I'm British and i feel US hoods are worse; but at the same time, the hoods in US are the only dangerous place. You can walk through suburbs of England and get stripped down and stabbed. In America you can avoid trouble if you want, in England you don't have that luxury because it's bad everywhere.
you can argue all day about which hoods are grimiest, at the end of the day as a country as a whole, UK is much more dangerous... And the crime rates will tell you this.
