  • First aplication electronic drums Simmons SDSV :-)

  • i can't believe no one has done re mix of this!! the ultimate getting ready to go out record.... awesome

  • Thirteen people have their pressure on...

  • Sounds more like a Talking Heads tune than SB

  • "There's a lion in my arse"?

  • @Tracypuk and he goes on to sing 'there's a motion in my arse'????!!

  • what a great song.not very well known but definetly one of their best

  • this song is very different from the others of spandau . in sense it's funk

  • great song

  • to think that barely 6 months earlier, TONE was preening on TOTP, with a tartan outfit, his hand on his hip, and a pudding-bowl haircut.

  • does anyone notice the influence of this song in the music of early LCD sound system or the band !!! ?

  • @petemanthrills

Yes on the LCD Sound System. You aren't mad :)

  • awesome tune

  • This is one of the few Spandau Ballet songs I actually like. Heard it on the radio the other day & couldn't believe it at the end when the guy said it was them!

  • ...how old is this song? I can't really tell?

  • TuneA

  • Best song they did apart from Gold. I am afraid I liked very little else this band did!

  • I think it's a shame that people remember them for song like True or Gold. Their music from the first years was so much better imo I just wished they had gone further with this kind of music. If you have this, why would you want to listen to "Through the barricades"? Even my mum liked that one (rolling eyes).

  • Great song and hasn't dated. Sounds as good today as it did then.

  • It was always the Simmons drum beat that did it for me with this song, just so good and I want a Simmons electronic drum kit! It is a good song though, always was, I've got the original 45 with an instrumental only on the 'B' Side!

  • You can see where some of the Jamiroquai sound got some of their influence, especially at 2:29, through the solo section and to the 3:14 mark.

    Sweet :-}

  • @g2racing1... Wow, you've just mentioned my fave band in the world. This is the first time I've ever heard someone put them in the same breath as Spandau! I can dig it.

  • God, this song is just SOOOO 80's.

ONE OF MY FAVES FROM THE SPANDAU'S.

Remember them performing this song on TOTP and the Kemp brothers were wearing kilts - VERY SEXY!!

  • ashes to ashes made me wanna buy a quattro and when i do this song is gonna be blasting out it !

  • One of thee best Jazz-Funk toons of the 80's!!

    DA-YUM!!

  • this is the tune i will be playing when i get my quattro !

  • so 80s -love it

  • i migliori Spandau non sembrano loro!

  • Why is there a picture of Lenin at 3:43 - 3:45 ?

  • @sethburgess1234 Arty symbolism Daahling !! Video was a new medium at that stage...artistic licence..."Spandau Ballet" "Lenin".....

  • lol one of my fav songs

  • Fire up the Quattro.

  • great tune!!

  • lo mejor de spandau ballet, ritmo fortisimo, muy bueno,,,

  • Love it !

  • @beepollen1 Some of them are too close, claimed by mom and become woman haters, serial killers, evere watched "Psycho" it happens ;-) Most serial killers have a oedipeus complex. So better not too close ;-)

  • Jam!

  • @beepollen1 That's not always true unfortunatly

  • @beepollen1 I think that is nice in a man to be so close to his mum. That to my mind makes a true gent

  • @beepollen1 Yes I know I do feel very lucky and he is the nicest person you could ever wish to meet. He has time for every 1 of his fans who wait outside for him. What a true gent he is

  • Even better in 2010!

  • @beepollen1 he sure is spot on. i have met him 3 times and he is a true gent

  • @beepollen1 Oh yes he sure is one gorgeous man i have loved him for many years and it was so nice to meet him 3 times what a gent he is

  • Lurve it :D

  • reminds me of ashes to ashes :D

  • mean bass line :D

  • Is it me or do all the video,s take forever to start ????

  • I still fancy Tony Hadley as much today as I did when Spandau were first together

  • fave SB song

  • great :)

  • First song to use electric drum set -- Simmons SDS-Vs -- with the iconic hexagonal drum pads

  • Another great band that used those Simmons sets was Talk Talk, listen to "Today" for a good song with them

  • Can't wait to see this live in April!!!!!

  • I'm with you.... Sandalford Winery is gonna JUMP!!!! I won't be in my allocated seating that's for sure!

  • I remember hearing about this song and always wondering what it was so thanks for posting and solving the mystery!!!! Wow, much different sound from "True"

  • this is so important

  • Ramirez!

    Get in the Quattro!

  • great song love the addition of brass section from begger and co

  • 3:11 - nice dance tony !! great song all round!!

  • Ashes To Ashes, GET IN THE QUATTRO

  • gary kemp must be worth a few quid

  • tune !!!!!!!

  • oh yes !!!!!!!!

  • IMO, The lads were right to take that hiatus. Most people who were sucessful in the 80s got royally chewed up by the 90s (Michael Jackson et al)

  • Great song. The boys are VERY SERIOUS!

  • when is ashes to ashes back on

  • june 2010

  • oh this vid is so sexy love all the versions of dis song x

  • Ross KEMP autobiography is a record of the eighties and it is excellent...

  • Ross!! You mean GARY Kemp.

  • ...Gary's indeed. It is a good read. There was a London scene I wished I had been around at the time.

  • Too bad Spandau Ballet didn't do a video of the song "Coffee Club".... verrry Jazzy.

Have to laugh at the beginning of this video. Only in the movies can you pull up with your car and park right in front of a night club !

  • Seen these last night in Liverpool,29th October 2009.They sound exactly the same as on their records! Still got the same energy too!.

  • All time classic funk record. Spandau can funk with the best.

  • They performed this song at the very first concert of their comeback tour in Dublin on Tue.night 13th Oct. They still sound as good now as they did back in the 80s.

  • I saw them at the 02 on 20th october, and your right they still sound superb!!

  • Seen them last nite (Wed 14th Oct ) in Belfast.... they were unbelivable....wen they played this song , true , gold , through the baricades and to cut a long story short the whole arena went mad...Great nite out....SB LEGENDS

  • Can't wait to see these guys tomorrow night(wed 14th Oct) in Belfast!! They were fantastic in the 80's!!!!!

  • It's hard to believe that a song as old as this could sound so good in 2009. Awesome.

  • @ponypower8 ....2009....2010....and beyond!

  • @ponypower8 its hard to believe its that that long ago...lol

  • @ponypower8

    old school classic

  • @ponypower8 They need to make stuff like this nowadays.

  • Totally forgot how brilliant this is.

  • Spandau's finest hour ... Friday Night, Beat Route indeed !

  • Tony was a fine looking six foot 4 inch tall man with a beautiful voice.

  • He still is.!!!

  • He still is

  • i dont this pressure ron lol

  • I love this song, but i never knew it was spandau ballet!

  • What happened to all of the British Soul Boys?

    This is classic.

  • wham came along and all credibility was lost ...

  • i dont need this pressure on...

  • Bought this day one- fabulous white funk!

  • brilliant !!!

  • Gahanesque!

  • Dave Gahan is legend in himself....no comparison to spandau needed.

  • I melt for this track. The whole "Diamond" album is my FAVOURITE Spandau Balelt album. Seriously a masterpiece of Dance, Funk, Creativity and no noncence RAW expression!

"Friday Night Beat Route"... OH YEAH, fabulous line +

"Journey's To Glory" is also a piece of brilliance, atmospheric dancefloor antics and charisma.

First 2 albums all the way for me, the more pop stuff later I like, but it doesen't compare to the first 2 albums. Though "I'll Fly For You" is just STUNNING beyond belief!

  • For sure, it is up there with The Reflex as one of the defining songs of the 1980s. Bloody brilliant!

  • It sure is bloody brilliant!!!

  • me too!

  • Love this video. One of the best examples why Russell Mulcahy is the best video director of the early MTV days.

  • ASHES TO ASHES TRAILER!!!!!!

  • @DMCDL

Way back in the day this was my favourite tune for shadow-boxing. Great tune!

  • Oh Tony...

  • spandau ballet.........gotta love em.............pretencious....over produced.........over achieved in a decade of money greed and big hair...........a blast from the Thatcher years..............good theatre.......'God bless em governor'

  • love this songg=)

  • best song!!! great choice for Ashes To Ashes!!! i LOVE that programme!!

  • Flipping brilliant song

  • thin black tie!! still pure class!!!!! ;)

  • So glad this song featured in the trailer for Ashes. This song is awesome, and Ashes to Ashes is just... There are so few words to describe how awesome that TV show is!

    <3 Gene!

  • When the did this track I recognised them to be the White London Soul Boys they were. Totally true to their roots with this sound but showed that they could still bang out the Commerical Stuff with quality too.

On a separate note does anyone know whether this was filmed in the 100 Club?

  • Ashes to Ashes is amazing!

  • Pumpin on the cassette in the Audi Quattro while doing a handbrake turn.

  • i LOVE THIS SONGG=)

  • You never hear this played and it is one of their finest songs ...funk on a stick..

  • lol awsome song......glad ive found the complete version of it.....ashes to ashes advert wasn't the full song on the advert...

  • fire up the quattro

  • The horn section is from Beggar & Co who did Chant No 2 as well with some of the Spandau Guys.

  • Audi Quattro

  • Was this song from 1982?

  • 1981 I think...

  • I thought they wore those New Romantic clothes in 1980-81?

  • You're probably right, they've moved onto the suit era by this point. Was this track off of Diamond?

  • Yes, this si indeed off "Diamond", before the horrid suits, hehe

  • I think this is 1982

  • Early 60's

  • it was the 80's

  • The only quality record they made - funky as f*ck (featuring the great 'Light of The World' on horns)

  • I'd agree with that... and yeah, it is fairly funky!

  • ashes to ashes used this song in the trailer to series 2

  • yeh thts a great programme though

  • My fave song of theirs! Now that I know more than 2 LOL

  • the 80`s are back and its criminal ,,,ashes to ashes

  • OMG WTF BBQ SAUCE! its awsome XD

  • I remember this song big time, its because I loved the group called LIGHT OF THE WORLD who are also from London, England. SPANDAU BALLET asked the group called LIGHT OF THE WORLD to do the Horn parts within this song. Light of the World had a huge underground following in London at the time if you followed Jazz Funk and Soul music at the time in the Uk.

  • ASHES TO ASHES

  • YEAH BABY

  • i love this song

  • Omg!! This band is amazing :O

  • Friday Night with Jonathan Ross!

  • Never heard of their music before that and they were pretty good!

  • listen to gold or true, you definitely will have heard before

  • Love this song and Ashes to ashes is awesome :D

  • Ashes to Ashes!

  • ashes to ashes

  • This was the first single from their 2nd album, "Diamond". Still pretty early in their career.

  • This was one of their first songs right?? It was really good, It went downhill in a big way from here on in.

  • Both Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes are great and I lived through both periods as a young boy/teenager. Life was good back then with great british groups ! Wish I had a time machine.......

  • Yh BBC and A2A have brought the whole spandau ballet collection 4 me!

I knew Gold (duh) but none of the others and now i do. LOVE IT

im 15 and this is an awsome song to sing on ur way into ur GCSE exams :P

  • i am the the same as rembrant1079.

Ashes to Ashes has relaunched this song

  • Excellent Instrumental / A precurser to rap if you will

  • Great song!

Roll on Ashes to Ashes S2!

  • hell yeahhh!

  • wow!great to hear this again.thanks

  • the 80's are back!

Wish I was alive back then. although I was born mid-late 80's.

Whenever I see the Ashes to Ashes trailer I think of the game Grand Theft Auto Vice City! XD

    Oh fuck yayah!

  • I thought vice city was set in the 70's?

  • 80's Hence all the 80's music lol!

  • I reckon loads of people have been looking these past couple days after seeing the advert but Google is hard to use if you type the wrong lyrics.

Love 80s music, all the way!!!

  • been looking for this song, since the advert for ashes to ashes

    i love it

  • they were good-up to True, then went really shite. Their early stuff is yet to be rediscovered-'age of blows' sounds like something Franz Ferdinand could only dream of!

  • Great song, great to have the Spands back again. Fire up the Quattro the 80s are back

  • Fantasic song!

Duran Duran not a patch on them.

But SB leave it in the past, don't reform, as you was part of the New Romantic era, which is not todays looks, ways or thinking.

  • remember hearing this and being devastated that SB had ditched the synths in favour of funk... But then it grew on me and I bought a copy anyway. Agree with Cazza0001, had practically forgotten about it till the ashes to ashes trailer!

  • Love this Spandau Ballet are amazing and the theme tune to the trailer to Ashes to Ashes series 2 can't wait to watch it 20th April come on

  • Interesting that an advert on TV can trigger memories of this great great track! Great track, defining the eighties, I'm there now with my ruffled shirt, drainpipes (with white stripe going down the side...), boots and back to front fringed scarf...sigh!!!!!
