  • Thanks for the comment "tobasco". The original VHS was much longer. I cut it short for the youtube. Some boats were stuck in the Albion bay also because the tide was too low to get up the river. One had his mooring clete ripped out of his bow. Then he used the engine to keep heading into the seas. Watching from the beach the whole boat would disappear in the troughs. It was the same storm as I remember.

  • I was there & watched this from the bluff. If I remember right they had been staying out to sea, waiting for a chance to come in for quite some time. The captain finally felt he had to go for it.

  • crazy son of a bitch

  • Lucky!!

  • Surprisingly it seems the engines did not die. I think the skipper was very lucky although.. Cheers Wave

  • could she turn and back in

  • MANNNN PROPS GO TO THE CAPT FOR STAYING WITH THE BOAT AND GETTING IT IN THERE.....A ROOKIE MIGHT HAVE KILLED EVERY1

  • Did they capsize later on

  • @Mario228l Although I wasn't there, I'm sure he didn't. Those old Montereys have a heavy keel and once in the harbor, even listing from water in the bilge, they probably stopped at a fuel station around the bend and got it pumped out. If they had been swamped at sea it might have been a different story. Are there any old salts out there that know?

  • Now that's what I call arriving in style!

  • Damn that was close!

  • a great video. whens the sequel out? can't wait!

  • Spread the word, maybe we can find out who shot this film so we can give her credit. Sukoshy (pronounced "Skoshy") It's Japanese for "Little Bit".

  • I think I was there at same spot taking photos! Nov. 1987.

  • "Nice" days at Noyo aren't much better than that!!

  • Wow..I remember this! I wasn't down in Noyo at the time, but was nearby. I think we watched this from the bridge! It was pretty intense.....November 1987....what a year for storms, eh?

  • Very amazing footage let alone the event itself. Me thinks he was bucking a maximum ebb tide so couldn't quite make way against the current. These old boats very rarely make over 6-7 knots to the water. So if you have 5-6 knot opposing current.

  • Wow...

  • easy way in?

  • why not upgrade the engine? waste of time on travelling and risk everyone's life in bad weather.

  • Holy Cow !!!! I got a slow, old wooden Beals lobster boat, work a tough inlet in the north east and had my fair share of hairy passages. This captain must know his boat and inlet like the back of his hand, got the feeling he's been there and done that.

  • that guy's got a good yarn for the boys down at the pub.

  • what was the name of the boat anyone know because i have seen a boat up the river that looks alot like it

  • They surfed in alright! On their gunnel! Damn, that boat is somekinda slow! I hate coming in the cut during bad seas, get me all puckered up!

  • Why wouldn't they wait for the storm to pass? That's foolhardy.

  • I fish out of Newport,Oregon on the F/V Evolution and this is what we fear most. Coming home is the most dangerous point of a trip. Even if you dont know anyone who braves the ocean, plz keep your prayers with us so we can continue to bring you the bounty of the sea

  • u should she the eureka bar fucking breaks 24/7 i went south this year worst mistake of my life and there was no crab second pick was 1-2 a pot

  • @avitis I will be going out for the first time in April in the Norh Atlantic, so im alittle afraid but you guys are awsome for the jobs you do...be safe!!!

  • we used to go leave a river to go to sea ,also had a bar to cross ,i lost friends ,those guys are so lucky .

  • well there you have it thats how you bring a boat in holy shit my pants water

  • didn`t capsize but it was close. She should have stood off to sea if she couldn`t beat the waves in.

  • The dictionary says capsize means "Upset". Because of a heavy keel it would have stayed in that position til it filled with water and then sunk straight up. That's the position divers find sunken ocean liners in also. Single hulled sailboats will also right themselves and stay afloat if the cabin is sealed.

  • Actually the term for what that boat did is 'broach' not capsize.

  • uh at which part in the video does the vessel capsize? he takes on a shit load of water, but I sure didn't see it capsize.

  • Excellent! sukoshy. That is a very exciting video. I think watching this got my adrenalin going for the whole day!

    thanks,

    jeanna

  • fucking nuts im a crabber out of newport oregon i had same thing happen at night i left finger indents on and under the galley table crossing the bar is the worst part of winter here

  • I've seen some hairy stuff on the sea but that one tops them all.

  • Yeah, that old fishing boat just couldn't go fast enough to surf that wave. I don't know who shot this but somebody gave me a copy a few years back.

  • Lucky, lucky, lucky batsrads :p
