Lovely bass tone, enjoyed much. My only critiques are some German vowels (dem) could be better pronounced, and the second in to take adequate breathing lag-time- don't rush. First class voice.
There is just not enough music of this magnificent voice available... I am so gratefuil for this upload as I have not heard this before... and what a magnificent roar!
@zegermans750 Kurt Moll's voice was more lyrical than Talvela's, although both singers have sung such "black" Wagner parts as Hunding or Daland (on stage). But, so far as I remember, Moll never sang Hagen. Talvela did. That makes quite a difference: Talvela's voice sounds so directly black and powerful, not only bright. Moll's voice was large enough to sing Wagner parts such as Marke or even Fafner and Hunding., but he was not a "heroic" bass. Talvela had much more "direct" vocal strength (IMO).
this is the aria my father first heard when he was 4 years old, and convinced him he wanted to be a singer. we saw talvela together at the met in boris and also in recital. wonderful performances. thanks for posting this, it brings back some wonderful memories.
@pesi67 I agree. They seem to be the only ones who do not have to strain to reach the depths. I saw Martti in Berlin and it was always a great experience.
We heard Verdi's Requiem last evening done competently, or better.
However the standard was set in 1967 by Sutherland, Horne, Pavarotti and Talvela. It is a joy to listen to the remastered London/Decca recording conducted by Solti.
It's hard to imagine that four greater soloists will ever come together again to perform this work.
- I think this fast vibrato is one of the things which give his singing fantastic dramatic and emotional power.
(At 2:32-3:00 it's a picture of someone else; at least that's not his handwriting).
Tomorrow, 4th February 2010, he'd be 75. Happy Birthday to Martti! How he is missed.
@sarastrone : de nada, you're welcome - and I didn't want to be a little know-it-all nuisance...!! It's just that I have a copy of his published diaries and memoirs, in which there are 2 pages in his own hand. Gracias, thank you, for all the great uploads!
Legato is much to fast, I don´t like that.
The late, great Martti Talvela was one of my musical gods. He was a physically imposing yet regal performer who possessed one of the most remarkable and beautiful voices of the 20th century. He left us much too soon. His Grand Inquisitor from Don Carlo is one of the great things; a massive column of sound that communicates concisely the brutality that was the Inquisition. I've heard many others tackle the role but Martti owned it, as if though Verdi had written for him and him alone.
@wolfgang731 I agree. But although he was physically imposing, he never overshadowed the other singers. I am not sure how he managed to do that. I also found that he pronounced the German words the most clearly, clearer even than Moll, who was after all a native speaker. Yes, I loved him, too.
wow what an amazing voice! I have just been given this piece of music, to learn a few hours ago. I do not speak German but assume the pronunciation is spot on, being Martti Talvela. thank for posting this fantastic video.
