It's kinda the same reason many black metal bands like to record on tapes. This sense of being undercover and unknown makes the music appear darker, for example, could you imagine Darkthrone making a music video with Christina Agulera (however the hell you spell it) on MTV? No, it doesnt fit. I agree with you at parts, but I think its mainly an artistic choice.
