I know people who work on film sets and apparently Ralph has a rep of being a bit of a prick to crew and stuff during films, don't believe that for a second!
he asks the questions everyone wants to know about, but few actually have the balls to do it. He's not a dick, he's just doing his job, for all that people don't want to see the interviewee upset they'd just be lying if they said they don't want to find out the answers to the questions Lipton asks
the little shakespeare speach = woow! even scoucers (i am one) cant speak tha fast! how does he rememeber all of it! I FACNY HIM THAT MUCH MORE NOW! :D
James Lipton- "We arrive very quickly tonight....* Short Dramatic Pause followed by the "I know you've been waiting for it" smile... at Schindler's List."
I really don't understand why everyone is saying James frigging Lipton is a bully for asking Ralph Fiennes what his mother thought of Schindler's List. It's not an outrageous question - it made sense within the interview.
@captaintink3515 I agree with you. There was nothing insensitive about Lipton's probing. In fact, to me, it seemed very sensitively conducted and added great depth to the interview.
The whole point of this show is that nothing is off limits- James Lipton is one of the best interviewers in the world because he's so up-front and doesnt try to worm his way into sensitive subjects. I'm glad he does that- as an aspiring young actor his show is most inspiring to me.
OK, everybody, just chill please. Every guest who accepts to participate here knows this is not going to be one of those idiotic interviews you do on the red carpet on your way to the Oscars. Lipton did nothing he hadn't done many times before. You can never tell what reaction you're gonna get, that's the whole point. Fiennes wasn't going to dwell on it and Lipton did not insist. It's the stuff good conversations are made of. Nothing to do with envy and nothing sensationalistic about it.
Does it seem to anyone else that Lipton ambushes his guests by trying to force them to talk about deeply painful memories? Does he do it because he envies their success?
I get sick of hearing the "oh, it's jealousy" rationalization. It's lazy and off base. What Lipton is doing is attempting to illicit an emotional respone from those he's interviewing. He's trying to get a view into their personal identity (since, you know the entire point of acting is portraying something that isn't you). Now, I'm not saying it's right or wrong, however it's a common technique by interviewers.
@opmike343 It is neither lazy or offbase. Everyone know he's trying to elicit an emotional response. It's obvious, and its also a nasty tactic to bring up those things that Lipton has nothing to do with. There are 52 thumbs up for the comment above saying Lipton can be a bully. He's been around actors for decades and he pulls that crap. It's lame and uncalled for. I'm sure he'd rather be a millionaire acting in large movies than be Dean of an acting school.
@Snackay But he's not so much an actor as a scholar (look up his past), and I think he just enjoys eliciting a characterization from the actor he's interviewing. no one does interviews as in-depth as lipton does, and he's always trying to dig deeper into them. Sometimes he goes overboard (like now) but mostly he's a terrific interviewer and film historian.
Watch the behind the scenes of GoF about how he played Voldy. He carried that acting technique he spoke about here, 1:36-2:12 to his HP role and it was commented on by those who worked w/ him. He had the ability to actually teach those actors who played his Death Eaters during the graveyard scene and they took his style w/ them afterwards. Complete brilliance!
He is one of the few who seems to have "gotten" Hamlet. The man is young, hungry, impatient and not at all a quiet ponderer. The delivery ought to be fast and energetic, closer to Jim Carrey than John Gielgud.
I agree completely. It's why I, for the most part, love Branagh's Hamlet. Although I think he too got caught up in the braininess of the 'to be' speech.
@alejandra379 I think it's because they're both born the year of the tiger and they know they're the strongest so when they see another one they naturally become defensive! James Lipton personality-wise is actually hot when you think @ it. And Fiennes, don't get me started...
I read somewhere that you could go to a museum (forgot the name) and make a request to watch a certain Broadway (US) or Westend(London)play.Either one isn't possible for me coz I live on the other side of the world.
Most powerful movie that I've ever seen, lots of great acting and Mr. Fiennes was particularly brilliant, I highly recommend it to anyone who has not yet seen it.
It wasn't easy for him to talk about his mother, just want to give him a hug! But, he's really brilliant in everything he does and cute, too! When was this originally aired,BTW?

Yes. But for someone without the (imo- haha) luxury of a sexy English accent, his voice is quite nice. I like how he is very slow, quiet, measured, and gravely. My 1st time watching him was for yesterday - Daniel Radcliffe's appearance, and now I'm here (after a mention of him being on it too during DRs!)
