I don't think too many people understand Shandling. He's one of the few comedians who blur the line between his on-stage persona and actual personality. This is Shandling's forte: making people feel uncomfortable by not conforming to societal norms. In essence, he's the original Larry David.

Seems most people here didn't get it. Garry is at a stage in his life where he is beyond the fake smiling, fake excitement, and act that most of us put on everyday. He thought Ricky was doing this, so he wanted to try to get Ricky to drop the mask. Read the GQ interview with Garry.
Garry is partly right about Ricky's keyed up act, but the other part which he maybe doesn't get is that Ricky is excited to meet one of his idols. The two guys just have very different energy.

Most painful hour of my life watching this. Shandling came across with all the charm of an oozing scab. His attitude towards the Nazi element of Gervais' comedy was totally unfounded. Britain had the Nazis LONG before America did. Jewish people don't own the rights to take the piss out of Germany's second world war history. Despite Garry's intentions, and I believe Ricky said this, as well, I think coming off as a twat really spoiled the interview because it's apparent Ricky was looking for something very similar to what he got with Larry David and didn't get anything.

1) you never see interviews like this, 2) both guys are known for antagonistic comedy that exploits awkward situations, and 3) you don't like thinking that two of your favorite comedians didn't go down a storm together. those aren't enough to make me think it's "fake". Where Ricky is at the time this was filmed, Garry got there 15 years ago; mockumentary-awkward realism comedy is super-in, and Garry was too ahead of his time to really cash in. I don't think too many people understand Shandling. He's one of the few comedians who blur the line between his on-stage persona and actual personality. Also understand that Shandling has been doing this type of comedy which has greatly influenced Gervais (which is why Gervais chose to interview him) so Shandling is having some fun with him. This is Shandling's forte: making people feel uncomfortable by not conforming to societal norms. In essence, he's the original Larry David.

Gervais is destroyed in this clip. He will never be in Shandling's league. This is an example of a comic trying really hard, and someone naturally talented just being himself and managing to completely show somebody up without try-hard cackles or desperate pleas to "talk about when I'm funny". Seems most people here didn't get it. Garry is at a stage in his life where he is beyond the fake smiling, fake excitement, and act that most of us put on everyday. He thought Ricky was doing this, so he wanted to try to get Ricky to drop the mask. Read the GQ interview with Garry.
Garry is partly right about Ricky's keyed up act, but the other part which he maybe doesn't get is that Ricky is excited to meet one of his idols. The two guys just have very different energy.

This is the reason why Ricky Gervais is a genius in his own right, he challenge the publics views on what is/isent allowed to say. None of his holocaust jokes were in bad taste, they were a very witty way around a very touchy area.
However if this was infact all acting.. Well done cause they really caught me off guard :)

@kalifire Wow, how wrong you are. Extras was fantastic, which is why it won those awards. His stand is just as great. You have terrible taste in comedy if you cant enjoy the genius that Gervais is.

Most painful hour of my life watching this. Shandling came across with all the charm of an oozing scab. His attitude towards the Nazi element of Gervais' comedy was totally unfounded. Britain had the Nazis LONG before America did. Jewish people don't own the rights to take the piss out of Germany's second world war history. Britain was bombed to fuck during the early 40's and England in particular has always delighted in taking a dig at Germany every chance they get. End of story.
