there's meant to be a fair bit of talking too. If you wanna hear someone mess about on bass for a solid 8 minutes then go watch a video that isn't a PLAY TEST.
Everyone shut the hell up and listen - this guy preps everyone with some very great advice... He'll tell you exactly how his bass/amp/playing approach is organized... Great player and great teacher... then he plays for you... trust me I know this dude and he tours the world with the upper crust. Very supportive player -
i was excited about the PJB amps, but strictly from this video, (and it could very easily be the bass or the mic) that amp has some terrible tone. (just way too much treble from 5" speakers, with some definite influence from new strings on a bongo)
do try listening to the clip with headphones on. as for the "too much treble".... the high end that comes off of Phil's speakers is considerably less harsh and abrasive than a typical bass cab with a horn in it. Ultimately, try to get to a store and check one out, they do have the sweetest top end of any cab, very natural and like I said, non-abrasive.
Pete! You sound great man! I just tried the Bass Buddy basically as a pre-amp for my EUB. Plugged into the Bass Buddy and sent the signal straight into my SVT - crazy tone and punch - great bottom end...
Thats nuts im from calgary as well, from what i can tell the store you're in looks alot like the wall of MCC on 37th, and have you tried the yamaha BBT?
It sounds great! Super powerful Low B!

as I said to some guy on the video where he talks more.
There is the same amount of surface area in 4 5" speakers as 1 10".
So having 2 10" drives would be double the surface area
