  • It's Sonata for Cello and Continuo no.3 in G Minor. Found it on iTunes eventually ;)

  • but they don't come back even when they are still living :(

    moving on now,,,, :))

  • @Anescox - the credits say Sonata No 3 for Cello (viol de Gamba) & Piano

2nd movement Brandenberg Concerto No. 3 1st Movement Sarabande keyboard concerto No 7? Andante J.S.Bach and someone else whose name i can't read

  • @GrissomLovesSara Thanks for helping out with the music! I hope @xAnescox finds what she's looking for. :-)

  • @MichelleH I hope so too. I absolutely go crazy looking for songs. Before the internet it was damn near an obsession to try to find a song and one time I searched over 15 years for what turned out to be Flower of Sweet Strebane by Paddy Reilly. 15 years only to find it in a jukebox. Nowadays the internet and sharing the question with other people can give a result pretty quickly but not always with classical stuff. I hope this helps her!

  • @MichelleH watch?v=-CtN8UjCIGA&feature=related this is what I searched for so long. I love Paddy's voice and song is amazing. I wound up meeting him at a concert and I asked for a kiss and he gave me one. I tell you, when you meet someone whose talent you truly admire it's so wonderful. I'll never forget it. Another time his security team was stinkeyeing me but I was only standing there LOL they are protective which made me realize he must have serious fans

  • This movie was by no means a comedy; if anything it was a heart-wrenching tear-jerker.. SPOILERS AHEAD; but by the time she's ready to let Jamie go back to being dead and she's ready to move on with her new love WE are still stuck madly in love with Jamie with his magic stache, feathered Hair, that sweet smile , those knowing eyes and deft cello playing finger. I felt gutted at the end when he left. I never wanted to see him go cause I'm in love with him now thank you very much

  • I saw this film, almost exactly a year after my father died. I came across it quite by accident. I watched the scene in which Jamie came back, and I howled. I had never seen such raw grief expressed in such a hyper real, compassionate manner as Juliet Stevenson accomplished in that scene. I have since discovered that this film is recommended by grief counsellors. I am not at all surprised. Almost twenty years later, I would commit any criminal act to gain a reunion, even for ten minutes.

  • @embojitsu Yes, after all these years watching my DVD of this movie I still sob at that reunion scene. This film was written with Juliet Stevenson in mind, and I can't imagine anyone playing this moment better. I understand that it was done in one take, as well as the equally moving scene in the psychiatrist's office when she breaks down completely, swinging between rage and pain and anger. She's a remarkable actor.

  • Thank you so much for posting this, even though I bought the movie, because I love this clip so much. Yes, I love the window part and the singing/playing/dancing part because they're fun and spirited. And the sad part on the back steps about Alice's playground. But the very best part is where Jamie says he blames the government and irritably snaps that he still attends meetings although he's dead. We need more committed citizens like him. Loves me some Jamie. And I love Alan, TMD.

  • Made the year my first husband died.......................I love this beautiful love story..

  • It's a perfect scene - catching all the false hope of a true loss, yet still managing to convey that the truly lucky people are those who truly love, or truly loved, somebody.

  • I just showed found this to show my boyfriend . I didn't want to forget and I wanted him to see this lovely film. I was thinking about letting go last night and thought of this movie. I hadn't seen it for awhile and this happened to be the scene. This is the most raw, real, and profound expression unspeakable grief . I just started sobbing when I was playing it. My precious, beautiful son took his life three years ago and this portrayal of deep sorrow ...not even words to convey

  • Alan Rickman fans, don't you just wish you could be juliet stevenson for these scenes and just exchange banter and frolic with him? *sighhhh

  • Truly Madly Deeply - one of the very few movies I wept watching.

It started with this Cello Piano scene and I didn't stop until the movie finished.

    Thanks for posting.

  • i just cry and cry till i can't see the screen. the music is enchanting.

    rip my sweet dad

  • Wonderful moments from the first part of this movie! Thank you so much for uploading these clips!!

  • Such...incredible acting. She weeps like someone who has just gotten back her love from death. Awkward, choppy, restrained release, yet totally encompassing, too. It's the rare American actrss who can even come close to that same level.

  • such a sad but good movie. has been a long time since I have seen it. sh someone would upload the whole movie on youtube.

  • What a splendid movie. Ever so much better than "Ghost". Rickman and Stephenson are just perfect.

  • first part of this film..ive posted

  • @SuperColin74: Great! Thank you for letting us know! :-)

  • It's not a patch on Randall & Hopkik.

  • great movie! how come nobody uploaded yet the entire movie yet?! were are u all the Rickma's fan :-)

what is the piece they are playing at 0:50 and on??

  • ill be uploading all of it soon..

  • oh please do!!!!! this is one of my all time favs!

  • i wil do soon

  • ive uploaded 3 parts already

  • I only like him as Snape!! :D

And when he plays Col.Brandon .. he would be sexii here if he shaved that mustache!

  • i love him even more with his hair...i really like to play it with my finger the way juliet stevenson did in one scene...

  • I love it! But that terrible mustache!

  • totally LOVE this movie! And love Alen Rickman!! He's like the wine!

  • Sometimes I think we overdo it: Snape is'nt the only role Rickman ever played, he acted so many great and touching roles beside serverus in HP!

  • Is it OK if I admit that I love this version of the song and I hate the original one??? :p

At least here they sing as if they meant it. Brilliant actors, both of them

  • i could upload the film, but its gonna be TERRIBLE quality

  • i tried to upload teh entire film..but the sound was out of syn with film aghh

  • I LOVE YOU ALAN RICKMAN

  • I cry my eyes out when at the beginning & end of this film. Every time I watch it. Maybe should stop watching it? Nah. Never happen.

  • I think so too. I need to cry when she is crying about the bereavement of her lifelove! Oh!

The movie is so emotional. Wow!

  • if you have never been in love,,,, you now know what its like. pain. pain. pain. the most wonderful pain in the world. to love is to live. hold on to hope. no matter what. love will find a way. the sun will shine. the moon will fade. love will find a way into our lives again. come back. come back. my arms are open. my body is here. my soul is yours. i am waiting. i will wait. i will long for you. forever. to hold you once more. to love once more.

  • his voice is soo .....I love him!! :-), michael maloney too..! I love both! nice movie!!

  • The back porch scene! Lovely! Thank you! :))

  • Does anyone know where to get the sheet music for the piano part? Cello part as well If possible... :)

  • hey its professor snape

  • i love this movie!

  • I never seen this movie!! I must see it!!!

  • Heartbreaking. just hope it never happens.

  • I love this part of the movie!!

  • The don't leave, don't leave gets me EVERY time

  • a question: does HE really play the cello ?

or is he just moving it with a playback ?

  • I don't think so...I read he learned a few basic chords for the part but an arm double was used for most of it.

  • just a question, if the little girl who is 3 that Alan talks about, how is she in kindergarden(usually your 5 aren't you)?

  • From Wikipedia: "In most countries kindergarten is part of the preschool system. In parts of the United States, Canada and Australia kindergarten is the word used to describe the first year of compulsory education. In British English, nursery or playgroup is the usual term for preschool education, and kindergarten is rarely used, except in the context of special approaches to education. Children usually attend kindergarten any time between the ages of two and six depending on the local custom."

  • ah, I guess that makes sense then, thanks Michelle. Luv your clip here by the way ;-)

  • Love it

  • love this scene, nice to see i'm not alone (i know it's slushy)

  • When I first saw this movie, I bought the entire book and music of Bach's Sonata in G minor for Cello and learned the Allegro (this bit). It was the only bit I could play in the whole book, but it was worth it. This is my favourite scene!

  • thank you so much for this clip.. i love this film and soundtrack

  • alan looks so cute when he looks out the window with her

  • Forgive me

    If you are not living

    If you, beloved, my love,

    If you have died

All the leaves will fall on my breast

It will rain on my soul all night, all day

My feet will want to march to where you are sleeping

But I shall go on living

Its films like this, that makes us stronger.

  • You are so right. The film makes it so clear that one cannot go on living with ghosts forever.

  • I saw this movie the night my husband died and the piano scene guts me to this day. I have wished for that a million times, so many times that each time I turn and see just an empty space, if I could will my heart to stop. I would. Derek Beck July 08 1975 - Sept 23 1994. I miss him I MISS HIM I MISS HIM!!

  • oh my gnah alan's shadow against the sun makes it so romantic

  • i cant help crying when she crys in the doctors office. it's hearkbreaking.

  • God I love this scene/film. And the actors. <3

  • I read somewhere that Minghella got the idea when he was working on a muppet show about myths, so he came up with the idea of a love so deep that it overcame death. Good old muppets eh?

  • Juliet Stevenson is the best on screen sobber I have ever had the pleasure of viewing.

You should see her scene in the shrinks office: "I MISS HIM I MISS HIM I MISS HIM!!!!!!!"

  • i love this film =)

  • Juliet Stevenson made me a cup of tea one night when I delivered a script to her and had to wait for a signature outside in the pouring rain for an hour beofre she got home! A beautiful and talented lady. Also delivered a script to Michael Palin on the same night. Anybody who lives in London will know W1 Couriers based in Cale Road N1. I was always picking up stuff in Soho and delivering around town. Beautiful scene, beautifully filmed and superb acting from Alan & Juliet

  • does ANYONE know the name of the piece of music they are playing??? please help

  • I believe it's Adagio from the Viola da Gamba Sonata BWV 1029 by J.S. Bach.

Try this link (without the spaces obviously): youtube. com/watch?v=5yFwSY0r9n4

  • @MichelleH the last song when julia is going with mark and alan is in the window with the other ghost .. do u know the name.. i ve searching it for years. some say is beethoven but i dont know. sorry for the crappy english

  • @xAnescox Your English is fine, but I am afraid I cannot help you. I tried to search a little here and there, but with no result. Sorry! :(

I hope someone else will read your comment and might be able to help you. In the meantime, good luck with the search! :)

  • @xAnescox User GrissomLovesSara left this comment today:

"the credits say Sonata No 3 for Cello (viol de Gamba) & Piano

2nd movement Brandenberg Concerto No. 3 1st Movement Sarabande keyboard concerto No 7? Andante J.S.Bach and someone else whose name i can't read"

Maybe you will find the music you are looking for in that piece? Good luck! :-)

  • @xAnescox Enter keyboard concerto no. 7 andante into the YouTube search...and it should be the second video!

  • @Shmeetee te amo. thank you. you make so happy.

  • @xAnescox i think the music you mean is: Bach violin concerto in A minor 2nd movement; andante

  • Or is it JS Bach's Air on a G string?

  • The first scene in this video always makes me cry. She's such a fantastic actress

  • This was the first film I went to see with my partner when we first met 17 years ago so, apart from the fact that it's brilliant, it's also personally very special to me

  • Best movie of all times!

  • I have been looking for this movie everywhere! But I guess it's out of print. Any ideas where I can find it?

  • ebay

  • I think if anyone has lost some one so close that you loved, you must cry don't hold back...

  • I have been watching this clip for a few weeks now. Finally found the strength to write a comment.Cry everytime but then laugh, so thats good:)

  • The truth is indelibly stamped into every frame of this movie. The scene where we, as the audience, actually see Jamie for the first time is an actor's dream come true. He says nothing, he barely moves and yet his presence completely dominates the shot. We can barely wait for the camera to finish it's swivel because we so badly want to see what Nina sees. Nina's reaction expresses everything we are feeling. It is a magnificent scene performed by gifted actors, from a gifted director.

  • That had me in floods!

  • I think of this scene if anyone mentions this film.Alan Rickman what a great actor! Anthony Minghella gone to soon!

  • This movie is so beautiful, and I absolutely love the song in the beginning. When Alan pretended to play it on the cello, I actually cried. This movie in total made me bawl like a baby around 4 times. It's just unreal... this movie portrays loss of a loved one so fantastically. I'm able empathize with Juliets character when she cries her heart out over the loss of Jamie. This movie is the best!

  • So let me get this strait... she lives with a ghost?...a ghost that's fully material and talking and behaving like a human? And it's supposed to be real or is she imagining things? How does it end?

  • He drives her crazy, smothering her, needing her, to force her to move on with her life because she can't cling to him or his memory and have a full life.

  • Ok thanks I wtahced the beginning and loved it=)

  • sparrow, just rent the movie

  • This is soooo hard to watch.

I saw this movie years ago and I cried.

Juliet is absolutely wonderful in this film.

The scene where she goes to see her therapist and totally falls apart: her portreyal of the grief and the anger over her loss is one of the best performances ever in moving pictures.

    Absolutely natural and deeply touching.

Immensely well written, directed and performed.

  • The emotion of Juliet Stevenson is world shaking. I can never watch this without crying my eyes out. She is a force of nature. Thank you J Stevenson.

  • Without doubt one of the most moving scenes in a movie I've seen. Acted perfectly. There is nothing like the pain and grief of losing someone so close, so suddenly. This is beautifully portrayed by Juliette Stevenson.... A beautiful yet happy movie..

  • tarda mucho en aparecer la cancion :S WTF..??

  • I think your internet connection must be a little slow or maybe there's a temporary problem with YouTube.

I don't think it's the video, because it works just fine for me.

(I hope you understand my English, because my Spanish is a lot worse. ;))

  • in what minute (aparece) la cancion..?? =S

  • Oh! Now I get the question! :D

Around 8:15, almost near the end.

  • I don't think I've ever cried in the first three minutes of watching a clip. This is really beautiful ^.^

  • I love this film so much. And Alan Rickman has a lovely singing voice. <3

  • Truly , this is the thinking person's GHOST .

Rickman and Stevenson are wonderful together ,and it's a pity we see so little of her on film(but how lucky for those going to British theatre),and Michael Maloney(brilliant in MIDWINTERS TALE)is indeed magical as her living suitor. I wish Minghella had stayed with small films. However ,he and his casts aim for intelligent audiences ,which is rarer now with his passing.

  • yeah, no kidding...and ghost is an idiot's "truly". laughing...sorry woopie...I like ya but. This really was one of the best films of all time.

  • This film blew me away when I saw it, bbrilliantly acted, scripted, lit. One of my all time favourites.

  • mine too. nice to know I'm not alone. this clip showed beaty in scenes I didn't originally even like that much. Well, now i know where the music comes from. When she first sees him though...that's hard to direct, that has to come from the acting.

  • same here it helps me so much yes i am i have his spirit with me always hope you ok to ...

  • i so love this film i lost the love of my life a 1 year & half ago he was my best friend the movie is how i feel. So moving ..........

  • I also lost my beautiful young man - who was a musician - and this movie was what helped me grieve. I hope you're doing ok..Cheers..

  • Thanks for posting this video, it brings back happy memories as I was involved in helping on set and met Anthony Minghella, it was a very special experience, he was such a talented, gentle man who had no side to him and brought out the best in everybody and appreciated the efforts from everyone involved in the making of this beautiful film, which if I'm not mistaken was his debut film! What a great loss to the film industry. What a legacy he left us though!

  • This is up there as my favourite movie ever, along with Brief Encounter, and now very close behind is Alan's brilliant Snowcake. How beautifully sad this movie is. Best line ever is when he is sitting on back door step while she hanging out washing - 'I blame the Government', what an amazingly English quip!

  • I love this movie, it is so great.

  • Alan Rickman's the only man I know of who can make a phrase like 'My mother does not have not a beard.' sound so cool! I love his accent!!! I really want to see this movie now!

  • thank you for this beautiful post. Anthony Minghella R.I.P.

  • Thankyou for missing me ..... how wonderful

  • Querido Anthony, gracias por la más bella película directa a mi corazón. Dondequiera que estés espero que seas muy feliz.

  • Go in peace, Anthony. One of the best ever evocations of love & loss committed to screen.

  • A truly beautiful, tragic, and joyful movie. I both cried and laughed; and felt that I learned a needed lesson in loving, losing, and letting go.

  • one of the most brilliant and haunting films ever. RIP Anthony, you will be missed.

  • One Most hauting memeryable thing i have ever seen! Thankyou Anthony loved ur Vision Sure Miss The Magic u could created.

  • I love this film!!

  • I still think this was Minghella's best film. In fact I think it's my favourite film period. The only film that can make me cry and then laugh through the tears. Thankyou for that, Anthony.

  • Anthony Minghella, R.I.P. He was a great film-maker. Ar dheis laimh De go rabh a anam.

  • co to ma być ? :)

  • Częście filmu (?!) :)

  • I bought a copy of this film a couple of months ago from amazon for about $25 dollars and that was shipped to Australia. Great movie, even better when they are a reccomendation

  • You can also get it on ebay. I don't think Juliet is overacting at all. Wouldn't you react this way if the love you lost came back? The more I watch this the more I think he came back to help her move on. To help her realize what she thought was so wonderful about their life together really wasn't and allows her to let him go.

  • Where can i find this movie? I've searched everywhere!! On Amizon it said it was like... $77! This is frustrating.

  • i bought it off amazon but i had to get the VHS but it was only 6 bucks.

  • I love this movie! Just love it.

I came upon it quite by accident years ago in a rental place, got it, watched it, cried my eyes out. Her grief is so palpable. But I still watched it over and again.

And I just ADORE Alan Rickman!

  • who DOESN'T love Alan, lol!

  • I would be happy to be Alan's left hand anytime... I would love to put my arm under his armpit....

  • I watched it agian and her performance is so overdone. I really want to see this. It looks awesome but I have a feeling her over-acting might kill it for me.

  • Not overacting. Proper acting.

  • Oh my he sings good in this. Oh I want to see this movie so bad. I wish he didn't have the facial hair though

  • I like the facial hair on him, he can wicked pull it off.

  • I would prefer him to lose it. OR a beard to go with the moustache.. an all-or-nothing kinda situation!

At least if they'd trimmed it a bit more off his upper lip.. But then again, this IS Alan Rickman & he CAN pull it off LOL

  • Wait- can I verify something? Can Alan play the cello? So, it was actually him playing the first couple minutes of the film? I remember seeing a picture of him playing the cello in victorian clothes, but I wasn't sure if he could actually play. Thanks!

  • For simplicity's sake (or perhaps just because I'm incredibly lazy) I've copied berberry85's answer to that question:

"Courtesy of imdbdotcom: Had cello lessons for his part in Truly Madly Deeply (1990), and while he handles the right (bowing) hand, the left hand is provided by a real cellist standing behind him with his arm through Alan Rickman's armpit."

  • Thank you! It's a shame- I really thought Alan Rickman is the type of guy to play the cello splendidly. Oh well! This Bach piece is absolutely tantalizing. It's gorgeous, and it evokes so much feeling! The beginning first few moments really showed a lot of brilliant acting. Wow.

  • full body goose bumps for the first clip, thankyou!!

  • aaww...i want to see this movieee!!! hehehehe from this clip you think that julia stevenson's character is INSANE xDDDD in a "i'm-in-love" way xD

  • I still cry when I see it. (sniff!) ;))

    Thanks for adding it!

  • arg I want to see that movie!

"There are these plaques on the sides of the swing, bottom of the horse: 'From Alice's mom and dad. In Memory of Alice, who used to play here'. And of course, Alice goes back there all the time. And when you see the parents take their child from the swing, and see the sign... They hold on to their son and daughter, so tightly, clinging on for dear life." This lines always bring tears into my eyes... the way he says it and everything... *sigh* Such a great actor...

  • good god. he is the prettiest thing i have ever seen. i really truly, madly, deeply, deliciously....juicily love him. ;)

  • He's has such a melodic voice

  • OH. MY. GOD. He's a sexy bastard AND he can sing and play the... chello? That's a chello, right? XD

  • Pronounced "chello"; usually spelled "cello." Look it up on wikipedia or something :)

  • courtesy of imdbdotcom "Had cello lessons for his part in Truly Madly Deeply (1990), and while he handles the right (bowing) hand, the left hand is provided by a real cellist standing behind him with his arm through Alan Rickman's armpit."

  • iv never seen this film but i love alan rickman so im wondering weather i should go and see it...is it any good?

  • I'm a fellow Rickman fan. I saw this film and I am glad I did.

If you're a true Rickmaniac you should definitely try to get a hold of it. The singing part alone is already worth the effort. :)

  • OH MY GOSH!!! i saw this film and it made me cry sooo much! :( so moving -a brilliant movie!!!

  • This great clip makes me want to see the movie even more Truly Madly Deeply!

  • One of my fave movies. Thanks so much for the brilliant clip x William

  • An astonishing movie. So true in its premise, without going all sappy on you. I saw an interview with Michael Ondaatje, who wrote and directed this -- and later won an Academy Award for "The English Patient" -- where he said this was still his favorite movie.

  • I think you've got your movies and directors a little mixed up.

'Truly Madly Deeply' was written and directed by Anthony Minghella, not Michael Ondaatje (though I haven't got a clue if he did or did not say this was his favourite movie). :-)

  • Love this movie.............

  • To think Alan Rickman's job was to come back long enough to annoy his Lady to the point she found someone else! I couldn't find this on DVD so bought a VHS copy mostly for their "Sun ain't gonna shine anymore" duet... It's a great film and a chance to see Alan Rickman play a good guy...

  • THis is such a great film.....

  • magic - it´s true, it´s mad and it touches my heart deeply..

  • I remember seeing the part where they sing when I was really small and apparently I used to call them silly, but I totally adore this whole sequence now. It always reduces me to a blubbering mess.

  • I haven't seen this for over twenty years but it still has the same effect on me as it did then. I lost my hubby Allan & truly wushed for this but you can see you must let go & live. wonderful!

  • I just adore this movie so much. Thanks for the clip!

  • Truly Madly Deeply was filmed opposite my old house and this scene breaks my heart. it is everything that a widow/er fruitlessly longs for...

  • This is the moving scene in cinema history because it captures that thing that cannot ever be...

  • Yes for want of better words this move is an all time must see. It rocks. Its just such a neat concept, heart rendering and simply outstanding.

  • it's a cello, actually.

  • THIS MOVIE! I don't know why more people haven't seen it and don't know about it. It's excellent, honest and inspiring! Wow. :)

  • this is great. one of my favourite alan movies. & i've seen quite a few. :D

  • Awwwww this was so cute. I have to see this movie!
