  • If you take a look at tigers swing back when he was winning all those majors, and around the time he published is book "Tiger Woods : How I Play Golf" You'll notice that he actually doesn't have the toe of the club pointed to the sky and the face is more or less "closed". SwingMan I'd say you've got it right with this one. Now if only we could get Tiger to take a look at what he's written. Maybe he'd start winning a tourney or two finally. Great video, keep'em comin'.

  • So i dont hold my cock as long as possible?

  • wow, that's great. im sure tiger never noticed that about his swing.

  • @silowhore Funny eh? It makes such logical sense...yet it's not very commonly taught because it's so outside-of-the-box of what falls under normal and "correct" mechanics.

  • @SwingManGolf tiger practices from sun up to sun down and will hit 1000 balls a day practicing one element of his swing alone, has won 14 majors and 71 pga wins, which is 3rd all time, and will probably win more. he has worked with people whom are considered some of the foremost experts in the field of golf instruction that have ever lived, and you're telling me he could fix his swing with this simple advice and he along with anyone else that instructs him has ever thought of it? not likely

  • @silowhore Whatever direction he goes he still will have to put in the time to get his myelin tracks worked out...but yes, in my experience both as a teacher and player, I absolutely think it would be a lot easier for him to hit straighter this way.

  • @SwingManGolf I think moe norman said it best when he said "just hit this dumb guy, into that dumb guy" :P

  • @silowhore Hehe, yeah, there's definitely a lot to be said for that. Words of wisdom!

  • 1:13-1:15 HAHAHA The cock is held as long as possible!

  • 2:22 hahaha halarious

  • its not holding the hands cocked for longer it,s the leg movement that gives lag the hands are just natural.

  • @dschultz6072 - No, not at all. Why would it be? You can block the ball with any type of release.

  • @jaacobbowden ah, i see what you're trying to teach now. my mistake. i don't know why i interpreted this move as a pushing action. i think i'm actually doing the action you're teaching and i don't know it. it must have been a treat to have sat down with austin, no matter how gruff he might have been. ;)

  • the trouble with holding your cock as long as possible, you end up dropping your balls!

  • That's a good point, I'm going to try it on the range tomorrow :)

  • The "roll" also adds distance, because it whips the clubhead right at impact.

  • @harryhansenmusic - in most cases, the overall average distance for most people is probably less with a rolling hand action though because solid contact is more difficult to make each time. Not to mention a rolling club face introduces a timing variable that makes it really tough to be consistently accurate.

  • If you hold your cock as long as possible wont it be hard to hit the ball

  • 4! lol

  • That sounds like something i would watch... lol

  • I found my error with the irons. Didnt cock wrist, and bad grip. I went from hitting 1-2 greens to 6-9 greens. I am hitting it really solid, but I because i always hit irons left and right all i did was aim straight, so i have no idea how to aim.

BTW anyone know how to save a video on youtube to be opened up in another program?

  • I should also mention im a 9-13 hc at a 6800 yard course.

  • Well when I hit the ball straight or light draw, I can hit driver 295-310 consistantly. 3 wood 255-270 consistantly, PW 150 and rest of irons go 10 yards up per club. Problem is consistancy lol. My problem is to big of draws with woods, and push fades with irons. The draws are created by a flat swing and not pressing arms out to ball, and push by getting right arm stuck because I sway big time on the downswing. Any tips?

  • @jvallstar36 Have you ever had your lie angles fit to your swing before? That could be part of the problem with the irons.

  • @jaacobbowden that (the lie angle fitting comment) is such good advice, yet people can still think they've got bad swings even when the swing looks and feels great and can be repeated time and time again. which is easier? adjusting your swing or adjusting your clubs?

  • this is what i was looking for i think :)

  • Angled Hinge Action according to "The Golfing Machine". You'll lose distance... but it may work

  • Hahahahaha! The cock is held as along as possible.........released....... that's pure gold right there

  • I was taught to turn my wrist when I took golf lesson's when I was 17 and I've had a on and off hook ever since. It is very difficult to perfect that type of swing.

  • @kentuckydrb I just recently cured a hook by opening the club slightly, so when you are hooking after turning your wrists it means you must be turning back too much before impact... right?

  • Although his analogy using loaf of bread makes sense, only way to hit a pure shot is to make a smooth roll using both your wrist, arm and shoulder and your lower body. When you are making your swing in an ideal swing plane the only time you are making a square contact with the ball should for a splits of a second.

  • @times0523 this guy wishes he worked with tiger

  • I try to hold my cock as long as I can as well.

  • This guy knows the action in the swing but fails to realize it's the only way to do it for a fluid, relaxed, effortless, whipping swing. His demonstration of Tiger's swing is spot on, and Tiger knows it too.

  • lol this teacher views himself as the superior golfer in terms of swing knowledge

  • @TheMrAlwaysRight - Actually, I don't. :-p Golf and life are a lifelong learning experience and I'm always open to refining how I look at things.

  • Simple Golf Tips, Guaranteed to Lengthen Your Drive and Shave 7 Strokes. Check it here bit*ly/simple-golf-swing (please change * for .)

  • "The cock is held as long as possible" lol

  • the cock should be held as long as possible before releasing it

it is the best way to do it

  • @cmares58 with a final Re-cocking at the end of the sequence.

  • This is a good analysis of club swing and deviation during the swing and something to think about if u r experiencing hook and excessive spin to the right.. Thx, helped me.

  • next time you show a video, you might acutally demonstrate what you are talking about, you know what they say, those who cant do teach !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • "if i were to teach tiger" well you aint. i cant believe the crap out there in information. TAKE 100 GOLFERS AND YOU WILL HAVE 100 DIFFERENT SWING PATHS/PATTERNS. a proper player will say 1 day 2my triceps are tight- so i decrease the down swing speed, forearms are sensitive today- so i create more flick, hips are loose today, so i increase my stance put foot further back and smack it. remember..1 DIMENSION LEARNING= 1 DIMENSIONAL PLAY. IM A PRO -SO I KNOW

  • In the end it's all about Swing Path, Clubface, and having as Less Moving Parts as you can without losing power.

Why don't they ever get it, Jaacob?

  • I practice Joe Dante's swing with a somewhat strong grip too Jaacob. I have quite flexible wrists, so I can handle the follow through :) The only thing I don't overdo in the Joe Dante swing is the exaggerated forward press, and the early completed set of the club. it's there, but not as much. I think Dante & Shauger is very similar in many important parts of the swing & Joe had the only real scientific swing imo, and I've read up & practiced them all! No small feat.

  • This theory is CERTAINLY NOT idiotic. If you knew anything about the golf swing, you'd know this is serious stuff. This is very much what Joe Dante teached in "Four magic moves to winning golf" back in 1962. I rate it as the absolute BEST instructional book to date. This swing is about using a vertical hinge and using a square-to-square swing type with more passive hands and absolutley no roll. Real good stuff actually.

  • I need to pull that book out again. It's sitting in storage. :p

I've come across a number of different hand actions. The hinge & roll is most common, but unfortunately seems to be the most difficult to master (maybe it's done on purpose so people have to keep taking lessons?). For accuracy, I like a dead hands type swing. There's a power loss..but it's super straight. For power and accuracy, I like the vertical hinge towards the rear shoulder with a strong grip - sort of a chop motion. :)

  • thanks for the first part not i know how to swing like tiger fuck the other half of the vid

  • wait so why are we throwing loaves of bread?

  • to theEvenlonger: about your billionaire friend...sorry I am not going to respond to your e-mails about the money transfers from Nigeria either. In other words, maybe you're holding the cock too long?

  • gdobbs73, yes, there are a lot of scams out there, but the reference is actually legit and I've been working on a proposal. :-p

  • Saying that Tiger is the best iron player on Tour is subjective. Most amateurs and pros open the club face because that is what is conventionally and popularly taught...not because it's necessarily the "best" thing to do. This type of hand action does not lead to a reverse pivot as it is a hand action and not a pivot action. Some people do want to miss on the left...and yes, you can get a draw to stick just as well as a fade with a certain spin rate and launch angle.

  • This guy is an idiot. There is a reason why Tiger is the best iron player on tour. Hardly any good pros play with a shut club face and this swing leads to a reverse pivot move into the ball. Nobody wants to hit to hit the ball left and thats all you can do with this swing. Like lee trevino says, "you can talk to a fade, but a hook won't listen"

  • You're not really paying attention to what he's saying. You can't release by rolling your forearms over like tiger does with this hand action but you can hit it very straight and will great velocity more consistently. Look up Dan Shauger and open you mind.

  • The cock is held as long as possible 1:12

  • i chuckled there too :)

  • Dear Jaacob.

You´re right too. Making the living with the short game is much more important than hitting the longest shots on tour even if you could!

How much money do you need to be sponsored a full season?

Do you play the regular PGA tour... I never heard about you on tour?

  • Yeah, hehe, in 2008 Corey Pavin (261.4 yards) scoring average of 70.67 was lower than Bubba Watson's (315.1 yards) 71.07. Power can help and is fun, but it's not the most important thing to scoring.

I'm lucky enough to be making enough from my golf website to live on, however, to get out and play full time 25-30 tournaments I'd need about $25-30k more to cover all the initial travel costs. Tournament golf basically runs about $1k/week minimum to play.

  • I've played in one event sanctioned by the Federation of PGA Tours, tried US Open and British Open (missed advancing by 3) qualifying once each, and have played a number of other 3rd and 4th level professional events. Earlier this season I made a cut with a 71-68.

Golf is kinda funny. To have a real shot at making it to the big Tours, you need full-season support of some kind so you can play year round and be sharp competition-wise when it comes time for the PGA Tour Qualifying each Fall.

  • That sounds good Jaacob... but your talent I think is to teach the Mike Austin Swing. You´re explanation is very well.

I did not believe in succesful teaching against popular techniques for populace. PGA teachers will ever try to attack your person and your knowledge!

This kind of swing is more usable for golfers who really go for it... like me.

    See you online Jaacob

  • I'm hoping to play full-time this upcoming season, but it'll depend on whether I make enough money on my own or I get some sort of backing.

I've got four events lined up for January/February...and at the least I'm planning US and British Open qualifying because I used to practice at Pebble Beach and I love St. Andrews. A dream Open lineup for the year if you ask me.

If you know of anyone that's interested in discussing sponsorship options, send me a private message. :-)

  • The sponsorship is the reason I asked for your needed money Jaacob.

I will do my very best.

I did it once to a german Pro who played 3rd and 4th level professional events. Unfortunately he didn´t do it well enough.

  • Jaacob, my past employer was highly involved in sponsoring sportsmen. He is an patron of arts, owner of one of the largest art collections in the world (worth 200 million €) and a close friend of the Dalai Lama and other prominent people.

He is one of the 20 richest people in the world (7 billion €).

He has got 60.000 Employees around the world. If you have any clear concept to satisfy him, I will make a connection for you.

    What do you think Jaacob?

  • Thanks, responded via private message. ;-)

  • Hi Jaacob.

What are the carry distances of all of your clubs?

Is the snapping of vertical wrists a reaction to the power of the swing or is it powered by massive muscle power of the forearms?

    Let me know swingman

  • It really depends on how many power pieces I take in & out of my swing. For example, with my 43-degree iron (for my iron set that's a 9-iron), I hit right around the PGA Tour average (measured over the last 4 seasons) of 136 yards. When I straighten my left arm a little more, increase my x-factor, & change my grip so I can get more lag with a square clubface but without having to roll my forearms in the back & downswing, I can get a smooth180 yards out of my 9-iron (no wind, 1339' elevation).

  • Thanks Jaacob.

But why don´t you use all power pieces all the time. 136 yards isn´t really long at all.

When sense does it make to shorten your carry distances in a competition. With the meatball method your balls are allwas dead straight.

  • Excuse me Jaacob.

    The correct question is:

What sense does it make to shorten...

    Sorry again.

  • Yeah, I know what you mean. I debate that with myself a lot actually. I think it just comes down to a matter of comfort and time I have available in the day. I still have to work a lot to cover my bills and pay my own way to tournaments. The 136 swing just how I naturally swing and it's simple for me to repeat without much practice. You're right in that it's not that far, but it's still the Tour average and thus is far enough to play well from the tournament tees.

  • I think if my income was higher and/or I had a full-season sponsor like some of my peers, I would spend that extra time grooving and making the other swing natural.

  • i cud teach him to put extra 200 / 300 yards on his shots, but practise makes perfect so he doing ok 4 ameteur - well done

  • great player i wish i was as good as tiger woods ..... who know's im getting lessons at exeter golfr driving range and getting good deals at 4golfonline, one day i could be as good as tiger.

  • im new to golf. does this technique reflect swinging irons as well?

  • Yes. :-)

  • 1:13 "On the way back down the Cock is held as long as possible." hahahahahaha

  • hahahaha

  • Jaacob, I found an excellent drill for this: Get an empty half keg from a beer store and throw it. It seriously works because your hands work in the same manner as the opposite-rotation in this swing. It's helped me a lot. Thanks again Jaacob, as usual, great tips! -KS

  • Haha, awesome. Great idea!

  • I am new to golf and I slice with my driver often. This tip straightened out my drive tremendously. I still hit my drives high and about 220 though. Any tips on hitting drives low and long?

  • One thing would be to look in to getting custom fit for your driver. People with different swing speeds, angles of attack, etc require different driver head and shaft setups to get a good launch angle and spin rate to maximize their distance.

Look through the videos in this channel - we've got a couple that can help you figure out a driver that fits your game. :-)

  • this guy makes sense and i appreciate his video. I will try it out.

  • Best pasrt.. "the cock is held as long as possible" ROTFLMAO.. man I spit coffee on that one. lol

  • This guy is good, straight up. I understood everything he was talking about and I think it will help my game. Chea SwingManGolf!

  • this guy knows his stuff and is easy to listen to. As usual some people are going to criticize BUT most are hackers anyway

  • ya right, listen to the guy who tells you not to swing like the best golfers in the world. what a clown shoe. who are you and what are your credentials?

  • Before you critique, have you even tried it to see if it might work for you?

Even the best have things that they can improve on...ask Tiger himself.

  • Credentials - to name a few - I'm a PGA Member, have taught hundreds of individual lessons, have thousands of members to my Swing Man Golf website with lots of great legitimate testimonials, have hit a grid record 421-yard drive in a RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship Qualifier, won one of the Pinnacle Distance Challenges with a 381-yard televised drive, been interviewed by the Golf Channel, was a guest on ESPN Radio, & have posted multiple rounds in the 60s from the back tees in pro tournies.

  • I believe the final line after listing such credentials is Tom Lehman's famous "T-t-take a suck on that one!" :-D

  • this guy sounds just like bill paxton

  • is that the guy out of twister? Yes, he does.

  • I practiced this exact same technique today at the driving range with great success. I wasn't intentionally trying to emulate Tiger's swing, but my drives were all over the place. I still have the occasional and unintentional draw or fade, but my hooks and slices were gone completely. Now if I can only do it on the course. My short game still sucks though and I'll always be a hack. Tired of being in corn/bean fields off the tee though so maybe this will help.

  • Why the harsh words? The video is critical...but it is also a logical and respectful assessment.

  • there really are some cunts in this world, every video i look at reguarding golfing lessons are good tips and advice, things that have helped tried and tested, speaks the truth in that tiger does miss the fairway and explains why... i dont think hes gonna wanna jump on his bandwagon on youtube. is WhitePac40 his boyfriend or something cos if he licks tigers arse anymore he will be clean shaven with a white arse... if u comment u must watch, golfer ursen? listen and grow up ya impulsive twat

  • Jaacob, I've been golfing for 8 years and this is the best tip I've ever heard. I'm still having a bit of trouble with the occasional duck hook because my hands still want to manipulate the clubhead, but other than that, my game has improved tremendously. Thank you Jaacob. -KS

P.S. It's nice to see you using the One Iron golf club in this video too! I use the Tommy Armour EQLs.

  • It is indeed a 1iron club! I've never tried the EQLs, but I'm sure I would like them since the concept is the same as the 1irons. Pure Fit Golf is the other company that I'm aware of that does same length clubs.

Yeah, when you are used to having to roll back over on the way down...the occasional duck hook is a common miss at first.

I'm happy to hear of your tremendous improvement!

  • at 1:15 he says "you hold the cock as long as possible" lol

  • Dont forget the finish dude

  • Haha. at 0:21 One can hear : FORE!" And there's glitch in the video;)

  • Thats not a glitch. It's an edit.

  • Haha, I never heard the "FORE!" before...good catch. Very observant about the edit too. I'm good at ad-libbing on camera, but for these videos I actually scripted everything out and was reading from cue cards below the camera. I'd read a page or so at a time and then we edited it all together when we got home. I find that pre-scripted videos are a little bit more concise...and it's easier to speak clearly and stay on topic.

  • In all seriousness, first day on the range trying this and my slice has completely dissapeared

  • Glad to hear it's helped! :-)

  • 1:12, my favorite quote

  • I have a lot of respect for Jaacob, and he seems like a great guy, but damn that quote is hilarious!!! X-D

  • he clearly knows wht hes talking about, iv have just started playing golf myself so im not gona say hes wrong or anything since i dont know much on golf

  • do you havce any videos of you actually doing this and hitting balls?

  • Dan Shauger teaches a counter-rotating swing on his website. That's what spawned the "Spin the Meatballs" explanation video on the SwingManGolf YouTube Channel. We've also got a video internally on the Swing Man Golf website that's gets in to several kinds of hand actions...including some different analogies to explain how the counter rotation works.

  • There's also a video on YouTube called "Jaacob Bowden Driver Swing" that endofct? posted from one of Dan's DVDs. It's just a subtle looking difference from a conventional swing, but the accuracy is quite different.

  • this guy is talking rubbish!!

  • What is the logic behind your opinion?

  • thx that help so much

  • the second swing you showed us would cause a hook at times if you tend to roll your wrist. i use the second swing and i gennerally draw the ball and sometimes hit a low hookie shot. i might try this swing out tomorrow and i might actually hit it straight without the big draw

  • My original wrist-hinge caused me to slice; ie the handshake position. I regularly failed to bring the clubface back to square at impact in an attempt to gain more distance by holding the hinge as long as possible before impact. The trouble was that my timing and technique meant that on many occasions I presented an open club face, or even the hossle of the club to the ball. When I did manage to time it, the distance was improved; however, was it worth the inconsistency. The technique above is

  • really good advice and would advise anyone to give it a go. I have only been playing just under 2 yrs and attempted to emulate the pro's after attending The Open at Birkdale last year. Since then I have stuggled to score below 100 due to inaccuracy of shots. I have tried this twice since last week and have broke 90 twice, the second of which was 83 on a par 71. The technique definitely works for me. Just a shame I didn't find this back in August.

  • This really is great advice. I personally have tried over the last ten months to emulate the professionals with the wrist-hinge action. Consequently, I have been struggling with timing and hitting big slice's and sometimes shanks. It was only last week, before seeing this video, that I tried altering my wrist hinge by using the counter rotation detailed hear. Distance and accuracy is now back. It really is great advice, it may not be for everyone; however, I would certainly advise giving it a go

  • your right wrist is hinged through impact then released on the follow through....do it like he's telling you you will end up with fades and slices

  • Why would it cause a slice? From a physics standpoint, a slice is caused by an open blade relative to the swing path. While it's possible to slice with just about any hand motion, this particular one keeps the blade closer to square relative to the swing path longer than a conventional rolling hand action.

  • In my experience, people slice LESS with this hand motion...and often actually hook or draw the ball more at first because they are used to having to roll the blade closed on the downswing - which they no longer have to do using a counter-rotation on the backswing.

  • well my instructor said i should do it and it turned out great. Every shot was a draw.

  • Glad to see the concept working for you. The tour players are so good because they know where the blade is and rotate an open blade to "hit " the ball where they want. They don't swing for perfection they are constantly adjusting with their swing to the course. It looks the same but the rythm makes it consistent. I would not know personally how to time a club face already share to the ball... seems like I'd have to slow down rather than accelerate. But if it works, A+++++!! Happy golfing!

  • the bread analogy is a very good one. i've practiced with both "swing types" and i must say that i prefer "rolling" the club as it's simply always been my natural swing, but i still think that this is great advice.

  • There's definitely something to be said for making your natural swing motion. One can be freed up to "play golf" on the course instead of "playing golf swing".

  • hahhahahahahah 1:13

  • its a good video. just that that that one part was funny.

  • Prick! Wouldn't trust him with children.

  • the cock is held as long as possible

  • Hehe, I didn't even realize I said that until after we had finished filming the video. We thought about taking the video down and re-shooting it...but it was such a funny slip that we decided to keep it up. :-p

  • More or less, yes. At that point in the swing, the leading edge of the club is basically perpendicular relative to the swing path - or square back to the ball...rather than 45 degrees open with the toe pointed up to the sky as typical conventional teaching advocates. I find it's much easier to hit straight with the club more square to the swing path through the hitting area like this, as opposed rolling the blade over and through.

  • Are you saying that at the half way point,(shaft parallel to ground). the face of the club is parallel to your spine angle formed at address.? Yes. Jim

  • Thanks, glad to help. I agree in that a counter rotation of sorts can lead to better ball striking, but you can still be a good ball striker with the conventional roll (r.e. we have a separate video about ball striking that you can watch on our Swing Man Golf channel). Rather, I think the greater benefit with this type of hand action is found in mitigating unwanted ball curvature. This translates to higher levels of hitting to targets more precisely...which can then lead to lower scores.

  • Excellent instruction. The counter rotation is key to great ball striking. Thanks Jaacob.
