I often wished Tammi would have been on this track, but it wasn't to be. Ashford & Simpson had a way with a song and turned out to be a strong songwriting team. R.I.P., Nick.
Yes, the song was written for Martha but she never recorded it until she went to California around 1970 I guess it was to record the first Vandellas on MoWest with the Corporation producing and Ashford and Simpson. What little that was recorded ended up on the magnificent "Black Magic" album. I love what Marvin did with this song and loved how Martha reworked it along with "I Want You Back" at the same time. So much great music from Motown!
this is interesting: in the liner notes to the LIVE WIRE boxed set Martha Reeves said that Ashford & Simpson wrote this for her. Her version came out in 1972, but Marvin's was 4 years earlier...
My parents have the original album and I loved this song. Even though it was recorded way before my time, Marvin Gaye had some awesome hits and this was one of them
First time I heard it on "In the Groove" thought I was going to faint. The man was a genius and this was classic Motown production at its height. The song was reworked for Martha Reeves for what was supposed to be the Vandellas' debut album on the MoWest label. Never finished but the tracks were used on "Black Magic," a terrific album done in Detroit.

As much as I love Marvin I'm afraid that Martha's version rules.
