@3masons1 The safety inspection was actually the responsibility of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, not the U.S gov. It was operated by a Swiss company under contract to a British oil firm. Most of the work was also outsourced to private companies, making quality control difficult. Even worse, they had two people in charge at one time on the rig. One was the drilling manager, the other the rig captain. And we're pissed because of BP's incompetence, not because they're British.

@repeated911 well pressure tests showed an imbalance between the drill pipe choke and kill lines running from the drill deck to the blowout preventer BP said it might have been a "fundamental mistake" to continue with the procedure because there was an "indication of a very large abnormality.

@TheCorruptA If this spill had happened in whatever hovel taught you not to use punctuation, you'd probably be complaining too. BP used dispersants made by a joint venture company to save money. This dispersant was more toxic, and less effective than alternatives. They refused to allow the measuring of the rate of flow saying it would only hinder progress. They banned the use of hair booms, favoring synthetic booms that are made by BP. They only care about their bottom line, not results.

Their response hasn't been too bad (i.e. biggest environmental disaster response in history, no limit to clean-up and compensation costs, paying out all claims within 48 hours, tens of thousands of people employed to clean up, including paying locals to help with the response). The main fault of BP is using contractors to drill the oil for them in the first place. Contractors who have much less of a regard to safety and cut corners.

according to one report i read, it said they had about 7 different safety and environmental violations prior to the spill. So why were they allowed new contracts in the first place? I think we really need to re-evaluate wether the potetntial profit is even worth it if you can't even breath the air or drink the water. This is also the same guy that was quoted in an interview as saying " the ocean is huge, so the spill in comparison to the size of the gulf isn't that bad at all".

@3masons1 The safety inspection was actually the responsibility of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, not the U.S gov. It was operated by a Swiss company under contract to a British oil firm. Most of the work was also outsourced to private companies, making quality control difficult. Even worse, they had two people in charge at one time on the rig. One was the drilling manager, the other the rig captain. And we're pissed because of BP's incompetence, not because they're British.

@repeated911 well pressure tests showed an imbalance between the drill pipe choke and kill lines running from the drill deck to the blowout preventer BP said it might have been a "fundamental mistake" to continue with the procedure because there was an "indication of a very large abnormality.
BP IGNORED warning signs. They were in charge of the oil platform.

seeing as BP is already a convicted felon, and had ignored MANY safety regulations to speed up the drilling by a DAY despite advice to the contrary, I would say the fault lies squarely on BP, NOT Americans.

@TheCorruptA If this spill had happened in whatever hovel taught you not to use punctuation, you'd probably be complaining too. BP used dispersants made by a joint venture company to save money. This dispersant was more toxic, and less effective than alternatives. They refused to allow the measuring of the rate of flow saying it would only hinder progress. They banned the use of hair booms, favoring synthetic booms that are made by BP. They only care about their bottom line, not results.

Their response hasn't been too bad (i.e. biggest environmental disaster response in history, no limit to clean-up and compensation costs, paying out all claims within 48 hours, tens of thousands of people employed to clean up, including paying locals to help with the response). The main fault of BP is using contractors to drill the oil for them in the first place. Contractors who have much less of a regard to safety and cut corners.

Wow, isn't BP's CEO Tony Hayward just a frigging Saint! You know, it wasn't the employees of BP rather the CEOs and upper Management who are responsible for this mess. Haste not only can make money, but look at the waste it has inflicted on our environment. An absolute travesty.
In the end, it WILL cost the taxpayers if not through taxes then as consumers. I hardly think the upper echelon will forfeit their salaries/bonus' to cover expenses.

Plus, they're paying out ALL claims, all within 48 hours.....This stuff doesn't get reported in the media, the media want to focus on the negatives of the situation, and they never tell us the whole situation....

according to one report i read, it said they had about 7 different safety and environmental violations prior to the spill. So why were they allowed new contracts in the first place? I think we really need to re-evaluate wether the potetntial profit is even worth it if you can't even breath the air or drink the water. This is also the same guy that was quoted in an interview as saying " the ocean is huge, so the spill in comparison to the size of the gulf isn't that bad at all".
