Basically I found tool out by APC through the connection of Maynard being in them both, and i'm loving all the songs i've heard by them so far, They make quite a few songs over 5 minutes! :D
This song is about whoever the fuck i want it to be about at the time i listen to it.
If i happen to connect with a good "my girlfriend is a cheating whore song" I don't give a fuck which girlfriend the artist wrote the song about, it automatically becomes about my cheating whore girlfriend.
Guys: I have to say this. Why do so many people say who they thought the song was about or state who the song most likely ISN'T even related to. Tool is on a different plane than the rest of us so seriously don't even try, just let the music wash over you instead of trying to understand it when you never will
@apc6483 Considering Maynard writes songs about either himself, family, former lover, son etc I would say this song is about himself. He wrote his own eulogy to get over his own arrogance, ego, etc.......listen deeper...think deeper.......I know you're gonna hear they said in an interview that they said it was about Bill Hicks....I'd say the same thing if I didn't want to explain my art and life to a bunch of simpletons.
@apc6483 ITS ABOUT HOW RELIGION GO WORSHIP WHO YOU WANT ....FOR SOME REASON TOOL BASHING A RELIGION THAT MADE ME POST THIS ...TOOL MUSIC IS GREAT FUCK IT
@apc6483 - My guess is that it's about Bill Hicks. He died right before this album came out and he was a friend of the band's... also he was a political comedian, so 'he had a lot to say.'
well this kind of poetic rock is not really about what the singer is trying to say its open for interpretation. this song to me is about my highly religious father. im an athiest and we could never have a real relationship because ultamately he believed i was going to a place of eternal torment because i didnt't think the same. its really about a person with absolute views in a world where we need to be comfortable with not knowing. give this some thumbs up :D
@apc6483 Maynard himself has given so many differing interpretations of what many of his songs mean, The best thing about Tool is how we can relate their songs to situations in our own lives, even if that is not the meaning that Maynard intended. So just share the love with all these people who recognize how great this song is!
@apc6483 I just read like 3 pages about hubbard and scientology, it seems pretty decent in the sense of finding spiritual freedom (in a sense, the way he put it was pretty far out there, and not like the "into the wild" sense which seems more right to the human being), but the rest seems pretty put to give a hopeless human hope, like bull shit put on display, what are you thoughts on it? (i am not at all a ferm believer in religion, not trying to offend any one)
@MeteoraCyst yes that is true, this is my fav song, but tool is good in general. they are the most musically inclined people ive ever listened to. have you ever hurd a band quite like this
@MeteoraCyst tired of people saying NO the whole song is the best part or 0:00 to 8:29 is the best part.. if the whole song is the best part of a song then its not a part. nor would it be better then somthing.
I think all that Maynard wants us to do is listen to the fucking music; and decide for ourselves the meaning of the song...you know, have our own meaning of it. It could mean different things to different ppl, -Thats why its ART!!
I thought it was a reference to his profession as comedian, people took it as jokes, he spent his life trying to spread a positive message to people who would just overlook his words or didn't want to hear them and in all died for nothing, with little notoriety, making him a 'fool martyr' who didn't reach an elevated state of divinity in the hearts and minds of the globe.
It's about L Ron Hubbard according to Danny. That's why it has such a negative under current. I could never understand the Bill Hicks connection as it seemed so disrespectul. "a lot of nothing to say" never sat with me.
Not saying I don't recognize myself as part of the unified structure, just that when it is time for my ego to fully dissolve it will. Now is the time for learning and contributing to the consciousness in an individual manner, a more unified yet 'unseen' existence awaits me after this.
Most Tool fans fancy themselves as more enlightened individuals. Problem is right there, individuals. They get stuck in the ego, as someone who fills his free time with exploring anything I can, I can honestly say the hardest part about learning new things is you're ingraining them into your individual identity and it gets increasingly harder to consider yourself 'of the whole' when you see no one else thinking as you do.
I think that any Tool song will eventually end up meaning whatever you need it to mean. I have sure seen a lot of people argue over Tool lyrics. That's I have stopped Ranting and pointing my finger over it and just listen
"come down get off your fuckin cross. we need the fuckin space to nail the next fool martyr" who else will claim there saviors? and have people follow them with a blind, uneducated mind pittied for sympathy of hope. listen to the anger of his tone in this song compared to the others, this is Maynards Eulogy to Jeus saying you shouldve been dead long time ago. because he had alot of NOTHING to say. and being sarcastic saying we are going to miss him. he didnt want to listen but he was SO LOUD.
also. back in the "bible" days they, who im pretty sure were Jewish, crucified alot more people than Jesus, and thats what i get from this song when Maynard says " will you die for me, dont fuckin lie, you must be crucified" because there were more than one person walking around in those times claiming to be "Mesiahs", "Saviors" etc... clearly why "jesus" didnt have any accountability. but all in all you get what you want from the song till Maynard shoots you with a noted bullet of his meaning.
uhhhh clearly theres ALOT of unedecuted people popping off at the jaws and dont mind if i join, but with the little knowledge i have i can tell you Bill Hicks was a "idol" of Maynards and he wouldnt have this anger in his lyrics towards him calling him a martyr and so on... oh and Definately wasnt crucified on a cross, This song is clearly talking about JESUS being that Maynard has a past and present resentment towards Religion becuase of for one his mother being paralyzed all of his life.
Whuh?? Skip the intro? Un-fucking heard of. Blah what a waste of music!! The intro's my favorite part. And so is the middle....and the end. Oh,damn that's the whole song, isn't it? ; ) I stand by my words.
Thought he was talking about Jesus. Any why is it that Tool fans are so...rude? I'm sure Mayna wouldn't aprove of you people who think you know evething.
@blackopsrule Its not only Tool fans but people on YouTube in general.. Trolls all around us, do not feed them for more will come. Anyways I love this music and I love the fact so many people get so many different interpretations :) Thats what makes Tool the best in my opinion.
@blackopsrule I think this song is about JFK. Many of his speeches were warnings of the mafia takeover of the government. A lot of tool songs are political.
@blackopsrule I agree...while debating things can be fun, some take it too far and become uncivilized.
Though for me, I dont think its about jesus necessarily. Think about it. "not all martyrs seek divinity"...that assumes that it is possible to attain divinity. But who? How do you tell the real from the fake? You really can't, but cult leaders exploit that all the time from gullible followers.
@tbnabf actually maynard has said its about bill hicks ...educate yourself before you state a fact ...plus this was written before kurt blew his face off....maynard has no sympathy for junkies
@robpavi1 Technically, since you shot it down, it wasn't in fact a fact, bro. So, before you tell someone to educate themselves, make sure you are well educated yourself, love. ♥
@morzan383 You're 100% correct. Maynard dedicated it to Bill Hicks. They both held contempt for Hubbard, and this song is so clearly about Hubbard if you read anything on Scientology.
@robpavi1 Maynard has also stated hedoesn't "...not listen to music by junkies or people so weak that they kill themselves". Wether he was joking or not is hard to tell. Nope, nevermind it's about Hicks and I agreee with you.
@robpavi1 Maynard has also stated he doesn't "...listen to music by junkies or people so weak that they kill themselves". Wether he was joking or not is hard to tell. Nope, nevermind it's about Hicks and I agreee with you.
@blackopsrule That's simple. Tool's songs are full of meaning. To the individual & to the collective. There are deeper meanings hidden within various songs that only if you're "Smart enough" will you understand. For instance there is a lot of astrological geometry in Danny's drumming patterns, but what that means I cannot begin to tell you. Basically Tool fans cannot seem to let their egos go. Hmmm, now where does that sound familiar from?
@robpavi1 Why don't YOU educate yourself before stating something as fact. Maynard did an interview with Kurt Loder where he expressed sorrow for the passing of Layne Staley - who, as we all know, was a "junkie" that died of an overdose - and stated that he has an urge "to help other people who are on that borderline....". So, please, shut up, you arrogant, heartless fuck.
layne staley preformed with tool on numerous occasions. i think maynard did a whole tour with alice in chains sometime after layne died... if not it was atleast a couple of concerts.
@robpavi1 This song is NOT about kurt cobain and it's NOT about Bill Hicks either. They were friends. I'd like to see where maynard said that. and not in print either. his own voice
Just because the song sounds like its about jesus, dos'n make it about him, Iv heard a list the lenght about the lenght of my arm who's it about, A true tool fan wouldnt give a fuck and just enjoy the song, So put the handbags away and enjoy!
the guy is talking about his dad cuz he died

"come down get off your fuckin cross. we need the fuckin space to nail the next fool martyr" who else will claim there saviors? and have people follow them with a blind, uneducated mind pittied for sympathy of hope. listen to the anger of his tone in this song compared to the others, this is Maynards Eulogy to Jeus saying you shouldve been dead long time ago. because he had alot of NOTHING to say. and being sarcastic saying we are going to miss him. he didnt want to listen but he was SO LOUD.
TheDelliman23 4 months ago
also. back in the "bible" days they, who im pretty sure were Jewish, crucified alot more people than Jesus, and thats what i get from this song when Maynard says " will you die for me, dont fuckin lie, you must be crucified" because there were more than one person walking around in those times claiming to be "Mesiahs", "Saviors" etc... clearly why "jesus" didnt have any accountability. but all in all you get what you want from the song till Maynard shoots you with a noted bullet of his meaning.
TheDelliman23 4 months ago
uhhhh clearly theres ALOT of unedecuted people popping off at the jaws and dont mind if i join, but with the little knowledge i have i can tell you Bill Hicks was a "idol" of Maynards and he wouldnt have this anger in his lyrics towards him calling him a martyr and so on... oh and Definately wasnt crucified on a cross, This song is clearly talking about JESUS being that Maynard has a past and present resentment towards Religion becuase of for one his mother being paralyzed all of his life.
TheDelliman23 4 months ago
Whuh?? Skip the intro? Un-fucking heard of. Blah what a waste of music!! The intro's my favorite part. And so is the middle....and the end. Oh,damn that's the whole song, isn't it? ; ) I stand by my words.
RoniePryor 4 months ago 2
Thought he was talking about Jesus. Any why is it that Tool fans are so...rude? I'm sure Mayna wouldn't aprove of you people who think you know evething.

@blackopsrule Its not only Tool fans but people on YouTube in general.. Trolls all around us, do not feed them for more will come. Anyways I love this music and I love the fact so many people get so many different interpretations :) Thats what makes Tool the best in my opinion.

@blackopsrule Tool is music that caters more toward the inteligent. The inteligent tend to ah, 'look down' apon the uninteligent.

@XA55A55INX You do see the irony in your statements on 'inteligence', don't you?

@blackopsrule I think this song is about JFK. Many of his speeches were warnings of the mafia takeover of the government. A lot of tool songs are political.

@blackopsrule I agree...while debating things can be fun, some take it too far and become uncivilized.
Though for me, I dont think its about jesus necessarily. Think about it. "not all martyrs seek divinity"...that assumes that it is possible to attain divinity. But who? How do you tell the real from the fake? You really can't, but cult leaders exploit that all the time from gullible followers.
AliceNchainz011 3 months ago
@blackopsrule Sorry, i meant "see divinity", not seek
AliceNchainz011 3 months ago
I'm not rude. At least I don't think I am. And besides I listen to Tool's music because it's good music, not because I'm seeking approval from them.

LetUsMosh2012 6 months ago
@robpavi1 actually its dedicated to bill hicks (a close friend of maynard) and its about L Ron Hubbard.
morzan383 6 months ago 3
@morzan383 You're 100% correct. Maynard dedicated it to Bill Hicks. They both held contempt for Hubbard, and this song is so clearly about Hubbard if you read anything on Scientology.

@robpavi1 Maynard has also stated hedoesn't "...not listen to music by junkies or people so weak that they kill themselves". Wether he was joking or not is hard to tell. Nope, nevermind it's about Hicks and I agreee with you.

@robpavi1 1996 came after 1994, just so you know.
Gorfeind 4 months ago
@robpavi1 I would say its a tribute to Bill Hicks religious opinions then about him, but to each his/her own I suppose.

@robpavi1
didnt kurt disrespect maynard and his band?
Steve34ization 4 months ago
@robpavi1 Why don't YOU educate yourself before stating something as fact. Maynard did an interview with Kurt Loder where he expressed sorrow for the passing of Layne Staley - who, as we all know, was a "junkie" that died of an overdose - and stated that he has an urge "to help other people who are on that borderline....". So, please, shut up, you arrogant, heartless fuck.
pencilinablender 3 months ago 11
@pencilinablender
layne staley preformed with tool on numerous occasions. i think maynard did a whole tour with alice in chains sometime after layne died... if not it was atleast a couple of concerts.
