You normally use calves when you want to get a quick burst of speed forward (i.e. football, soccer, baseball, basketball, tennis, etc). Wrestling is 3-dimensional, not straight forward.

Most of those who have commented recently fail to understand this is an older vid. The style of dress was common in high school, college and amateur wrestling up to 1965. It didn't seem to harm the wrestlers any. And one of them is wearing ear guards, which are a good idea.
