  • taking atlease one home economics course is mandatory in alot of the schools ive seen up here in Canada

  • I'm a professional homemaker and I believe that this country does not value homemaking as a legitimate career and that's a shame. I encourage all young men and women to return to a more traditional and conservative life. I too homeschool my children as others that have posted stated because the school system does not embrace a traditional life, but rather forwards an agenda that supports the minority. As a society we're so busy moving 'forward' that we've forgotten our traditions.

  • im 26 years old. i had home economics as teen. i really didnt want to, but im glad i did, they taught us how to cook easy, quick meals, write a check, budget, make basic curtains, it became a class i was happy to go to because i could see myself using those skills. i had no idea that it was not taught in public schools any more. i would teach it for free, because i think that is that important!

  • our home ec was lacking badly, and that was the early 90s! i dont think my school even teaches it anymore

  • This film was pretty progressive for the 50s. I liked that they showed boys in the classes. The teacher also talking about girls in college, having a career and possibly NOT getting married was bold for the time.

I took home economics in middle school and high school and loved it. It really did teach valuable skills, no matter what you ended up doing in life. Too bad most schools don't teach it anymore. :(

  • Most women have outside jobs now. They don't have the time for this sort of thing...I guess it's good for a stay at home mom, if she's really got the energy.

  • wow this video is astounding. I never thought that much about home ec, or thought it could give such detail.. JUST the details where I have no idea in my own home. I love this video too b/c it shows just how much a college-educated woman can contribute to the home AS WELL AS to the workplace. You use the same skills. I mean if you are willing to actually -WORK- at home, like the Bible says women should be home managers.

  • I wish they had still taught this when I went through school

  • How encouraging it is to read these comments! I thought I was the only woman on the planet who hasn't bought into the silly feminist philosophy, or the only woman who still desires to cook, clean, and love and nurture her family.

  • Home economics is an essential. Anyone who thinks it is not important to have as a mandatory class is ignorant of their nation's need regarding survival. A society that depends upon premade foods goes hungry when the infrastructure collapses. Girls who learned homemaking from their mothers have more confidence in their ability to please their husbands. To some, the honor is to please their husbands rather than to chase them away with poisionous words of "why don't you do it yourself".

  • im so going be like the old 1940-1950s wife. I feel that my soul responsibility is to raise my husband and children. Im a good cook and know how to clean well, I think that some women today are kinda lazy. There is a difference between cooking and cleaning than cooking and cleaning WELL. I took 4 years of cooking class. It was helpful. I learned how to cook, nutrition, and how to plan a meal for a whole family. My mom was a housewife and I think she did a good job. I wanna be a housewife too.

  • This is good stuff. . THis stuff is what the NEED to learn, and the schools not only DONT teach it anymore, but they tell girls who want to learn it that they are wasting their time. Thats why im homeschooling

  • I agree! I am 29 and was never taught any of that stuff. And now I so wish I had been. I am not saying that is all a woman needs to know, but it should at least be taught. I think this causes many problems in marriage today. Women still do the majority of the housework and cooking.. yet were never taught the proper way. How is that an improvement?

  • Homemaking is a skill sadly lacking in women today. I have been a homemaker 26 years and have found fulfillment in being a wife, raising my children, and keeping my home. I'll probably draw rude comments but that's ok. There is peace and order in my home. :)

  • piperspal, thank you very much for your comments!

  • Your very welcome. Thanks for a good video :D

  • I've been doing it for 15 years(my whole married life)and at the same time, I've taught my kids how to prepare food and do laundry and make their own lunches. I wanted them to learn from a pro!

  • And your kids are probably grateful for your service(as other stay at home moms are!). Hang in there, sister!!

  • @piperspal it is sadly lacking in ALL OF US. i agree.

  • @piperspal I remember taking Home Ec in jr high (I'm 29 now) ... I actually enjoyed that class. I actually miss being a homemaker. I really do.

  • With the economy in shambles, it would be

of benefit to everyone to be as self-sufficient as possible. KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!

  • Well said, kimmijo. Well said. :)

  • Ever see the BBC programs How Clean is Your House? & You Are What You Eat? They feature brave people willing to show how they live- in chaotic filthy cluttered firetraps, preparing food in kitchens teeming with bacteria & many of them have children in that squalor! In the 2nd program, they show terrible eating habits. Simple fruits & vegs are alien to them. These souls simply have no idea the benefits of cleanliness or nutrition. Home Ec teaches those STILL NECESSARY skills and disciplines.

  • that's a good show, can't believe how some

    people live.

  • I am a homemaker, and I have a hard time cleaning, cooking, with the kids etc. Took me a couple years just to get my home managable. We have 1 car, cook from scratch etc. and its hard with no one to explain what to do.

  • I really wish my high school would've had home ec. I feel like I am so unprepared for family life, seriously so. i don't know how to do most things for the home. My parents are busy, it would have been better to learn some of this stuff in school.

  • biblegirl, thank you very much for your excellent comments!

  • Sadly, home economic classes are being eradicated from public high school. They're being replaced by other electives and academic classes. That's a catch-22 since everyone needs to know how to make a meal for one or two, how to balance a checkbook, how to plan a menu on a budget and etc. I learned this in high school over 20 years ago and it helped me a lot(I love being a stay at home wife and mother). Believe it or not, learning home economics is great for everyday living in and outside the home.

  • All I learned in home economics was how to cook eggs, talk at a dinner party, and fold a fancy napkin. And I was forced into the class. If people want to learn home ec. they should do it on their own time.

  • How will they learn and who will teach them to do it, kid? If their own mothers work or live in a single parent home, who will have the time to teach it?

  • I didn't have a mother teaching me all that stuff and frankly I don't believe it's our role. Men know how to cook their own dinners now and do their own laundry. All the home ec stuff I learned was out of my own experience, plus looking up recipes online. By the way, just because you may be older does not give you the right to call me kid. I'm well past being a minor.

  • Whatever floats your boat, tiny. However, learning how to cook, clean, and wash takes time to learn on your own. Having someone around with experience helps.

  • You see little importance in what we do, like it's a silly past-time. A housewife does more than fold fancy napkins. If she does her job well then she contributes more good to the world than anything she could by working. There is nothing more important than nurturing souls & raising decent human beings to adulthood. Home Ec helps develop the skills she'll need to better manage her home - THE most important place there is! There is no more fulfilling role than mine & God made it that way.

  • @biblegirl I completely agree. I don't know what I'm doing EITHER! It's so frustrating, my parents didn't teach me a thing and still aren't. I took home ec but they didn't teach very much.. a lot of goofing off and some cooking. that's about it!

  • That is the world I live in still and it is a very very good, clean, healthy and wise world indeed.

Feminism is wretchid, we need to realize that these ways are actually the best ways of all.

  • I wish the world was still like this. It makes so much more sense to be prepared for home life, not just a career. The world would be a better place.

  • not many schools in the UK teach this anymore, it is seen as a highly outdated and sexist subject.

  • That's really stupid of the UK school system. Learning chores at home is a basic building block on how to do tasks in the real world. It's part of life training and maintenance for when you get your own home. The US school system discontinued home ec, too. So it's a dumb thing around the world!

  • Times sure have changed hasn't it? I wish I learned all these skills before I got married.
