@JayJohn011 He means when you want to go back to a key, use the five chord of the new key to create the pull back to the one chord, so in this case, you want to go back to Ab so the chord before will be an Eb7 of some kind.

How do you not get lost when improvising? I have a horrible problem with and it haunts me when I attempt to. And it causes me to stay basic.

@anointed33 Don't overplay your skill level. The more you add to your vocabulary, the more you can do safely. Don't try to do stuff outside of your category until you have perfected it first at home in practice time!

It sounds like you are a self taught musician. If so, you should transcribe as many solos as you can. When I was learning I would get a new solo a least once a week. Once you do this a bunch, start picking out the main riffs and begin transcribe them in every key. Start applying them in every solo you take, and make them your own. This mixed in with some light theory will do wonders for your vocabulary. Eventually improvisation wont seem so scary.

This is just my two cents contribution to whoever is interested...a passing chord you could use to get back to the Ab Major 9 is Db9/Eb or an even better chord would be holding A and E with your left hand and G, C, Db, F, Ab with your right hand (my apologies to the theory heads for i know not the name of the chord) Hope this helps.

say Doc, what does adding the Right hand to to the voice....i guessing more phat right. How o you know which notes to add in to order to give that sound. I for the 4, the Ab maj 9th is Ab, C,Eb, F(7th) and then Bb. But fingers have some but change it up a bit. In regards to the same chord you play the Ab in stead of the F and then you add on your right hand the Bb, Eb and F. What's up with that ? I can't wait to learn from your answer. Humbled. @AfroNigerianMan I wish I could just sit here and tell you over a message, but there is not easy answer. That's just all years, and years of experience and knowing a ton of different substitutions. I teach all of this stuff on all of my many DVDs. Something like this takes years and years of practice. It's like trying to take 15-years and just give it to you over night. It takes time, but with the DVDs, I cut the time dramatically, because I give to you what I struggled to get!

@hiojay : No. It would be called a Bb13sus. :-) It's a BIG difference. The sus creates a very open sound. After this chord you can really go wherever you'd like to go.
