Of course Dave can play guitar! He played on ice cream man, the full bug, take your whiskey home, and maybe even could this be magic? What do you think he did before VH? He sang and played guitar! I'm shocked that people are surprised he can play.
David Lee Roth is absolutely unbelievable. He's (arguably) the greatest rock n' roll frontman ever. And an accomplished painter. A master martial artist. He's sailed up and down the Amazon. Climbed the highest peaks at Yosemite. Has a mind full of endless cultural & literary references. AND, he's a talented guitar player. as well!!! Seriously, the guy is unbelievable...
When I first heard this many years ago I was amazed, it just confirmed what I already knew, Dave is a damn good acoustic guitarist. There`s no telling what else he could have did. Listen to VH unreleased "Angel Eyes" which is Dave doing a acoustic number without any help. I could listen to DLR play acoustic all day. DLR has far more talent than he`s given credit for.
This is from a Jim Ladd interview probably KLOS or KMET in Los Angeles. He even refers to Jim during the song. I had taped this off the radio at one time. Who knows where that tape is at. It was a funny interview. Sometime between 1980-81.
When I saw them 2 years ago, Dave came out playing this really intricate fingerstyle guitar stuff. He was walking around and talking like nothing was going on. I knew he did few parts here and there, but he was GOOD!
SEXY Voice !!!!!!!!!!! I like Dave anyway he does it. I think that is him playing. I saw VH in Houston last week and he can kick some lick on a guitar.
This is actually a cover- an old band you might've heard of- Humble Pie made 79th and Sunset for their '71 album, Rock On, only with a somewhat different melody and guitars, but the same lyrics and bluesy feel.
This song is from the Jim Ladd radio show in 1982 during the Diver Down era. Ladd was interviewing Alex Van Halen and DLR when Dave broke out the guitar and played this live. Maybe I'll post the whole interview someday.
Getting my tickets tomorrow! I am doing a Van Halen tribute on jflradio dot com Mon Aug 20th from 7pm-9pm EST. This will be the real Van Halen, the Roth years! I am playing music and interviews, there is a shoutbox there for comments and fan participation.
Lyrically Sammy BLOWS Dave away!!!!! Much more mature music then with Dave.. Eddie of course kicked ass whenever.. Check Dave out in concert sounds like he singing different tune then record..Seen 8 DLR concerts and 10 Sammy. SAMMY wins handsdown!!! But it will b cool to see then together. Hopefully they can finish the whole tour.
When this fucking tour happens I want to see Dave & Ed break out the acoustics somewhere in the middle of the set. They could do this one, "Could This Be Magic", maybe even "Goin' Places" from the DLR Band album, and finish it up with "Take Your Whiskey Home"
@phlizmo- can't be, it's not on Eddie's channel. Ed always uses the left channel, the acoustic parts are in the middle.

This sounds eerily similar to "Women and Children First" from the album of the same name.
