I wish I was a DJ just so I could play this at 3 in the morning and scare the HELL out of somebody who's half asleep and not expecting this. Listeners used to nice, safe, nonthreatening corp rock need to get a shock every now and then. Music is NOT background noise. If you got a rock station on, ROCK, dammit!
@MrKirkenstein The first half is that yo dont understand what im saying now, the second half is neither do you know what an "earschplittenloudenboomer" is. I'm Norwegian and have never learned German, still I understand it directly. Germanic language, like English.
I was 11, I'd play this in my basement. My dad was going to throw away our stereo. It was a huge...with a TV in it, a stereo turntable, and giant speaker. He bought it from Sears back in 1960. The speaker would woof and crack when turned up. For this song, (when nobody was in the house) at the giant 'boom' at the end, I'd bury the volume knob to 10. The after rumbles of the initial ""crash"" completely blew the speaker! I loved the after-rumble. Max bass. Steppenwolf blew-up my Dad's stereo, LOL
Steppenwolf-one of greatest and unrecognised rock bands ever! They have sold more than 25 million albums, have dozens of millions of views but only about 10000 fans on Facebook.Try to correct it atleast by liking them! Here are the names of their pages (type or paste this words into facebook search tool):Steppenwolf, John Kay, John Kay and Steppenwolf, John Kay & Steppenwolf Should Be In The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.Thumbs up so everyone can see!Invite your friends too!John would be grateful!
I remember listening to this song at my best friend's house. My step father was always telling me to turn that damn jungle music down. Randy's parents seemed a little "cooler" to me.
@twtrout1 I'm a mobile dj myself and I play this song at weddings as after dinner music before the dance starts. I have someone every dance ask me who it is. Some older dudes usually just look at me and give me the thumbs up. They know!
Funk meets lounge meets psychotic psychedelia. I am delighted somebody decided to put this up. Good ending, too. Been DJing this song for years. One day they will understand....
i had atyourbirthday party when it was new, dug all the antiwar jams on it, though i didnt know what war was, this one confused me being Herb Alpertish, therefore i didnt like it- although i had several Herb Alpert albums i did listen to over and over along with atyourbirthday party, , didnt know it was about an atomic bomb, thanks for the song- its all very good
My Dad was just very hard-nosed,and set in his ways-from the "Old School".In those days, there was a lot of fear and resentment-from a LOT of people toward the "Hippie Culture".....this kind of music represented something he didn't understand.....
@bopar1856 ps if you want to hear some oldies that have been totally forgotten, search the Boxer by Simon and Garfunkel it was on their Bridge over troubled water album.A real classic
@mcarman150 granpa who fought in nam is like that so is my dad.. with the hair anyways, but i have long hair anyways and i havent spoken to either of them for years.
@outlawcountryman Its honestly tough to call the old folks out on their belief system... I mean the shit those old birds went through in WW1 & WW2 whether they were kids losing their parents, soldiers on the front line at Normandy, or whatever it is that shaped the "hard ass mentality" Now my Grandpa Korean war vet used to beat the old man for smoking n shit.. hehe fortunately the pops isn't like that too me :) I do honestly feel bad for the old heads, esp over the weed part
i remember when i was 5 my mother bought at your birthday party. up to that point ( 1970) they were the freakiest lookin group i had seen. never heard 7 untill i was 25. im 45 now and its my favorite....thanks for posting. i havent heard it in years
Today I have good news and I have bad news. The first half will not understand what I've said right now, and the other half still doesn't know what an "ear splitting loud boom" is.
We meet again, El Groover! I was looking for the track "Tuanta", which has some great raw harmonica work. Found this instead, expected to hear some //els with the topical blues number "Thank Christ for the Bomb".
As for the German, Joachim Krauledatz, aka John Kay, hails from Memel when it was German (and my old Dad from Danzig, by the way).
Never heard this before, but I'm never disappointed with Steppenwolf. Cheers.
Stpnwlf Live was my very first album . Later bought this and For Ladies Only. WTF was up with the car on the inside of FLO ??? Pretty heavy stuff for a kid under 10
LOVE this song-takes me back to my early teens...had to sneak to listen to this music...my Dad was very hard-nosed,and this was some of that "#%&*#$!!!LONG-HAIRED HIPPIE music."......anyone remember that part of the 70's....???Despite my Dad's butthole attitude,I still listened to Steppenwolf a LOT,and they're still one of my favorite groups....thanks for the post!!
OMG yes!! I "remember that part of the 70's" alright!!! I quite liked the single 'Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town' by Kenny Rogers and The First Edition, and in a pathetic attempt to appease my worried parents, bought the album! It was the first LP I ever bought, cost me about 19/-. Didn't take long before I showed my true colours, the next album I bought was 'Watt' by Ten Years After and then soon after that, 'The Yes Album' lol..;-j
@IrishPrincess141 Hi-and Thanks for the comment! Yes-LP's being played among people in your age group IS unusual, for sure-but,nothing wrong with it,at all...Glad that you like Steppenwolf....!
@bopar1856 LOL I had the same DAD.I love him tho and miss him.He was a greaser and said that music was going to warp my mind and I needed a hair cut LOL
@bopar1856 exactly the same situation, the prick got himself crushed by a drunk in a 3/4 ton ford in 75,in Canada ya know the guy got charged with drunk driving and got a 250 dollar fine, times have changed huh?Music is such a powerful way to take you back.I can't say that Britney or bieber will have the same effect
@bopar1856 For a minute there I thought I had written this and forgotten about writing it! My dad was the same, he actually broke my Jimi Hendrix album over his knee. It was my fault, I was playing it on his Hi-Fi and I had cranked it really loud, so when he turned it on ... well, you get the picture. I love Steppenwolf, always have and always will. I particularly love this track. None of the grown ups could complain about the lyrics on this one!!
I saw steppenwolf in 1994 at a small club in california and after the show i had my Monster lp sign ed by John Kay saying '' arthur good luck with your rock opera John kay'' and also gave me a big bear hug. he's the man and i hope to see him again. I see he is still doing a few shows
to hugohabichtle ~ You're welcome Hugo ☺ Steppenwolf are one of my (many) favourite bands as well. I know what "Earschplittenloudenboomer" means. It describes the sound of an atomic bomb detonation. I don't believe it is a real word. I think it's been made up as a kind of pastiche, an imitation and mockery that is making fun of the great length of some German words. It equates with "Ear-splitting loud boom" ;-j
