2) Tommy had killed others (including Ronald Jerothe - another connected man). Next line in the movie is Henry's narration of what happened: "It was revenge for Billy Batts - and a lot of other things..."

That is hard to believe though, Ray is outstanding.

So when the Gambinos started doing their own investigation someone probably told them about Tommy and Batt's shoe box argument. They put 2 and 2 together and zeroed in on Tommy.

@doz222 billy batts also had a loan sharking book. while he was away in prison Jimmy had taken it over. so it was in Jimmys interests to whack Batts too, but he would have been more subtle, (you didnt fuck with the Gambinos, they were 8 times bigger than Lucchese) I bet he licked his lips when he told Tommy to go home and get his fuckin shinebox.

This always made me wonder why De Niro didn't get whacked. They BOTH killed Billy Batts. And Liotta obviously was involved in the death too although he didn't touch Batts but he was still involved. I always wondered why they only killed Pesci.

@nyyanksrdbest Nobody outside of Henry and Jimmy saw the Batts murder but there were eyewitnesses to Tommy's reaction to the shoebox comment which makes Tommy look like the prime suspect . Henry & Jimmy were being peacemakers then so they seemed less likely to wanna kill Batts based on an eyewitness' story. So when the Gambinos started doing their own investigation someone probably told them about Tommy and Batt's shoe box argument. They put 2 and 2 together and zeroed in on Tommy.

@nyyanksrdbest Okay I know you've gotten about bunch of answers to this, but if you do your research you'll find out the truth was this. Pauly began having an affair with Karen Hill. Tommy found out about this and while Henry was in prison figured he could get him some and one night went to Karen's place. She refused and he tried to rape her. Pauly finds out about this and to get back at Tommy he lets the Gambinos (Billy's mafia family) know that Tommy killed Billy Batts. Truth story.

its fucked up because if Billy Batts hadnt started talking shit at the bar that night then this wouldnt have happened. Batts started it and is ultimately the reason why Tommy ended up getting killed, i mean Tommy could have taken the 'high road' but he would have lost a lot of face among his peers and he couldnt have that

@MrZakiman Exactly...also unless there was a witness not shown in the movie, only three people knew what really happened Billy Batts that night. Everyone else there had already left, and they would only remember that Tommy had blown his stack over the 'shine box' comment earlier in the same night that Billy disappeared. Word gets around; Tommy gets made.

@dsepan in the book 'wise guy' i think Henry said that when Tommy came back, there was still like 2 or 3 people having dinner and he told them to get out because Tommy and Billy had a beef and they left. but you're right anyway, the people at the bar would have remembered Tommy flipping out and saying 'keep him here' like he was gonna come back and do something.

Yes Tommy had a temper and sometimes he slap people for no reason, but he was still a sweet and caring human being who loved people.
