What's amazing is that the Japanese are sooooo much cleaner than the Chinese, even though they evolved out of the same Asiatic peoples of thousands of years ago. Japan was sooo much cleaner than what I saw in China.

@JAVMAN83 obviously two very different cases. Japan boomed economically right after WWII, while China stalled for a few decades under the rule of Mao Zedong. China has been catching up only over the last 30 years, and at an astonishing rate. Visit the home of a middle-class Chinese family and you'll find it no dirtier than a Japanese toilet.

That's great to hear. I was in the Guangzhou area 5 times during 2008-2009 and ran into the non-Western toilets everywhere I went except where Western company personnel were visiting regularly. I realize that with as many people as China has, it takes awhile to transition to any new form of change.

@JAVMAN83 Been to China a few times myself, and it's true that public bathrooms, even in large cities, are a problem for us Westerners! But yeah, I don't think a disregard for cleanliness is a problem with the Chinese culture, but merely an economic problem, which is being overcome. Cheers.

White visitors to China are directed to proper, Western style bathrooms that local folks are forbidden to know of. Shameful.

@guthywoodry these are the toilets used by the poor people in the rural areas. They don't have many things we're used to have. I don't think they even have pipe water. Certainly no schools either. Japan is clearner coz Japan is so much smaller. It's quite obvious.
