My compliments to the builder! He did such an excellent job on the model that the flight characteristics resembled a full-scale Navy F-8, especially on downwind and (unfortunately) after the engine lost power on final.
The standard procedure for flameout (on approach) for the F-8 (like most navy fighters) was to get squared away to EJECT! The reason? Best glide for the Crusader was about 220 KIAS! Approach speeds were 135-150 KIAS. Power loss on final made the pilot a passenger.
The F8 was a dream on a cat shot because the attitude at launch was nearly the same as at the point of flight. One didn't have to rotate like the A4, F4 and most other carrier jets.
But landing was a different matter. The F8 was the most difficult to bring aboard because it had virtually no vertical thrust component. Adding or reducing power only affected airspeed, as opposed to the cocked up A4 or F4 whose vertical thrust component offered more precise control.
It took off ok with the wing lifted so it should land ok with the wing lifted.Comparing take off and landing it looked as if the airspeed was to low on landing and the wing stalled. This plane needs to be flown in.Its not a floater.I think the plane is perfect and just needs some getting use to.Excellent craftmanship by the way!
Gorgeous plane, excellent craftmanship!Would like to give my opinion as to why it crashed, but i'm stumped.Possibly not enough elevator when wing is pitched?Hope you work the bugs out.Would be nice to see something other than F-18s,16s and 15s and F4s.Beautiful plane!
as it sounded to me it wasn't as much the throtle but more like the engine died..i've heard engines die like that. 60% of the times it was fuel problem...pity beautiful plane
Such a beautiful aircraft the F-8, my heart sank into my stomach when I saw it pitching down, and it broke when it crashed. Love this bird, and it got me all choked up when it went down. My condolences.
You certainly did a beautiful job on the model. I hated to see it go down. My late brother, Bill Mead, flew F-8's in VMF-122 and VMF-235. He's watching from on high and we're both waiting for number 2 to get airborne. Well done!
Very sorry to see all the hardwork crash like that - what happened? Looked like a hurried approach, too steep and it's all over very quicky. Best of luck with the next one and keep an eye on that glide slope - nice and shallow and unhurried.
hate to see such a nice model go in on its maiden. i heard the comment "its pitching down on me" i can only imagine the pitching moment that wing is going to have as it is "extended" to its landing configuration. Not sure it was extended for landing or not, but i would assume so, as it looked like a very gradual pitching down movement. Possibly to much movement in the wing caused a pitching moment the elevators couldn't overcome. Come on with #2 i'm ready! and good luck
There was two issues. The engine started loosing power soon after takeoff due to ( most likely) inlet failure, also for the first flight I was flying with a C/G more forward than normal couple that with power loss and .........problems.
I was an F8 plane captain in the Navy in the sixties..watching these videos I can almost feel the heat and smell the "coal oil" burnin..Please post more when you get her fixed..awesome...thanks
That made me cringe when the ground came up and hit it. Do the wing and flaps deploy synchronously or independent? Are they controlled manually or automated based on airspeed and/or AOA?
Kenny Fondon
Will you be posting a flight schedule for the new model on your website? I'd like to get out and see it.
I've been following this from the F-8 Crusader Association website, very cool!! Awesome work, it looks just right. Too bad to see the crash, but glad that all is not lost.
The inlet is two part. The forward part in question was destroyed. The aft section can be used again. The new inlet is carbon and very strong. Thanks, David
sorry about the mishap. i am glad you have the molds. it was put fwd on rcu that the long intake may have imploded. but from the footage it looks intact.
is there a way to simulate in flight pressures on the ground? maybe high-speed taxi tests?
Gorgeous looking plane, great job. Sorry to see the crash but glad to hear you have a 2nd one in the works. F-8's rock, my Dad flew one back in 66-68 with VC-2 out of Oceana, thanks for sharing the video of your hard work!
Beautiful model, David. I've been following this for a long time. It looked Sierra Hotel in the air! Sorry about the crunch but glad to hear you're well on the way with a second. Cole Pierce, VF-211, '66-'69.
The highs and the lows all in one flight!

Great crash!
I don't know who that sound made near the end, but it was hilarious, it sounded like "aaargh".

That's really bad luck - best of luck with the next one and try and keep that glide slope approach shallow and unhurried!

approx. what was the dry and take off weights? and type of powerplant?
andrew0962 4 years ago
Dry weight approx.45lbs and the take-off weight approx. 52lbs. The engine is a Merlin
Mark II and produces 36 lbs of thrust.
dcmodels 4 years ago
Looks like the guy was behind the power on landing. You can hear the turbine spool up during the final approach.
