I hate to admit that I really like this song, such a sweet little keyboard riff, and just nice keys in general. THE 80's were a beautiful time in so many ways! OK so the video is kind of silly, so what, so am I.
@vinstrumentals Its not silly man (or m'am..?) IMHO what appears to be silly is there to support the cartoon-like world re-creation. Some shots there are well thought of, like the last one where the mike wire connects the viewer to a fading band, the stop motion bits, the "silly" dwarfy bald bass player that often is the only (apparently) randomly travelling element...
I picked this song for the theme of my junior prom. I remember thinking very highly of myself at the time . . . like I was a real cutting edge bad-ass. HA!
I love this song.It brings back good memories and other good songs to my mind, but why Is it so hard to see the damsel's face on the video, and other videos of this same song.
@franchua100 fran when I think abvouthe mid 80's i think about how intereactive everyone was around me. no cell phones (at least in the people I knew) video game arcades mixed with discos was all the rage, everything, at least in my little world at the time was clean.
I liked ABC's music. I still think it's awesome. That said, and they're from sheffield - so it may just be a homage and not a rip-off - but this video is leaning HEAVILY on Cabaret Voltaire's Sensoria video in which they do the cam "flipping" or whatever that is. orbiting. and the stop motion movement. See it. It's serious, though, not candy-arse. lol Love you, ABC.
how to kill a band: ok, abc, you had a great debut album, but the followup did poorly, so for your third album, we are going to add two non-performing individuals to your group: a pin-up girl and a japanese midget, and we will turn you into cartoons of your former selves.. we think this will boost sales. are you on board?
@laura20022004 And a great deal of those guys today sing with that nasal snarly voice that gives the same feeling as the scratching of a chalkboard and with no variety in style music. Thank the Lord for indie.
Brings me back to a specific Friday night in early October 1985. I was sixteen and my gf was fifteen. Her parents thought I left but she let me back in when they went to bed just to lie on the couch and snuggle. We watched MTV til the early am to see punk and new wave videos. I think that night I was wearing a Smiths t-shirt and she had Billy Idol posters on her bedroom wall. What a night. What a year!
The band used a cartoon theme for most of the album "How To Be A Zillionaire"(1985)- including cartoon images of themselves. I think for this video they decided to portray themselves as having entered the "real" world from their cartoon world(crazy, right?).
@Wiser72 Yup, In their Song "How to be a millionaire" (Remix 12" version), the band members introduce themselves... My name is Martin Fry...F-R-Y.... I'm David Yarittu, I may be tiny, but I'm Strong... Hi, I'm Eden....Kiss my "snatch"...

Nunca alejarse demasiado. Y no desaparecen , No, no desaparecen.
@fatograph - well, welcome to the mid-1980's. Focus on the lyrics and not the people in the video; two of whom were simply hired talent. The message IS perfectly simple and it's meaning IS clear.
@hdwhit75 They hired more freaky people? For what reason. After watching this video again, this is worse than terrible. Although, I wish I had a jacket that made that noise when I moved my arms like that. The girl is cutem but the rest of this cast should be sent back to Planet Freakazoid.
I was only 16 so I was thinking with the wrong head. Her dad was a mafioso!!! My God, we were so young and had the world by the balls. What a great song and year.
I think "Mafia Princess" was a made for TV movie..do they even have those today?
While this was playing on MTV, I remember kissing and trying to get my teenage girlfriend naked on her mom's sofa, late on a specific Saturday night in September 1985. Her mom went to visit her dad in prison so we had the night to ourselves. He was in the mob and was a few years into a long prison sentence. We had just finished watching "Mafia Princess" staring Susan Lucci. We joked how she was a mafia princess. Sad but true.
"How To Be A Zillionaire"(1985) was really a great concept album by ABC. The band even had cartoon images of themselves(including temporary fill-in's David Yaritu & Fiona("Eden") Russel-Powell) done, for both the album art and some videos of tracks from the disc("(How To Be) A Milionaire"). I really think ABC should have kept little man Yaritu & Russel-Powell, and just continued a good thing while it lasted.
This is one WILD video, the haircuts, the outfits, everything! The band ABC should have kept it going through out the 90's; they would have been in The Hall Of Fame by now. Great job, Guys!
FYI" David Yarritu (little bald guy) & Fiona("Eden") Russel-Powell(blond girl), were hired by ABC for their unconvential looks on-stage & in videos. In Yarritu's case, it was his short stature, shaven head, oversized glasses and diminutive build. He was the lone American in the group. Today Yarritu works as a freelance photographer and is based in New York City. Both Yarritu and Russell-Powell had small spoken parts on some tracks from "How To Be a Zillionaire"
I think this was the best "incarnation" of ABC ("How To Be A Zillionaire" album, '85). The extra members, David(little bald guy) & Eden), really added visual interest to their videos and live concerts of the time. Check out the video "Vanity Kills"!
What times they were! We weren't in the messes we're in now in the 21st century. Here's to 1980's music. Hell even the 90's were good! Everything changed after September 11, 2001. This was 25 years ago.
@masterwork39 Not that there wasn't anything good immediately following Black Tuesday. It's just that now we're stuck with one rotting carcass after another.
I really like the style of this video....it still *looks* like a modern video (aside from the obvious 80's styles). Keep it simple and it you keep it timeless.
ABC should have changed their name to "AB" for this album, because only two permanent band members are left at this point, lead singer Martin Fry and multi-instrumentalist/backing singer Mark White.
I think this is one of the coolest visually interesting videos, and certainly, was most likely one of the best when they made it for sure!! The song is absolutely their best!
This track is sooooo pop smooth. It really is testament to ABC. The fact they dared to try many different approaches.. They really were (and still are) lovers of pop and are always open to and not scared of change......Sweet sweet music..AMEN
@Ooothoseeyes I know ABC wasn't punk. I was punk at the time too, complete with a mohawk and a dirty, stinky flannel (which was a lot for the small town I lived in) but I was referring to the button on Fiona's hat. It says, "Punks Are Cool."
@GoinCreekin Ahhh.... A person after my own heart! :o) You were truly a cool one. Sorry about my mistake there. I didn't notice the button~ *welp*~ :o/
Back then, my mom loved their song "When Smoky Sings" off the same album. Martin is such a dreamy singer... Heard being interviewed by Steve Jones (of Sex Pistols fame) on the radio in recent years here in LA, and was still awe-struck driving in my car. This song is pure pop genius and beauty. They don't sing songs like this anymore...
David Yarritu. ABC had added two non-playing members to enhance the look of the band. They're only featured on the album How To Be A Zillionaire. Martin Fry later described it as a big mistake.
I think this is a 1st class dance/pop song and a brave and imaginative video. It is also one of my many favourite ABC songs. In fact, I never tire of listening to this song and I am happy that America took this song to its heart. ABC rule!
@chevgr: yes, it did get USA radio station airplay, on what they called the "new Wave" radio stations, or what some wags called the "Wanna-be British" radio stations.
Very nice group! I would love to get back of that time ! nice time, Good memories

I heard this on the radio the other day and almost lost it!!!! Love this song!!! ABC was the s**t!!!!

Who is that midget anyways?
forty8r 1 year ago
@forty8r

ABC rule!
VanityKillsABC 2 years ago 5
@VanityKillsABC was this a hit in american?
chevgr 1 year ago
@chevgr: yes, it did get USA radio station airplay, on what they called the "new Wave" radio stations, or what some wags called the "Wanna-be British" radio stations.
