Looks like people didn't complain about the world map here, because basically you're moving on a checkerboard, and not realistic maps and paths. Nice guys.
A mediocre game in my opinion. The combat system and world map are kinda cool, but not brilliant, and pretty much everything else about the game had potential, but never really made an effort. The greater story for example made small, almost guest-appearances here and there. Too little to even spark a genuine interest. Too bad since it still had the potential..
@BadAlternatives RoF is not a game for everyone. They do not tell you the story outright. Each mission give you a piece of the story (not in chronological order), and you have to piece the story together. Some people dislike that and rather story be told like a bed time story. Personally I like this type of story telling, it is a refreshing change from the standard RPG storyline design.
I hate these big-name reviews now. Seriously, it's as if each reviewer goes out of their way to pander to the simplest watchers. (Of course, this category makes up the majority of the viewers. Damn you, world!)

Alright, so I am unsure of what I should buy, I have never played a JRPG before, but I love western RPGs, I have seen reviews on Resonance of Fate and Final Fantasy 13, I don't have the money for both, so can anyone kind of nudge me in the direction of the better game? story is very important to me as well so thank you for your time
@NoLuck87 If you like seeing the subtleties under the game while, and this may seem paradoxical, not being thrown off by linearity (essentially, being more attached to the story and formal plot than the world and side-quests) then FF13 is probably a good buy. Both have very unique and fun combat systems. I preferred FF13's slightly, especially after learning a good amount of the timing and strategy quirks involved, but that is of course just a personal preference.
@NoLuck87 You might not like JRPGs altogether. Unlike the open worlds found in most western RPGs, JRPGs tend to be very linear and story driven. A lot of western RPG players tend to be driven away by that. Personally, I enjoy playing both Western and Japanese RPGs. Western for the free and open world, and Japanese for the story and character design.
The map system and environments in this game look weak so those complaining about it in 13 are hypocrites fanboys just bashing because it went multi-platform
You people please top arguing about FF13.......we all know that the real enemy is Resident evil 4,which is becoming the Street fighter 2 of our generation by bein on every single fucking console, cellphone, calculator and refrigerators with screen in order to be know by every single fucking living thing on the universe.
The battle system in RoF is so much more complex than FF13. That can be both good and bad. In FF13 it felt like a long tutorial until ch.9, in RoF, right at ch.1 you're fighting real enemies. The boss in ch.1 is pretty hard, too me about 5+ tries to finally kill him. The graphics of RoF is pretty bad compared to FF13, but the cutscenes are still good looking.
@Kenna77 ,play it at 1080p and smoke weed ,,then tell me if u dont like it,,just finish today 65 hrs ,,amazing game,,,i dont care abour ff7 or ffx ,final fantasy 13 is a good game chapter 11 is sick
@Bullfrog1983 I don't think you played FF13. Battle system of that game is Beast fast paced and really good, but sadly its the only good thing about it. That and also the graphic not the best, but its good.
heh this is one of the game where I have to seriously scratch my heads and planning all over every battle of the game: where to jump, when to shoot, where to run, and what bullet to shoot. Story is indeed getting nowhere, and repeated action can be boring to some people. However, after getting used to them all, this is perhaps one of the best game I ever played with super challenging stages. Oh and the story got me laughing hard twice, especially "trusty magnum" part...hahaha!
Back in the day, roleplaying game characters were immersive, and the game played like a complex strategey, and your character's decisions were important. You'd spend a half hour just talking to people and saying the right thing.
Then you final fantasy faggots showed up and said this garbage with its mary sue cartwheeling emos is "roleplaying"
@GoblinsnHobbits just because the games of your time were not as fun as these dont get upset at good games. oh and shut up troller. oh and some games in the past are good but thats opinian not fact.
that's pretty amusing. games today i find incredibly not fun. I don't get to immerse in the role at all.
games "of my time" were much more fun as role-playing games. You actually *gasp* played a role! Your character's personality was important to the plot! It was like... MAGIC OR SOMETHING!!!!
The fundmental issue i have with "role playing games" today is that they are not role playing games; they are movies with combat sequences.
@SmoothCriminalAaron I dont know, i think your better off starting with something easier. If you have patience then go out and buy it, and just give it a shot (its $30 used, so its not to bad). You just gotta remember that this isnt like other types of games, RPGS are known for being long and difficult in parts.
I suggest picking this up with FF13, and just alternate when you get stressed on one (which will happen).
@SmoothCriminalAaron No no no no no, this game is WAY too difficult and complex for a new RPG gamer, I suggest an easier game, maybe try one of the Tales games, since they are easy to pick up and play, but tough to master.
@SmoothCriminalAaron oh god no! This game is very difficult. I would say Kingdom Hearts is a good game to start with ( on the ps2 and also my fav RPG ever!) or any game from the Tales series( Tales of Vesperia is my fav. one. It is for the Xbox 360) or maybe even eternal sonata for the Xbox 360. final fantasy is good too but, it can be difficult as well at some points in the games. RPGS are awesome! You should play some for sure! :)
@SmoothCriminalAaron probably you shouldn't listen to these guys here. what they are saying is that you will have a harder time playing this game because you've never beaten kingdom hearts. i say that's bullshit. its idiotic even.
you will play this game and go through the tutorial and have no more or less difficulty playing it than anyone else. if you like how the game looks then get it.
I think the reason they thought it was so challenging is beacause they were underleveled... They were 30's fighting Tri-Stamp... I'm 50's half way through chapter 7.
Why oh why cant americans just leave the japanese voice acting alone in games? Especially considering how amazingly SHIT english voice actors are. Whats more they dont even select someone who can do a voice that even fits the character or their personality! Its like reading a dramatic book and all the characters voices come out as sounding like whiny annoying assholes in your head. >_<
America should be banned, forever, from dubbing anything.
@Lostfaith1980 If you wanna see good voice acting try Infinite Undiscovery one of the best Next Gen JRpG's imo. Though the voice syncing is fucking terrible i've never seen anygame that so off.
I just hated FF13 could somebody give me the name of a good modern rpg game similar 2 FF ....i know u cant compare but something that would help me overcome the failure of FF13?????
@Marionet64 well i liked FF 13. for me it was way, but waay better than 12. but i imagine that you didn't like it because of the so argued linearity. if that's so, try the last installment of the star ocean series. it's a classic j-rpg, and it's quite open.
@MGSBigBoss1964 exploration i agree, and the voice acting was ok. but content... story...? are we talking about the same game? it seemed to me like a mmorpg, but... an offline one. no story, charactors with no depth at all or whatsoever. and it has an explanation for that. the team and director responsible for the title changed many times. so it was a lousy job square-enix did. but the visuals and gameplay are great though.
@FredSilmo Just the director has changed not the team, it has always been the Tactics and Vagrant Story team. The reason the director changed is because he became very ill. The Gambit system and license board is the greatest progression and customization options invented I only wish the FFXII international edition Zodiac Job system came to the US. The story behind Vayne, The Judges, Rabanastre and Dalmasca was very intriguing. Not to mention giving equal time to all characters. Everyone had
@MGSBigBoss1964 Everyone had purpose, they all had their own backgrounds, conflicts, and resolve to be pursued. Basch and Balthier and Ashe are amongst the best characters created. The dark political, betrayal, and being on the run theme is unmatched. The ones who do not appreciate what FFXII did obviously have ADD or feel the need of pop-culture anime love stories needing to be obvious for a FF game. BTW FF8 is a close runner up for me in being the best FF game ever made.
@MGSBigBoss1964 Well, we agree in one thing, FF8 is one of the best for me too. Most FF fans dislike that game, but it's one of my favorites from the series. But i thought FF12's story and charactors were very poor. For exemple, I find FF 10's story quite stupid, but it's catchy, and so are the charactors...
@FredSilmo See I hated FFX characters except for Auron really, Jecht was decent, But the bad guys are fairly memorable Seymour and Yunalesca. The story to me was average but the game was great for its time. I feel that the way the cutscenes are done in FFXII its amazing and the dialog is just perfect. the scene leading to the first fight with gabranth was among the most memorable scenes. Aside from that FF8 is the game that feels most complete in terms of ending and all.
@oneupdawg FFXII revitalized my spirits for FF games after FFX leaving me worried as i believe to this day it was a ff game that was never meant to exist. FFXII is perfect story telling with Vaan being literally like the player, exploring a world that not even Vaan knows exists thats vast and full of things to find. The story unfolds to Vaan just like it did for the player. It really felt like you were Vaan when you were playing. Same goes for Squall with dialog choices and seeing in his mind.
@MGSBigBoss1964 Exactly. FFXII felt like playing the FF's in the 16bit era. The world of Ivalice is some, if not the best world Square has come up with. They should spend more time with that and stop using Tetsuya Nomura for a while because his artwork and "vision" is becoming too damn predictable and elementary. FFXII gave players the feeling of exploring a rich world at their own pace not forced down hallways shown in FFXIII.
@oneupdawg Ivalice and its history that you can uncover in FFXII and Tactics is deep. Theres so much they can do with Ivalice is right and the species. The Fabula Crystallis projects or whatever the whole world is lame. They touted how FF13, FFV13 and FF Agito 13 are all using the fabula crystallis world which is supposed to be so grand yet you cant even explore it. Let alone its not even unified because FF13 already uses cutscenes to progress you from 1 area to the next. Its really lame.
@MGSBigBoss1964 Yes lets Talk about FF on a RoF Review, but i might as well say Something even this is like a week Old i Agree with you about FF12, though i never got to get completely into it since my Ps2 Broke and i havn't bothered to buy a new one and i sold my 100 odd games, but bro come on Don't Diss on FF13 like everyone else, it's a good game in it's own way. Alot of people just hate on it because "It's not FF7" Which is stupid they can't think for themselves.
@Mekitzu Well I'm not a FF7 fan thats in the middle or lower middle end of my favorites... FF13 isn't a good game on its way its FF Fanboys that will consider it a good game. If another FF game is made as linear and blatant throwaway of traditions or precedents like FF13 it will not be good for the core fans. People have to let Square Enix know they messed up and people will not buy their games based on name anymore. It angers me that fanboys are ruining FF games by ignoring inherent flaws.
@MGSBigBoss1964 I honestly don't get why people hate it the only flaw i really see in the game is the auto-battle being easy mode and the lack of openess till chapter 11.
@Mekitzu The dialog which seems to be put into the game without localizers or developers reading it... The openness you describe that happens what 35 hours in? Depending on the player... there really is no point of it that late in the game and still there is little to do and very little variety or personality. Also the only way of getting say the ultimate weapons and breaking damage cap is AFTER you kill the final boss and complete 90% of the game estimate. Its very poorly made with no hindsight
lol never even heard of this game! cant believe they released it at the same time as ff13! game suicide haha might have to check this out looks different to most rpgs and a decent challenge!
Most people who are still deciding to get this game should it is fun but there is almost no tutorial and the booklet in the case doesn't even help it just tells you what things are but not how to do certain but don't let that deter you the achievement factor gained from this game is amazing, when one figures out how to do a smackdown or the such it is very satisfying.
How hard is this game exactly? From reading a few of the comments it seem alot of you are having a hard time with the game. Mt question is, Would you say its as hard as Lost odyssey? Because before I bought that game I heard people saying it was hard and right now im on disk 3 and still havent had to grind at all. Whats makes this so hard?
ive logged like twenty game hours, and its pretty hard. the damn bosses are beast shit. sick game though. graphics could be better, but i like it. a lot.
this guy literally made me go out and buy this game. and look. 20 minutes later and a trip to gamestop, and the game is in my hands as i speak. or write...
Vanquish frustrated the shit out of me, but I completed it. I had obtained it last week and completed it last week, so I really don't have the patience or will to play another hard game.
OMFG OMFG OMFG!!! i cant stop laughing when i see that guy running like a? idiot clown. gameplay was awesome. interesting battle system xD and i like all the jumpings. this is my next game for SURE!
@InsultingJoker I'm playing FF13, it's really linear for the first 10 chapters. I haven't played this game at all, but at least it sounds like it has more freedom for exploring.
I will say now that this game will definitely make you feel like a bad ass with all the jump shooting and flipping, but if you want a good story, this game is not for you.
finally a game that captivated me!, from the first time i saw its wallpaper, i new this was something more interesting than the rpg for beginners FF13
Certainly looks difficult, but I've always been for strategic gameplay. I hope I can grasp the active battle system soon enough for it not to be a problem. Hope I get this game for Christmas!
I would just like to say that I am not going to watch this because there is a spoiler. I thank you for your warning... But I am trying to decide to buy the game or not! Why involve spoilers in a video game review by such a large company/site as Gamespot?! Come on now...
man... im sorrry not to be a hater and i think this game looks pretty fun but i cant stand many guns with even the slightly involvment of guns =( COD and other shooters killed my love for any sorta of guns in games
@NinkaPanda hehe you read way to much into my comment i never said nor did i really suggest this was a FPS i was saying that the COD series made me develope a hate for the use of guns in any games (i prefer melee and magic) my comment also said it looked fun despite my hate for guns i dont really get were u were coming from with the talk of FPS
This looks like it's gonna be an amazing game, bit nervous for the challenge, but hopefully the fun overshadows the difficulty.
Oh, and for all those people bitching about FF13, it may not be the best in the series but people are paying to much attention to other games in the franchise and are not really seeing the game for what it really is, a stunningly beautiful, rich, deep world. Really get into the gameplay and trust me you...will...enjoy peace ;D
@Kemsti I love you lol. Completely agree with you on final fantasy XIII, and resonance of fate is difficult, but once you get it down and you know what you're doing you'll be fine
@Kemsti I tried, for SO long to get into final fantasy 13. It didn't work. Constant battles, constant grinding, by the time I was at a high enough level to continue I forgot the story. Maybe I'm just not good at it, I don't know, but I was great at every other ff game I played.
@numberninteynine Well I guess it's not a game for everybody, but what really matters is if u got you're money's worth and i hope you at least got that :)
I have spent 30 + hours on this game since I bought it about 2 weeks ago, and I am only on the 5th Chapter. The very addictive tactical tri-attack combat system takes some time to master, but this is what sets this game apart from other run-off-the-mill RPGs.
You will only die often if you don't level up ( an insane amount of grinding is required in this game and I consider that fun ). Also, recklessly rushing your way through the game will result in nothing but frustration.
Just bought it yesterday, first impression: this is what FFXIII should have been. Seriously, if this gameplay was carried over to a FF game, it would be kick ass.
Dang man, I want user comments on the game. Everybody is talking about how FFXIII sucks. Okay, it was linear, it was alot of the same. (Though I personally loved the paradigms and battle system.) But what about THIS game. Is the reviewer on or off about it? I'm thinking of buying it.
Buy this game. But this is not a simple game you need time to learn how to play. It's hard at first...
The characters are so damn well made. The less characters a RPG has the better they are... You can see that they worked damn good in thier back stories and atittude.
Something is only called revolutionary if it changes things. If a bunch of games copy Resoance of fate that you can say it revolutionized rpgs. If no games copy than you say it is a unique rpg.
i've never played a RPG before, none of the FF games either but the combat in this looks sick, i dont really like RPG games. is it my piece of cake or not ? Need help from you RPG fans, buy: yes or no ? :)
@Rizzy786 It is an RPG, there is lvling up, questing and so forth. But it is so fast paced and action focused that it feels like a hybrid of, lets say, Devil May Cry and the Matrix, mixed with a Turn Based Combat Style.
Looks like people didn't complain about the world map here, because basically you're moving on a checkerboard, and not realistic maps and paths. Nice guys.

@NoLuck87 If you like seeing the subtleties under the game while, and this may seem paradoxical, not being thrown off by linearity (essentially, being more attached to the story and formal plot than the world and side-quests) then FF13 is probably a good buy. Both have very unique and fun combat systems. MarksmanSpec93 10 months ago

The graphics of RoF is pretty bad compared to FF13, but the cutscenes are still good looking.

heh this is one of the game where I have to seriously scratch my heads and planning all over every battle of the game: where to jump, when to shoot, where to run, and what bullet to shoot. Story is indeed getting nowhere, and repeated action can be boring to some people. However, after getting used to them all, this is perhaps one of the best game I ever played with super challenging stages. Oh and the story got me laughing hard twice, especially "trusty magnum" part...hahaha!

You damn kids.

Not as fun?
that's pretty amusing. games today i find incredibly not fun.

I suggest picking this up with FF13, and just alternate when you get stressed on one (which will happen).

swordfish1390 1 year ago
@SmoothCriminalAaron oh god no! This game is very difficult. I would say Kingdom Hearts is a good game to start with ( on the ps2 and also my fav RPG ever!) or any game from the Tales series( Tales of Vesperia is my fav. one. It is for the Xbox 360) or maybe even eternal sonata for the Xbox 360. final fantasy is good too but, it can be difficult as well at some points in the games. RPGS are awesome! You should play some for sure! :)
simpleandclean7676 1 year ago
@SmoothCriminalAaron probably you shouldn't listen to these guys here. what they are saying is that you will have a harder time playing this game because you've never beaten kingdom hearts. i say that's bullshit. its idiotic even.
you will play this game and go through the tutorial and have no more or less difficulty playing it than anyone else. if you like how the game looks then get it.

FredSilmo 1 year ago
@FredSilmo 12 destroyed FF13 in content, story and exploration. The biggest FF game to date and with the best voice acting and theme.
MGSBigBoss1964 1 year ago
@MGSBigBoss1964 exploration i agree, and the voice acting was ok. but content... story...? are we talking about the same game? it seemed to me like a mmorpg, but... an offline one. no story, charactors with no depth at all or whatsoever. and it has an explanation for that. the team and director responsible for the title changed many times. so it was a lousy job square-enix did. but the visuals and gameplay are great though.
FredSilmo 1 year ago
@FredSilmo Just the director has changed not the team, it has always been the Tactics and Vagrant Story team. The reason the director changed is because he became very ill. The Gambit system and license board is the greatest progression and customization options invented I only wish the FFXII international edition Zodiac Job system came to the US. The story behind Vayne, The Judges, Rabanastre and Dalmasca was very intriguing. Not to mention giving equal time to all characters. Everyone had
MGSBigBoss1964 1 year ago
@MGSBigBoss1964 Everyone had purpose, they all had their own backgrounds, conflicts, and resolve to be pursued. Basch and Balthier and Ashe are amongst the best characters created. The dark political, betrayal, and being on the run theme is unmatched. The ones who do not appreciate what FFXII did obviously have ADD or feel the need of pop-culture anime love stories needing to be obvious for a FF game. BTW FF8 is a close runner up for me in being the best FF game ever made.
MGSBigBoss1964 1 year ago
@MGSBigBoss1964 Well, we agree in one thing, FF8 is one of the best for me too. Most FF fans dislike that game, but it's one of my favorites from the series. But i thought FF12's story and charactors were very poor. For exemple, I find FF 10's story quite stupid, but it's catchy, and so are the charactors...
FredSilmo 1 year ago
@FredSilmo See I hated FFX characters except for Auron really, Jecht was decent, But the bad guys are fairly memorable Seymour and Yunalesca. The story to me was average but the game was great for its time. I feel that the way the cutscenes are done in FFXII its amazing and the dialog is just perfect. the scene leading to the first fight with gabranth was among the most memorable scenes. Aside from that FF8 is the game that feels most complete in terms of ending and all.
MGSBigBoss1964 1 year ago
@MGSBigBoss1964 So true. FFXII was a magnificent game. So much content, its incredible.
oneupdawg 1 year ago
@oneupdawg FFXII revitalized my spirits for FF games after FFX leaving me worried as i believe to this day it was a ff game that was never meant to exist. FFXII is perfect story telling with Vaan being literally like the player, exploring a world that not even Vaan knows exists thats vast and full of things to find. The story unfolds to Vaan just like it did for the player. It really felt like you were Vaan when you were playing. Same goes for Squall with dialog choices and seeing in his mind.
MGSBigBoss1964 1 year ago
@MGSBigBoss1964 Exactly. FFXII felt like playing the FF's in the 16bit era. The world of Ivalice is some, if not the best world Square has come up with. They should spend more time with that and stop using Tetsuya Nomura for a while because his artwork and "vision" is becoming too damn predictable and elementary. FFXII gave players the feeling of exploring a rich world at their own pace not forced down hallways shown in FFXIII.
oneupdawg 1 year ago
@oneupdawg Ivalice and its history that you can uncover in FFXII and Tactics is deep. Theres so much they can do with Ivalice is right and the species. The Fabula Crystallis projects or whatever the whole world is lame. They touted how FF13, FFV13 and FF Agito 13 are all using the fabula crystallis world which is supposed to be so grand yet you cant even explore it. Let alone its not even unified because FF13 already uses cutscenes to progress you from 1 area to the next. Its really lame.
MGSBigBoss1964 1 year ago
@oneupdawg Oh and Ivalice is also Vagrant Story if I am not mistaken.
MGSBigBoss1964 1 year ago
@MGSBigBoss1964 Yes lets Talk about FF on a RoF Review, but i might as well say Something even this is like a week Old i Agree with you about FF12, though i never got to get completely into it since my Ps2 Broke and i havn't bothered to buy a new one and i sold my 100 odd games, but bro come on Don't Diss on FF13 like everyone else, it's a good game in it's own way. Alot of people just hate on it because "It's not FF7" Which is stupid they can't think for themselves.
Mekitzu 1 year ago
@Mekitzu Well I'm not a FF7 fan thats in the middle or lower middle end of my favorites... FF13 isn't a good game on its way its FF Fanboys that will consider it a good game. If another FF game is made as linear and blatant throwaway of traditions or precedents like FF13 it will not be good for the core fans. People have to let Square Enix know they messed up and people will not buy their games based on name anymore. It angers me that fanboys are ruining FF games by ignoring inherent flaws.
MGSBigBoss1964 1 year ago
@MGSBigBoss1964 I honestly don't get why people hate it the only flaw i really see in the game is the auto-battle being easy mode and the lack of openess till chapter 11.
Mekitzu 1 year ago
@Mekitzu The dialog which seems to be put into the game without localizers or developers reading it... The openness you describe that happens what 35 hours in? Depending on the player... there really is no point of it that late in the game and still there is little to do and very little variety or personality. Also the only way of getting say the ultimate weapons and breaking damage cap is AFTER you kill the final boss and complete 90% of the game estimate. Its very poorly made with no hindsight
