love the chicken neck dance at 2:37...sent by a mate...what a memory!!! Fantastic memories of the best thing out of Scootland...well, one of the best...in my humble opinion! Love you BC!!!
This was the 1st BC song I ever heard (before 'In a Big' or 'Fields' or 'Chance'). I was 16, living in Toronto and was thunderstruck. This was an anthem of misery, of departure, of sorrow, yet with a remarkable sense of urgency of action and hope. I realized at that moment, after hearing this one song, that BC would be my saviour, a band that would endure my soul, a band that would challenge my mind and give me comfort in times of need. I was right.
good point i'm 29 and saw big country live in shepton mallet when i was 7 i listen to them nearly every day and i'm probably the worlds harshest music critic, BC are the best thing i've ever heard i think even mick jagger said they were the best support act they ever had. They were before their time i'm patiently waiting for a new band to come along and recreate that sound, with the band scene as it is today BC would rule even now. shite management i agree,
I agree with you. I remember in the summer of '88, I bumped into Tony Butler at a Santa Monica(LA) pub and I asked him how the next album will be. He said "as big as u2". They should have been bigger in the States and Warner Brothers didn't help them. So Sad....
How BC never blew U2..Simple Minds...of the map i,ll never know..The Management team and PR should hang their heads in shame...Some limp Band will cover Porrohman or the crossing and the Legacy with begin..
I agree, esp about the PR, they must have had the worst PR in the business!! I think that image they were given at the time of In a Big Country was totally wrong and inappropriate, I think they suffered throughout their careers because of it, not taken seriously after that at all.
Ironically , their look is very early 90s grunge. The Flannel shirts, short pants. They were way ahead , but keep in mind New Wave fashion hadn't quite peaked mainstream yet , so it was too soon to expect the masses to accept something so utterly different. Too bad having the right image fashionwise outweighs obvious talent in the mind of the masses. Things are worse nowadays. How else could Britney Spears & Justin Timberlake & Jones Bros be multimillionaires???
Nice to see a lot nice comments. Been a lifelong fan and still am, I stay 20mins from where the boys are from in Fife. Met Stuart and Bruce on a few occassions and they're as nice as they come. Down to earth, super talented and from the heart. Miss all the boys, live on Big Country! Rest in Peace Stuart!!! Hen (Kirkcaldy)
Adamson, as all the BC material on YT bears out, was a giant of a talent and a Man. Compare to Bono, the prissing, preening counter of millions, and the Edge, the equally rich guitarist who counted Stuart as a major influence! It's not too late to give BC their due!
Shame no one could have saved Stuart in his hour of darkness...' The mind has mountains, cliffs of fall, sheer frightful, hold them cheap who ne'er hung there'. A Truly innovative band and were the masters of the 'celtic sound' on guitar originally started by Thin Lizzy and Horselips. Way better than 'the alarm' or 'simple minds' and as earthy raw as early U2 . Still Listen to 'Angle Park', 'thousand stars' almost every week.
If this was today, and they'd released Steeltown 2008, they would have become one of the most recordselling bands in the world, Im convinced. Great song, rip Stu!
This song was one of the first that fired my love of Big Country. It is awesome, and still sounds brilliant! The innovative lyrics and melody are inspirational!
yeah...he played on the last ULTRAVOX album(1986)and did a fine job on MIDGE URE's PURE album.if you love big country like i do you will probably enjoy this album as well.
THANK YOU! Oh, so so under-rated. Why didn't they hit as big as U2? Their chops were equally good. (& the vocals were better). Stooopid stoopid Americans and their lousy taste in the early 80s. Grr.
Sheeesh, the people in the audience are asleep. What's wrong with them? Did they come straight over from a James Taylor performance? How can you not get up and move to this. Oh well, I'm glad it didn't affect the boys' performance, they still rocked.
I was thinking the same thing. They must have been tranquilized as they are just sitting there doing absolutely nothing. This is one of my favorite videos here. Stuart was an absolute treasure---I think of him every day.
Wow ~ My brother just shared this with me and what a great flashback for me. We saw them live in Chicago and it's a shame that Stuart is gone. Thanks for posting this!
THANKS SO MUCH for posting this. This might be their best live TV moment. How about the other one they performed on this show, "Carry You Home" , not the real title but that is the chorus ...help me out here.
Actually , since I posted this, I found out that the performance I'm trying to find is titled "Close Action". I saw a live performance on a TV show called Rockline back in the mid 80s. Hoping someone might have it & upload it.
