I find it funny how small the first kid is. Someone down our street has one of these and i can hardly ride it when the seats all the way back... i am 6ft 3 though...
So kids must wear helmets on BigWheels and GreenMachines now,...WTF.
I challenge somebody to note one incident of a child getting a head injury on those things. You are only 6 inches from the ground. That is like wearing a life preserver while brushing your teeth.
@ohioplayerinva Big Wheels? No. Green Machines? Depends on the kid. Riding them in the 1970s, we watched kids banging their heads off the pavement almost daily. Once you get up a good amount of speed, and hit the spin, it really is uncontrollable -- which is the fun and the danger of it. As kids, we called it the Concussion Machine for a reason.
@TheHiltnerds I had one in the 70's as a kid and was wild on it on pavement. Never fell over nor witness any of my friends hit their heads. It was nothing but high speed fun.
@ohioplayerinva Funny story. I almost lost my toe when I was a kid, riding my bigwheel.I wasn't wearing shoes or socks, and my left big toe got stuck in between the pedal.Unbeknownst to me, i pedaled with my right leg, toe got trapped in between the pedal and the housing, and my toe was severed to the bone. One piece of skin was holding my toe together, The force broke my toe also and left with a pool of blood and had to get 30 stitches when i was 6 years old. :/
@ohioplayerinva I so agree - i try not to laugh at the kids now a days but you could not pay me to wear a helmet i would have been banned from my Green Machine Club. Rule # 1 there are no helmets in the Green Machine Club Rule #2 There are NO helmets in the Green Machine Club !!
Cool. I remember these... they go quite a ways back don't they? A kid on our block had one when I was still young enough to be riding my "cheetah" in the mid to late 70's. My "cheetah" was one of the small company Big Wheel copies, but with superior quality that still didn't gain popularity. With a "real" front wheel (rubber tire, spokes), some metal frame work, it was slightly heavier but I always roasted the other kids top speeds. We still wanted the "Green Machine" though.
nice - if you build a high speed version for adults add an oil damper - like a shock absorber to stop sudden movements from potholes bricks etc it will allow you to turn at a controlled rate but will resist sudden big movements - the nice thing about this is that you can use it inside an aerodynamic body and the wheels dont stick out when you turn - in other words you dont need wheel arches so you body shell will have less drag
A friend of mine had one of those. He also had a really steep driveway that we used to scream down and do giant 360 skids at the bottom. And we definately weren't wearing helmets. ;)
I remember being about 5 or 6 in the early '70's. Most of us had Big Wheels. But there was this one kid that lived in the neighborhood behind us who had Green Machine. It made our Big Wheels seem so....plain. LOL.
@ilovekars Either you don't know what a Big Wheel is or you don't know what a Green Machine is. Comparing one to the other is like comparing a 1987 Ford Taurus to an Enzo Ferrari.
Dude, you gotta take the golf flag off the thing. It's swaying the center of gravity thats why his tires are coming of the ground like that. Also, whats with huge cracks in your street? Do you live in some post-apocalyptic world where nomadic gangs of bikers maraud your town streets? If so, you better REALLY take that flag off that thing. j/k I know its just slurry seal or something.
Just passing a memory..My friend dared me to go down the highest hill in town (4 blocks down hill with 2 flat cross streets!) and being the daredevil i was i did it,By the time i got to the second street i was going so fast that the front wheel where the shaft went thru the center of the wheel it started to wear away the plastic(i could smell the plastic) went into a silly spin flipped over ripped off my shirt and gave me massive roadrash!! I made some firends that day and scared a few away LOL
My first time seeing one in my entire life was in Toys R Us yesterday and they are on sale for $79. I was going to buy a bike but I just have to have one! They go up to 180lbs now!
At 2:25 it seems that the little girl has been doin some pretty mad skids. Needs a mini spool or somethin though. Only got 1 wheel going. Good job to her though!
I always thought that these were cool..even in the 70's...but they need to make them out of aluminum, stick a Briggs and Stratton on them and let em fly!!
I wish that I would have saved mine. The Big Wheel has nothing on the Green Machine. Kids today don"t know about all the fun my generation had with it. We would do 360's all day long.....what fun memories!
@soul111smasher I think you might be pushing it. If you watch to the end of the video when I'm riding it, you can see I'm using pretty much all the room that exists and I'm 5'9". I think you *could* ride it, but your knees would be bent pretty high. Also note: I think it's rated to 170 - 180 pounds. I don't know whether that would apply to you or not.
@TheHiltnerds Ah ok, thanks. Haha yeah thats me out, I'm not a skinny guy. Not fat, just got broad shoulders and solid build. I'm thinking huffy slider now anyway, seen some guys on youtube doing some pretty serious stuff downhill stuff with those. Thanks again
ive has a go on one very similar they are sooooo hard to ride properly and turn gentally so bad than i trashed the bike part of the store i was working in :) as i knocked over a stall
@theddrmaster yeah i remember i had one but it was different it had handelbars instead of joysticks but it was green and made by huffy and said green machine JR. on it.
I'm now gonna get a green machine for my kids. When I have them. They'll be the....I don't wanna say coolest, but it'll be fun to watch them power slide like maniacs.
@COD4Mixer Get it now! I bought mine and just kept it in storage for almost 5 years until my son was old enough to ride it. If there are no more Green Machines by the time you have kids, you'll regret it.
I split mine into 2 pieces. lol And They are right you never, ever ride a GM with a helmet. Getting hurt was half the fun. Biggest hill you can find and get ya big cousin to push you = near death expierence! Man those were the days! lol
@tonythetemplar Trust me, I didn't buy this exclusively for my children. I never had one when I was a kid, so I used my children to relive my own childhood.
i used to have one of those when i was a kid... 26 years ago!! it looks the same, but it seems they've made a few adjustments to the design. i would love to buy myself a new one...
Hey i was wondering how much they are, because someone i know said he got his for £10. But i looked around and the prices were ranging from £100 - £200.
Oh sure, some look at it and go "Geez, just get a go-cart or something". These came out when every kid in the neighborhood had Hotwheel trikes. Then, here comes you pulling up to your friends in a comparitively pimped-out speed ride with a hinged frame and skidsteer controls (meaning turning didn't bury your feet under your pedals) a powerbrake, and a tiltback seating setup that gave you a lot more leg room to power-pedal. You won every race hands-down as well as being winner in show.
Where were you in the 70s when getting a Green Machine on your birthday guaranteed a trip to the emergency room to get your concussion treated within 24 hours? At least, that's how it was in my neighborhood.
And now that I'm the one paying the health care deductibles....
My son was out on his Green Machine every day when he first got it. Now it sits unused in the shed. They are great fun until the novelty wears off.

@mooby235 -- I know what you're saying. I was the kid in the 1970s who only got to envy the one kid in the neighborhood who had one.
When they reissued them in the 2000s, I knew my children would not live without one.

Perhaps, but I don't let my kids drive a minivan in this way...

y was it only about to tip on that 1 kid only

Two reasons: First, it takes a while to get used to the turning for some people.
Second, in some of the video, the back wheels were over-tightened to the frame which tends to make it tip more than make it slide.

Its un-American to wear a helmet with a Green Machine!!! Lose the helmet, build a ramp and try to get airborne!!
wdawson2 2 years ago
Where were you in the 70s when getting a Green Machine on your birthday guaranteed a trip to the emergency room to get your concussion treated within 24 hours? At least, that's how it was in my neighborhood.
And now that I'm the one paying the health care deductibles....

Why are the kids wearing helmets when YOU drive the green machine without one???

Because they are much smarter than I am.
