  • @CapHusky When Winnie the Pooh yells, "one at a time!"... you best go one at a time.

  • to this day when this movie is on I still laugh my ass off.....

  • I love this movie I lauphed my can off!!!!!!! I love that it has all the great stars in it!

  • the best movie around.

  • this comedy film is timeless. Me and my family can't stop laughing every time it comes on. It would be a real treat if there will be revival of the movie, a 21st century version with all star cast of today.

  • It's the Ben Hur of comedy

  • This movie got all the best actors in the whole world.

    I love it.

Could you please put the last minutes, at the hospital?

  • GET ON ALPHABETICAL! I'M BENJI!!!!!!

    Wow. This is gold.

  • I love this movie even though Im only 15 lol

  • This has always been my favorite part of the movie!

I only saw the film when I was a little kid (I'm long overdue for another viewing), but I'll never forget this legendary scene!

  • ive just got one question: why didnt any of the men consider going DOWN the ladder when they got there? i mean, its not that there was anything blocking them, its more like they decided to be up there with the rest.

in any case: thats funny and the only word to fully describe it is: ouch

  • LOL @ 5:40

  • LOL @ 5:40

  • great movie back in those days you did not need to curse to make people laugh!

  • unbelievable, just unbelievable *******

  • LOLOLOLOLOLOL! This is the best part!

  • One of the greatest films ever made. Great cast!! Great acting and stunts!!FIVE STARS!!

  • this film is hilarious so many big stars did you know stan laurel was offered a cameo roll but turn it down due to his health problems . Brilliant film

  • TODO UN CLASICO JAJAJAJAJ

  • table fall priceless

  • yep! thats right .. all the good things on it. But the fall in the open container or into the pet shop ~ hilarious too, just classic

  • The funniest movie ever. You did not have to be vulgar in those days to make people laugh.

  • 1:56 - Nice classic Seagrave K-cab ladder. Notice you NEVER see the truck itself when the people are swinging around on the ladder, though they did a nice recreation of the turntable area including the Seagrave emblem on the controls.

  • Most of them don't apear to be that badly injured.

  • @bushbasher42 Especially the ones who were on the power lines. :)

  • This is the best movie with the best cast ever. SO many cameo appearances!

  • Yes, I agree. I can't think of a comedy like that, man.

  • Mar Kjartansson This is a Fantastic old movie Laughing all the way through,,,,,Brings ,,,Memories

  • lmao get on alphabetical - I'M BENJI

best ending to a film ever. period.

  • @Aztecius i agree its even better than the shit you see nowadays. This film is a gem

  • My first real date (I was 17) was at the Palace Theatre in Columbus, Ohio for the world premier of this film. Jammed shoulder to shoulder in the foyer I felt a pick-pocket steal my wallet with all of my money. Its a good thing the movie was roaring funny. It only cost me about $14 for tickets, $3 for parking and $85 in my wallet, $20 for a new license and $5 for a new wallet. $127 for one kiss and a movie.

  • Bill Murray is a better choice than Jon Lovitz, but this is such a good idea I wish I knew some one in the movie industry to put this to work, with the right cast and by updating this classic, this could be a hit.

  • To go a little further, since we have I think the principal roles cast, how about Jim Carrey in the Jerrry Lewis cameo, Martin Short in the Don Knotts role and Jonathan Winters in the Jimmy Durante role as an homage?

  • That's very, very good casting,I'm trying to find a role for Bill Cosby, him being a veteran comic. There are two smaller parts that were played by two of my favorites I'm having trouble casting, the other air traffic controller played by Jessie White and the Chief, William Demarest, any suggestions?

  • You may balk at my two choices, but truthfully I can't think of anyone else: Dennis Franz in the William Demarest role and Brad Garrett in the Jesse White role. As for Bill Cosby, maybe a cameo like Buster Keaton?

  • Brad Garrett? good choice, The Coz in a cameo, great, but what do you think of Abe Vigoda in the William Demarest role?I recently saw him on the Today show, he's older but still looks good for his age, he said people thought he had died, got a good laugh from Matt Lauer.

  • If the man could provide enough fire to deliver the role, maybe. He, to me, just doesn't look like the yeller or tough negotiator Demarest was. He just looks really tired to me

  • Yeah, Abe Vigoda may not be the best choice but I can really see him on the phone negotiating for his friends full pension,Dennis Franz? I don't know, thinking in a comedic kind of way I'd take Vigoda over Franz.

  • Well, then how about John Mahoney, the guy who palyed Martin Crane on "Frasier"?

  • As the Police Chief? He's a good comedic actor, I think he would pull it off, now what about the minor role of the Fireman, I think in the original he was the guy who did the voice for Winnie the pooh, I forget his name.

  • The original guy was Sterling Holloway. Kiddingly, I would say Joe Piscapo since he's built like one of those firefighters on those calendars.

    How about Denis Leary?

  • Yeah, I could see Mr. Leary telling those guys one at a time down the ladder and getting ticked in the confusion.

  • Maybe stick in Ray Romano for Joe E. Brown?

  • I like Ray Romano. I know his part was very small, to small I think, but remember Buster Keaton guiding Spencer Tracy into the garage, who could play that role it's awfully small.

  • I don't know abou tthe Buster Keaton role. Maybe Sid Caesar as another homage?

I forgot about the bi-plane pilot and wife who flies the Crumps. Maybe Jeff Foxworthy and Reba McIntyre?

  • Good choices, but let me add Larry the cable guy.

  • Do you mean to substitue Larry for Jeff?

Regardless, the hardware store owner who locks in the Crumps, who we decided would be Tim Allen and Jennifer Aniston, could ironically be Richard Karn.

  • Yeah, I was thinking Larry as the pilot instead of Jeff foxworthy, although he would be good in that role also. Richard Karn? I can't picture who he is??

  • He played Al, Tim's assistant on "Home Improvement"

  • Oh, the chubby guy with the beard? I haven't seen much of his work.

  • After "Home Improvement", he hosted "Family Feud" for awhile. Anyhow, unless I'm overlooking some parts, I think that concludes our re-casting of this pic.

  • JOHNSTAGS, it's been great working with you, now maybe some one with ties to the movie industry will see our idea and run with it, I'd love to this movie remade for today's audience.

  • sorry to bring this up a again JOHNSTAGS, but there is one actor that's a must for any remake who I had completely forgotten, that's Chris Elliot.

  • @JOHNSTAGS

I think Foxworthy would be better as the sherriff played by Andy Devine

  • @JOHNSTAGS

Robin Williams cameo as the fireman on the ladder. As the 5-second cameo rescue response team at the airport instead of the Three Stooges, Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith.

  • @CapHusky Good calls!

  • @JOHNSTAGS

I think Tim Conway would be great in the Buster Keaton spot. Conway can make walking into a room funny.

  • Since there was only one token Black(played by Jack Benny's "Rochester") Cosby would be good as the cab driver.

  • Hey Einstein, when you remake a movie you set it to today, now, the 21st century.

  • The United States was a safer, richer, better country back then even if we didn't have the technology we do today. I'd rather have been my age back then.

  • @greenmean1 i suggest Cosby in the place of Jack Benny with the slow-burn doubletake.

Burt Reynolds as Aloysius. I also see Harrison Ford as Culpepper. Not only has Ford got great comedic timing, but he's the closest actor we have as our generation's Spenser Tracey.

  • Will Ferrell for sure, I"m ashamed to say i almost forgot about him. What do you think about Dan Ackroyd as Col. Wilberforce, and what about the Jim Backus role?

  • DEFINTIELY Dan Aykroyd as the Col. Wilberforce roel. I could see Keenan Ivory Wayans as the control tower Carl Reiner role. Jim Backus,,,that's tough. Maybe Kelsey Grammer?

I'm still stcuk on who would play the Phil Silvers conman role.

  • Man that is a hard one, while I'm thinking, I'll put Jon Lovitz name up but I think there maybe a better choice?? and Kelsey Grammer sounds good in the Jim Backus role.

  • Your Keenan Ivory Wayans choice is also a very good one, What do you think of Carlos Mencia as one of the cabbies, and George Lopez as one of the squad room detective's?

  • I'll buy those guys. I think for the Phil Silvers role, the best choice could be Bill Murray. I could see him conning his way in there like in "Kingpin".

A little re-casting, though. Put Christine Taylor as the girlfriend of the Ben Stiller (Dick Shawn) role and Anne Hathaway in the Dorothy Provine (Mrs. Finch role)

  • Bill Murray - Milton Berle

    Jamie Foxx- Jonathan Winters

  • I may disagree with you about Bill Murray, because he wouldn't stand for being henpecked. What about Steve Martin?

  • Or Billy Crystal?

  • I think Billy Crystal would be a really good choice (although, since Sid Caesar inspired him to be a comic, he ouwld lobby hard for the Melville Crump role). That said, Chrisitne Taylor could be his hot young wife, with Roseanne Barr as the mother-in-law

  • Roseanne Barr in the Ethel Merman role, GREAT, GREAT choice that role is taylor made for Roseanne. And my choice of Jamie Foxx as the truck driver, people forget the he was a very good comic before he had all the movie roles and he did great impersonations

  • I would agree with you on Jamie Foxx. I could see him going bananas in that gas station. The Buddy Hackett/ Mickey Rooney roles might conceivably go to Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd or Steve Carrell

  • @JOHNSTAGS

As the Finch and the Marcus family I see Ray Romano as the hen-pecked husband, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as the hypochodriac wife, and Sally Field as the loud-mouth mother. I don't like Barr because of the age range.

And Jeremy Irons as Lt. Col. Hawthorne. Just imagine that wikkid voice talking about cacti and flirting with Emmeline... or the Emasculation of American men rant (and Romano's reactions to the rant, at that)!

  • @greenmean1

I like Jamie Foxx and all... but you really need a big, beefy guy for Pike the furniture mover.

    John Goodman.

  • Now this classic should be redone for today's audience although it would not be as good but compared to some of the other films that have been remade this gets my nod.

  • You can't remake a classic no matter how hard you try. It would be fun though, to think of who would play those parts today. I'd be curious to see who'd they'd put in the Sid Caesar/ Edie Adams roles as the Crumps

  • Tim Allen and Jenifer Aniston as the crumps.

  • That's actually excellent casting. I could see Robert DeNiro doing the Spencer Tracy role. I could also see Ben Stiller doing the Dick Shawn role. Who would you see in the Milton Berle and Jonathan Winters roles?

  • And Sasha Baron Cohen as the English guy that Terry Thomas played so well.

  • Dan Ackroyd- Col. Wilberforce

  • Dana Carvey and Rob Snider- The Garage guys, This is becoming interesting

  • How about Bruce Willis in the Peter Falk role?

  • Bruce Willis? Great Choice.

  • Thank you

  • I don't get why they would bother looping that dog licking Culpepper's face o.O

  • Classic film!

  • Sterling Holloway was Pooh, and Kaa the snake in the Jungle Book.

So many great cameos. Jerry Lewis, Stooges, Joe E. Brown

  • Don't forget Don Knotts

  • In a longer version, whihc was consiedered lost footage, Jack Benny even makes an appearance

  • It's A Mad,Mad,Mad,Mad World, premired on November 22, 1963. The day Kennedy was shot. Ironic for one of the best comedies ever made released on such a horrific day.

  • holy crap, that's freaky!.........and this film was STILL such a huge box office hit!

  • why did that black cab driver go in hospital when all he did was bounce off a trampoline

and land on the statue in a safe way

  • i don't know.........maybe you should try it and see if YOU end up in a hospital

  • do you hate me or are u joking

  • what do you think?!....i'm just foolin'...:)

  • You and Psfreakman300 are as funny as the movie! Keep going!

  • haha, it's only if he decides to respond...:)

  • I just read an article that stated it was released on November 7, 1963 and it suffered at the box office in part by JFK's assassination and because it was original 192 minutes long.

  • Don Knotts was even in it too, playing some average joe who got taken advantage of by this whole ordeal, chewed up, and spit out by the game that these aggressive players were involved in without ever really understanding what happened. I'd enjoy it if that scene were put up.

  • One of the funniest movies ever made! I love it!!

  • it may have been a mad world but it was still pretty good

  • one of the best films ever made.

  • i remember catching this one night on the late late show back in the 79' i woke my mom and dad up from laughing so hard....

  • Welcome to Milton Friedman's world!

  • This needs a Bluray release!

  • this needs an IMAX release!

  • Yes, Imax will be the only way to see this in the quality it was shot in. In the meantime, a BluRay would be nice.

  • Jolly good show I say! Perhaps in 3D too?

  • I will never ever go on a fire escape again, this is why.

  • 2.57 Sylvester almost falls then next shot hes up there again.

  • ur right!!! wierd. thnx for pointing that out

  • did kramer forget to ask charlie chaplin to be in the film or did chaplin refuse?

  • In 1963, Charlie Chaplin had been living in Switzerland, basically thrown out of the U.S.A. It would've been nice to have him, but he would've been in his mid-70's at the time, so he may not have been able to do much

  • Too bad they didn't get the money in the end they could of used it to pay for their hospital bills ROFL.

  • The funniest scene/ ending to a comedy movie of all time

  • ok, thank you hemming57.

  • where was this scene filmed? Looks like an old abandoned apartment complex

  • San Diego

  • I love how pretty much everyone but them gets the money.

  • Where was the large Amusement park rollercoaster seen in the distance?

  • Long Beach

  • You win the cigar. That's an LA County Seagrave K-Series midship mount ladder truck.

  • the part where Culpepper crashes into the pet shop and ends up getting his face licked by the great dane-- hilarious!

  • Agreed. Now that's what I call gone to the dogs! LOL!

  • hahahha joe e brown....eeeeeeeeeaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!

  • Mama AAAAhhhhhh!!!!!

  • the fireman on the latter was the guy who plays winnie the pooh

  • ...oh yeah...thanks..I hadn't realized that despite a dozen viewings of the film. And wasn't that Joe E Brown addressing the hardhat crowd?

  • It was indeed Joe E. Brown addressing the hardhat crowd

  • Best comedy movie ever, and not one curse in the whole thing. A timeless classic.

  • Well, I get your point, but for us IAMMMMW aficionados, there was a curse word in it (along the lines of the first curse word uttered on the silver screen -- Clark Gable's "I don't give a damn"). It's when Culpepper is on the phone with his wife and she asks what the hell is the Smiler Grogan case. But you're right, a classic.

  • @DannyD1199

Welllll... when Smiler finally kicks the bucket in the opening scene, Benji Benjamin says, "... if he jumps up again, I'm gettin' the hell outta here!"

But, I'll let ya slide. ;)

  • I love this movie! This has to be the biggest collection of movie stars ever in a comedy movie. I remember watching this as a kid and it's still hilarious today. It still holds up today with the children laughing their heads off like I used to when we watch it! My favorite line is that momma's boy Sylvester calling for his momma and doing a header into the table of food! HAHAHA

  • I love that scream he makes when he lets go of his branch.

  • the greatest collection of american comics ever, nearly everyone was there, a high point in american culture and art, influenced many people

  • I loved it then, and I love it now.

What a wonderfully funny movie. I wish they made movies like that again.

I guess I will have to keep wishing.

  • Amazing. I've seen the movie at least thrice - in the 1960s and 70s - then on video a few years ago. But this scene seems even more real up close here on youtube. Had me on the edge of my seat. How did they ever film it? There's some things you just can't fake, and even if it is stuntsmen, those are some amazing stunts. Hats off to the actors, director, cameraman.

  • Not as funny now, but back in the day, it was a Riot!!!! People were rolling in their seats!!!

  • one at the time.....

  • At the very end, when they are in hospital, Benji throws a banana slice on the floor. Mrs Marcus, Emmeline and Monica are nurses. Mrs Marcus starts yelling again to the men and then she slips over the banana slice. All the men are laughing.

  • This movie runs 3 hours.

  • I'd like to see the WHOLE traction scene in the end.

  • A true classic, one of the funniest movies ever made, and not a curse word spoken.

  • very over exagerqated, very hilarious.

  • 3:05 "get on alphabetical, I'm Benji!!"

  • Well, I'm Alva.

Not to mention in situations like the ladder with many guys, I'm proud to have a name that starts with 'A'.

  • my favourite is buster keaton's bit; trying not to get killed by all those cars and starting to run in three directions at once.

  • American comedy at its best.top three ground breakers. mad mad mad world. animal house. kingpin. maybe not in that order.mmM i think young frankingstine and trading places should be in there and....

  • That poor poor Seagrave.......

  • so kind of you to share this amazing video clip....how well were films made those days !

  • Joe E Brown...hey.....Hey! HHHHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAYYYYYYY!

    LOL!

  • this is now a trivia question on yahoo answers:who is on the ladder in this scene? i started with the fire escape and in order got spencer tracy, phil silvers, jonathan winters, terry thomas, milton berle, joseph bologna, hans conreid, buddy hackett and "rochester" from the jack benny show. without checking, ithink his name was eddie andersen.fun question!

  • Joseph Bologna was not in the movie. He did, however, play a Sid Caesar type in "My Favorite Year." And Sid Caesar is on the ladder. (He's the first to go.)

Hans Conreid wasn't in the movie either.

Peter Falk, Mickey Rooney, Milton Berle, and Dick Shawn were on the ladder, as was Sterling Holloway, who played the fireman.

  • This one of the all time greatest funny films

    ever.This was re-dun as ratrcase,what pile of

crud. There is nuthin'compared to an original.

  • Sterling Holloway is the Fire Chief..Joe

E.Brown is the labor union spokesman and

Lennie Weinrib is the voice of one of the

    firemen.

  • I have some questions:

    1. Which firefighter is the fire chief?

    2. Is that really Sterling Holloway as the Fire Chief?

Please answer as soon as possible!

  • The guy who climbs up the ladder is Sterling Holloway, a.k.a. The Fire Chief. If you listen to his lines, it sounds like an adult Winnie The Pooh ;)

  • Oh, okay, I get ya!

  • This Is The Best Scene of The Whole Film.

  • This movie must have been stuntman heaven.

  • 5/5 Its my favorite comedy

  • this movie had everybody...jimmy durante, rooney, caesar, silver, faulk, tracy, merman, berle, and cameos by the 3 stooges, and jim backus was the pilot alcholic (btw if u didnt know backus was thurston howell III from gilligan's island)

that black guy btw was eddie anderson and this movie contains tons of suddle stuff like that like in the beginning when durante literally kicks the bucket

  • WHAT ARE YOU? SOME KIND OF SEXUAL NUT?

  • Oh, man, Ethel Merman was priceless in this movie. "You hand that over! Don't you dare touch any of that money!"

  • damn i woulda just climbed back up when all the idiots were swinging

  • Just absolutely sublime!!!

  • The Blackman landed on Abraham's Lincoln lab WTF lol

  • If you look you'll see sylvester hanging onto the edge but one second later he's right near the top. From 2:55 to 2:58 you can see it.

Also does anyone notice the white cabby hanging onto Hawthorne's pants?
