Howto - access firefox profile manager for Vista and Xp

I cannot get the profile manager to launch in Vista,even though I have made sure ff is not running in the background,and I have accurately typed in firefox.exe -profilemanager.When I do this,nothing appears on the desktop,and I find that ff is in the list of running processes,although it doesn't actually launch.

If you watch my recent video, HD, you'll see that it is not -profilemanager but --profilemanager.

I was using a piece of software called Virtual Box. The operating system was Ubuntu.
