I never heard that story, but Steve and John Prine wrote it to make fun of country music, as a joke. Prine didn't even want his name on as cowriter, because it was just a joke. Then, lo and behold, it became a country hit. Go figure.

people here now, sometimes when i ask them if they know steve goodman, they'll say "no".

it kinda breaks my heart, even though im just 17 and i'll never see him live. but when i go to Oldtown of both branches, they knew steve too well, that i'd listen to them talk about it.

its just a shame for me that i'll never see the one who inspired me to be a musician
