  • Nothing short of incredible. Amazing work. Thank you for sharing.

  • im currently remaking elite frontier,,,if its okay im gonna use this as the intro

  • humans will actually be flying around in space and visiting others stars by the time elite 4 is released. it will be released under the category of "flight simulator"

  • I love this video so much! Its an almost perfect recreation of the original video.

Now if only we could actually have a full game like this... *_*

  • try vendetta online, thats the closest I have seen to Elite II.

  • video is awesome but music sucks real bad but great effort

  • The soundtrack definetely needs work.

  • Excellent Video. Brings back a lot of memories. Good job.

  • that is one hell of a master piece

  • I noticed you hoping for frontier elite 2. have you guys ever heard of eve online? its an mmo and is the closest thing you will get to frontier.

if you are interested i can send you an email allowing you to have a 21 day free trial. Its not completely unselfish of me. if you subscribe to the game i get 30 days free :p

  • Great work, good to see you updated it but also kept in keeping with the original stylings on the planet surface.

Just started replaying this on my Amiga CD32 !

  • loved it! brought back happy memories of the Amiga days :)

    thx for the share

  • Wow! That's amazing! I can't believe how much of the smaller and minor details you included from the original. This must've taken alot of studying of the original to make! Nice work!

  • Amazing video. Thanks for made it alive :)

  • Yes very good !

  • elite, wow, forever....

  • Excelent Video!

Your attention to detail is amazing!

I stil play a Direct3D version of first enc.

Elite 4 is likely vaporware, but we can live in hope.

  • @TerrorTrooperM, thanks, glad you enjoyed it. Also, yes we can. Desperate sad pathetic hope. At this rate we'll have hyperdrives and luxury goods delivered by the tonne before we have Elite 4.

  • @TerrorTrooperM hopefully infinity is not vaporware D:

  • F:E2 definitely had the largest play area of any game in history, not to mention planet surfaces all to scale size. Criminal that better versions of this game haven't ever come out over the years. :(

  • Excellent, great work!

  • Great video, respect for hardwork.

But major mistake is dreamy, soft music which replaced battle theme from original.

  • impressive :) i especially liked the Courier's kills of the Eagles. Very detailed ^^

  • @MetallSwede, thanks glad you liked it.

I'm (slowly) working on more elite universe animation that I hope will be much better. The video response that shows the much more detailed model of the Eagle Fighter will be part of it.

  • The animation is excelent but you could do better music with FLStudio:)

  • @Azazel84, thanks, and I agree, the music is complete pants.

  • @theinquisitor For what it's worth, I like the music you included on this video.

  • I so wish someone could remake this game period. : (

  • @MorteWulfe They are, infinity: the quest for earth

  • @Shadawa, hadn't heard of that game before. Looks interesting, a couple of significant differences are the combat system and the fact that it's an MMO, but other than that, shares much with Elite.

I'm dubious about the MMO aspect, but time will tell if it manages to capture the essence of what made Elite great. But it's got that same incomparability as games like X-COM that have been often imitated and never matched.

  • After about 8 minutes of reading about it, I'm already squealing like a little girl in anticipation of this game. A procedurally generated galaxy with realistic scale and Newtonian physics. Fuck. Could it be? Elite 4 in all but name?

  • @theinquisitor

No they say this is going to be a online-only mmo...which sucks

  • @theinquisitor

Don't count on it. I am a member on their forum and they are going to focus more on the PvP aspect than the story. Game-changing missions are going to be accessible ONLY to a select few players, and once a particular core-mission is done, it will never be available to other players again. Sure, if you like that kind of thing, but i am more an Elite-fanboy, where you are always a part of the story and don't miss out on anything, unless you choose to.

  • Thanks for the tip man. Something to keep on the radar!

  • That's some good work, this is a great video!

  • impressive

  • WOW!!!!

  • ive could done music much better from MIDI -file. But the graphics were good and followed the oiriginal version very truthfully :)

  • Thanks. I'm really not happy with the music either. I actually don't have the source video any more due to hard drive failure so I can't reupload it in any decent quality.

I was working on remaking it with some better 3d models and textures, but got discouraged and sidetracked. I will probably finish it eventually though, and maybe make some other elite animations. I think I'll be using the amiga version's music when I remake the intro. It'll be in high definition then too.

  • Scratch that. If the remixers of the music that DevilMaster mentioned in the post below are willing, I'd love to use the remixed version they've made.

  • To make it feel more epic, I would've chosen a different remix of the Frontier theme. Google "AmiGamer - Elite 2 Frontier Motion Picture Remix" and you'll find it.

  • Holy crap I just checked that out and it's bloody awesome. If they let me, I'd love to use that in the remastered remake that I'm suddenly feeling like working on again. Thanks for pointing it out.

  • remember wasting a lot of time smoking bongs and playin this.

    highly repetitive mind

  • I remember this game so well, i presume it that Eve online is the closes current game to this

  • check out "infinity quest for earth"

  • Excellent job on this I remember every moment of this intro from that fabulously visionary game. I would agree with other comments that it would be nice to see a reworking of the music as well as the visuals, perhaps there is a musician out there that would like a go at it.

  • i played this to death, made a load of money and was flying around in a Cobra MKIII which rocked !!!! this footage is amazing, well done for recreating 1 of the best openings known to man in the gaming universe

  • where did the jagged lines, clunky polygons, gradient free textures and simple shadowing effects go?

  • there... there too many colours! My eyes D:

  • They went down the drain! Isn't this wonderful?

  • very good!

  • I'm very impressed with this, you've managed to recreate it perfectly and it looks great. The only criticism I'd make is the music but it's clearly not your fault as it's to do with the MIDI. Well done!

  • Trade Computers for Fish at Barnard's Star you cant go wrong........or was it Barnard's at Fish World......You Must Play This Before You Die....

  • I want to play this game it hurts

  • I played this Sim in the 90's. Its the greatest Sim ever. Please were, when and how do you get it to work on Vista without......DOS/infinate.DOS.repeat

  • There's an OpenGL port of Elite 2 that might work. Google: glfrontier to find it. You could also try a windows compatible version of Elite 3, which can be found by googling: JJFFE.

  • The other option is use an emulator, ST or Amiga... Steem works on Vista... as it works on my laptop with has Vista... My partner plays it when she gets the chance...

  • BEST GAME EVER

  • looks great! really well done on the graphics,

although I am also not too fond of the music

  • Makes me wish there was a high-res version of the game to play!

  • Wow. Nice.

Can you do the First Encounters intro like this as well? Including the Turner's Quest and its wiggly tail?

  • Thanks. I'm also not happy with the music. I'm planning to do a remake and use the music from the amiga version, also with some better models and I'll upload in youtube's new HD format.

  • I was planning on making a remix of the original theme lol

  • Elite will rise again.

The problem is that the majority of the computer users aren't interested in that kind of decent games. They want to play the x-th version of Sims ...

  • Maybe the best we can hope for is a hybrid. The Sims: Space Pirate.

But it's not like there haven't been attempts to recapture the Elite genre, with games like Freelancer and X. They just don't do it right.

Some games just seem almost unduplicatable without watering down what makes them good, like with the many X-COM clones.

  • nothing made me more happier than shooting a panther one day in an eag;le gees, theres to much in that amigo version though a wee bit dicey the turret view in a ship while my autopilot was on lol nomore pirates yet i was missing alot diamond moments in that game even lay minds in plantets wernt very profitable but the master of the sling shot one night never mind scooping fuel .was a game to advanced how do heck that get on a little disk nice one

  • The Video was nice.. but the music had none of the spirit like the first.. the soundtrack should be much more, heavy

  • YES... think some progressive power metal like Lost Horizon or Therion or Anubis Gate.

  • Excellent work!!!! I still have my old Amiga here, and for one purpose - playing Elite II :-))

  • Found a direct x port of frontier elite 2

  • HOLY SHIT LINK PLZ

  • Sorry for beeing sceptical. I found this OpenGL port of Elite II. Google: glfrontier

It works! So you get hardware accelerated 3dgraphics. The GUI looks the same. Very very cool!

  • That's astonishingly awesome. I just tried it out and while the graphics are a little glichy, it's still extremely impressive. Thanks for finding that!

  • Oh, GLF. It's cool, I guess, but missing atmospheres and circular effects turning into plus-signs made me dislike it...

  • I am sceptical...

  • Will we ever see such a break through game again in the space sim genre? I have my doubts but ones things for sure, I sure do miss the time I spent exploring the elite series.

It must of taken you a lot of effort to make this, thanks for the video, great work

  • That is nicely made.

  • Excellent work. This game was so awesome. So many adventures, got warped hundreds of light years away in a Puma, fought my way back to civilisation. :D

  • i always hated these elite games

  • Then why the hell are you search for this kind of videos?......

If i dont like gay videos,i not search for.....

  • Excellent, I like the touch of cutting the first enemy in half.

  • Wow awesome work on the graphics, wish it really was a game! :)

I remember being totally blown away by this game on my amiga.

1 comment though, personally i would've dubbed the original amiga soundtrack on top instead of this midi remake, you must admit it lacks the power of the original.

Still, ***** for what must have been alot of work!

  • I have to agree about the music. I'm currently working on a re-rendering of the animation to use youtube's new high quality format (and correcting a few shots I didn't like). I think I'll be using the amiga soundtrack with that version.

Also, thanks for your comment, glad you liked it.

  • oh the memorys of that game *sigh*

  • Absolutly fuck'n great work!!!!!

Frontier was my first game on a pc in my early childhood. And over 14 years later now, i still play us'n the DosBox ;)

    Frontier 4 ever :)

  • Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.

For me it was the Amiga. Countless hours spend absorbed into another universe. It still has the power to create a sense of awe in me.

There's a remade version of Elite 3: First Encounters (much the same game), which has been recompiled to work on windows without dosbox. If you google JJFFE, the first result takes you to the site where you can download it. I think the sound is also improved. As far as I know there's no similar version of Elite 2.

    Frontier 4 all!

  • Hey fantastic. Great vid. I like the city especially. When playing Frontier I used to wish that I could land on the planets and then get out and walk about like in an RPG and do stuff. Dam, in all these years there has still never been a game like that! Still, got to agree with an earlier poster about the music. Sounds like Reginald something or other on his Wurlutzer Organ that my dad used to listen to, lol. Anyway, thanks for the memory.

  • doesnt it just! can remember that sodding great wall chart on my wall....

  • The star chart? I still have it! :D

  • My god that brings back memories :D

  • A little more dynamic music and it would just fucking great! Frontier rulezzzzzzzzzzz!

  • jameson you rember that day we ,had special missiles, but the other moment, arriving late thought i was going collide into to planet lol, a contract, thought i had fluffed , i did, was hitting wrong buttons wasnt a turret view we was getting in the eagle, one panther is going down lol, amazing game.

  • I prostrate my self at the feet of greatness

    :0

  • if only the whole game was made over with these graphics

  • WHAAA

    Great Work..

when is thig game out LOL :) hehe

  • this is an excellent remake(once again). the best game ever!!

  • Great work!!!

  • Excellent Work!

  • Very nice work. Although the other remake had a bit more precisely synched music and actually had Olmypus Mons at the Landin Site (but the craft landed on Earth instead of Mars :p), your work is graphicaly more detailed.

    Great job. :-)

  • Thanks, I appreciate your comments. I didn't realise the planet in the intro was the terraformed Mars. What is the Olmypus Mons, is that one of the buildings?

  • Oh wait, my bad. It wasn't Mars that the ship in the original intro landed on. I don't know where exactly, but the terraformed Mars didn't have this many water.

BTW: Olympus Mons is the tallest vulcano in the solar system and was used as a ground station in the game. I got the two places mixed up becasue the place in the intro has the same mountain terrain-prop that was also used for the mountain on Mars at Olympus Village.

  • Awesome. Awesome to the max.

  • its 2x too slow

  • Actually it's at 80% of the original speed. I was thinking of uploading a version that's the same speed as the original, with the original music.

  • Fantasic job, I wonder if David Braben has seen it!

  • Would be great to hear this theme performed by a symphony orchestra..

  • i love this game, haven't played it in years. its the best game ever.

  • better than the other remake intro. that wasnt as detailed and missed something in urgency that the original had

  • Thanks, I was trying to get it as close as I could to the original shots. One of the response videos shows a comparison to the original.

  • Elite II was my favourite game for a looooong time. Nice remake.

  • I still have my Amiga and Frontier oh how sad.

  • I do too, but it's packed away in a drawer. I'll probably get it out when I'm feeling nostalgic.

  • Nice animation, would be cool if Elite 2 was remade in this tone, music ain't that bad either.

  • Comment removed

  • this is an excellent remake. frontier elite 2 is my favorite game of all time

  • Thanks, glad you liked it. Elite 2 is also a very special game for me. I'm probably going to make another elite universe animation sometime, maybe with the Thargoids.

  • This is quite nice but the music sucks. Also, with a better frame rate, there could have been some scenes made shorter and faster. :-)

  • Thanks, I think I'll ask the maker of the other video if they mind me using that music, and I'll need to speed it up a bit to get it to the same tempo.

  • Your remake is grea, and closer to the original intro than coolammo's. what collammo did great was the ring model (although it was not so close to the one in the original intro, as is yours)

  • Thanks very much. I suspect that the artist of the other intro used a number of downloaded meshes, which might explain the different levels of detail in various objects. Not that there's anything wrong with that, some like to specialise in animation, but I wanted to make something where I'd made everything. I do prefer his trails for the courier's engines though.

  • wow this brings back some good memories. I preferred the amiga mod soundtrack rather than the PC midi one though

  • nice remake u have. I've been using 3DS for multiple computer graphics projects, and i was wondering how u created the clouds effect (as in which tool) in the atmosphere?

  • TianyieSeiWoi, sorry I didn't reply, I was meaning to and then I had the idea to make a little tutorial about it. Then I got distracted and forgot. In short I created a large cylindrical atmospheric apparatus and did a lot of tweaking with the parameters. I'll do a video tutorial about it, but right now I'm working on RabidApe's Big Bang project. Maybe in a few weeks.

  • Thanks, glad you liked it. I used 3D Studio Max for the 3D models and animation, Photoshop for the textures, VirtualDub and Adobe Premiere for the editing. I tried to match up the scenes as closely as I could. One of the response videos is a comparison of the new animation to the old, showing how closely I got it. I've been working on a remodelling of the Imperial Courier, and I might make some original Elite style animations, maybe with the Thargoids.

  • Great!

  • There's only one illogical flaw to this game's intro. It shows the Imperial Courier ship jumping, and then exiting the Space jump, and then the Eagles following shortly after. But playing the game, it should be the other way round, because the Eagles had much faster engines, thus being capable of Space jumping with much less time expense. So they should have arrived first. Anyway, it's a fantastic remake, very refreshing to see. Thanks. I love this game still! I wish it would be remade!

  • Thanks and good point. I think that the designer of the intro might not have been aware of the specifics of the mechanics of the game. There were a few errors with the positions of the ships too. But considering that this game was built in assembler code, it's a beautiful game. Elite 4 has been delayed longer than the second coming of the flying spaghetti monster, but it'll come sooner or later I think.

  • i prefer your remake than the other guy's remake (i dont know his name) because you capture the essence of the intro, the red lights flashing warning about an attack, the counter attack on the other side of that ship after the jumphole, perfect the only thing i would change is that horrible music, please put back the original music with the original chiptune! it's way better :)

  • Thanks, I could upload it with different music. I was thinking about asking the owner of the original video if I can use his music since it's much better. The only other versions of the music I have is a horrible midi file (which I played with to make the music), and a recording of the amiga music. The amiga one might be nice for nostalgia, but I actually slowed the animation down to 80% of original speed, as well as the music. So I'd have to speed it up again using different music.

  • that would be better!

  • Very nice! Now if only someone would remake the game itself and make it not suck...

  • Very nice, thanks.

  • Oh yeah and those trails are really good. I'm not really happy with my explosions actually and I was thinking of remaking it with the new model for the courier, but I decided to just declare it finished and upload it. Art is never finished, only abandoned. I learned a lot from it and the next animation will be better. Maybe with the Thargoids.

  • I'm not sure but I think the models might not be created by the animator. I recall seeing the eagle models before in a public forum and I think the courier too. So if those are publicly available models, I could remake mine by substituting the meshes. However I wanted to make something in which I'd made everything.

  • nice

  • That brought back memories! The shadow/graphic enhancements are excellent. I think the melody needs to stand out a little more...being so soft lessens the excitement.

  • Thanks. Unfortunately making music is not something I have much experience with. I made this out of the midi file from the game, replacing each midi sound with an instrument in FL studio. There's a really good remake of the music in another remake of this intro, which is also very good. I might ask the user who made it if I can use that music for this animation.
