In 1994 tropical strom alberta stalled over central georgia causing flooding that washed out many roads and bridges, one of which was the Auchumpkee Creek covered bridge. After the waters subsided crews went into the swamp and recovered all of the timbers from the bridge that hey could. They then used the timbers and a photograph to reconstruct the bridge. Today the new bridge is still standing strong though closed to vehicle traffic. Covered Bridges are trult a unique part of history.
i lived near this bridge as a kid and i can still remember the soft shadows inside it, and dropping stones through the diamond-shaped holes to watch them fall into the water. seeing it go is like seeing a beloved tree fall. i can hardly stop the tears.
omg!!!! this is soooo sad - i am sorry for you paul (interviewed on the weather station) and others who are going to miss this wonderful treasure! i actually had this recurring nightmare while living next to a PA covered bridge for 30 years - thankfully it never happened & the bridge to this day is still in fine and in sturdy shape.
