No one is probably listening to this any more, but if you ever get a chance to hear Steve sing his song "I Can't Sleep", you will understand what his early death meant to music. I love him.
I never heard that story, but Steve and John Prine wrote it to make fun of country music, as a joke. Prine didn't even want his name on as cowriter, because it was just a joke. Then, lo and behold, it became a country hit. Go figure.
Thank you, thank you so much for posting this slightly different version of the song (I've never heard "ever since the dog got drunk and died"...before.) Peace to you and dear Steve, wherever he is. Ultimate bravery was something that he epitomised, in my opinion. Thank you, so very much. Best wishes.
I live down St. Louis way, and he's still a folk legend here. He was an awesome talent and a genuinely funny man. American Folk music isn't the same without him.
People in Chicago are forgetting the name Steve Goodman??? Not hardly. Not in the folk community, and not among Cub fans who sing the song after every home win. Not among anyone who ever sets foot in the Old Town School, or goes to hear a local folksinger, who will probably do a Goodman song or two.
people here now, sometimes when i ask them if they know steve goodman, they'll say "no".
it kinda breaks my heart, even though im just 17 and i'll never see him live. but when i go to Oldtown of both branches, they knew steve too well, that i'd listen to them talk about it.
its just a shame for me that i'll never see the one who inspired me to be a musician
Steve Goodman is known over here in Denmark. Great artist.

Coe wrecked the feel of the song. He's too afraid to have fun with it. Steve OWNS this song. We lost an amazing treasure.

The last laugh is yours, Steve.
It's a karaoke hit in every redneck truck stop and two-bit honky-tonk from Saskatoon to Tallahassee!
You actually did craft a song that touched the heart of Country Western fans everywhere...eternally!
ROFLMMFAO!

Didn't he write this song because the radio stations kept getting his name wrong?
