George Washington was like all other colonials of the time in the 13 colonies, he was a subject of the British crown. Not a citizen of anything, but an idea which is in the Declaration of Independence. His grandfather was the immigrant. Washington himself was an invention, as was everyone else in the colonies. That is one reason the idea of America was so and is so appealing. Anyone can come here and be anything. The state does not define who we are or our existence.
