  • wow awesome.... fully respect for UP for maintaining such locos

  • I love hearing that locomotive!

  • most amazing video of a steam loco i've ever seen...it must have been very intimidating to see that behemoth charge at that speed, and nice job on filming it.

  • Great video. Man he's movin'...lol

  • I read on Wikipedia that this beautiful beast is safely rated to run 120 m.p.h, so why doesn't Union Pacific go for the record and steal it away from the Brits and their Mallard which suffered severe damage to hit 125? Bring the steam record back to the United States!

  • My guess would be the rails are not meant for that kind of speed.

  • @TommyboyGTP, you can't bring the steam speed record "back" to the US. You never had it. Mallard took it from the Germans. While UP has fast track, I doubt it's legal for more than 80mph today. The Britis have all-new track good for 180mph, the French for 240mph east of Paris. Even with a fast engine, without that kind of fast track Americans can't do it.

  • @flare40x The US has track that's good for 150, up in the Northeast Corridor. They're also upgrading other areas, like in the Pacific Northwest. I'd wager that an FEF like 844 would be able to make it over 125. The frame is still rated for 120, and the drivers could be re-balanced. Also, the US did have some of the speed records, so we would in fact be able to "bring it back". The Empire State Express #999 took the award in 1893, Milwaukee Road #6402 in 1934, and Milwaukee Road #2 in 1935.

  • Spectacular close up zoom & great panoramic pacing, all rolled into one!

  • Hey - were you by any chance driving a white Ford Focus for this trip? If you were, I have some pictures that you may want to see.... Great video!!!!

  • What a wonderful video! I've spent many days pacing trains in the Lodgepole area and have a lot of great memories - the UP's telephone poles are 132 feet apart - 1 per second is 90 mph -about 3 minutes into this video 844 is approaching this speed - 80+ it seems - I wonder if the engineer caught a little hell for this joyride - if he did he probably thought it was worth it!

  • Nice video! I love the close-ups too! I can tell you really have talent! Keep it up!

  • Nice close ups near the end.

  • Great Video of some real History

  • Any idea how much coal it burns per hour?

  • No Coal al all, sorry but it can burn upto 10 gallons of #5 fuel oil & go thru 100 gallons of water per mile

  • Doesn't she burn oil?

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't a Big Boy burn enough coal in a hour to heat a house a whole winter.

  • 5*****

  • Beautiful!

  • Great video! I love the zooming!!! Do by any chance have any video or photos from after the crew change at Sydney?

  • thats debateable, just trying to keep it in the frame

  • skip....YOU ARE THE MAN !

    this stuff is GREAT !

  • that train can do a 100 mph

  • up said this train would go over 130mph up had no length of track to test its true speed i would not be shocked if it could go ove 150

  • Very hard core!

  • simply beautiful, wish i could ride in the cab of that old girl

  • I sat in school missing this. Makes me cry. lol

  • Buen video emociona el sonido de una gran maquina

saludos desde rio ceballos cordoba argentina
