We sang this piece when my school went to San Diego Heritage Festival Competition in 2008. It was one that I enjoyed singing. Federal Way High School Eagles :)
I haven't heard this sung in years, and this choir is doing a spectacular job. I agree that the quality of the men does not match the women, but they blended in very well and did a tasteful job with the quality they had.
Because our choir doesn't do that...and our hands would probably be too sweaty anyway. but seriously...the girls are and the guys aren't. What's with that?
@Mateja170 They are all holding hands, their director is likely a graduate from St Olaf, which has arguably the best college choir in the country. They hold hands so that they can be connected physically as well as through their music. My choir director showed us this video today, hope that helps!
What ever happened to the old Mrs. B? I miss my choir days! Is there any way I could plead with KLHS to add old choir videos from 2004?
I agree with ziegegeist, the wonderful thing about music is that its malleable and open to interpretation by all. You feel the music, let it flow through you. Especially when your voice is your instrument!
Have You ever heard the actual piece? No. Neither have I. Only the performance your director (and mine, respectively) chose to illustrate the way your particular group would sing it. Don't be so close minded. The wonderful thing about music is that it is malleable and open to interpretation, speaking to us all in different ways. Some interpretations are just more popular.
When we performed this last year, we were even slower than this. It took us about 8 minutes. Our director takes a lot of input from the choir as how we should do it.
you have to consider the director's right to interpretation. there's no way the emotional connection could have been that strong if it was "at least twice as fast"
For the person who asked about holding hands, one of the benefits of doing that is that you can feel when the person on either side of you breathes, and time your own breath breaks so you don't leave holes in the sound in the middle of long phrases.
And I agree with the other posts that this director was outstanding. This was not the easier arrangement of this song, and the performance was at collegiate level - well done all!
We worked so hard for this day lol, but i definitely think that it was all worth it. Dr. Heruth is absolutely amazing. and as for satBASS some of the tenors don't have as much much warmth because they are used to singing a Broadway style.
that was actually "Missylssie" who said the thing about the warmth of the men's sound, but I do somewhat agree.
I do have to say though, everyone has to change SOME sort of bad habit when singing choral music. Some have 2 get rid of RnB tone, some throat singing, some that grabbing Rock thing, etc. You cant say that Broadway should be an exception, you kno?
Either way its not like the guys didnt sound good, It was still a beautiful performance.
Wow. I can tell this is a well trained choir. Absolutely stunning. The tone flowed effortlessly throughout the piece. Nice contrasting dynamics too.
One thing: I would like the men in the group to match the warm quality of the women. It would enhance the sound and tone of the piece immensely. I have to say, you do have strong male singers, which is a rare find for high school.
AMAZING! The whole choir is really good and you all balance well. The sopranos though are really good, they reach the high notes without shreiking. Its a really pretty tone. Good job
wow! awesome. We did this song for a highschool competition and we went to state for everything. but i was wondering where your breath was on "oh cruel were his parents who sent my love to sea" we always struggled witht that. and i love your basses. (I'm a bass. haha) Great splits.
Ah man. Some great harmonies in here. Lovely sound :)

I played the band version of this back in high school... Whoever cares to take credit, this video is absolutely breathtaking. Bravo.

there are reasons behind the tempo.

Really and truely - that is an incredibly
difficult song - Cambridge, of course, with
Rutter at the helm - sings the HECK out of it.
A Story of a Life and a Love. A Story.
Good job! Again.

Congratulations - you are one of the few American Choirs that have a director who is NOT teaching you to sing mechanically!!!
( :
Good job.
(And Yes, we have a LONG way to go before we reach the standard of choral musicality of our Brittish cousins - A LONG WAY to go.)
And thank you to your director for NOT BEING AFRAID OF CHORAL V O L U M E. !!!
Thanks for teaching them how to sing at ALL
levels of dynamics.
