Okay, I'm sure it's like this with every accent, but it's so weird to me to think about what people from other countries have to do to mimic an American accent. You know, because I've lived here my whole life and to me, I don't hear any accent at all. I'm sure it's probably just like how Americans try to mimic British accents but it's still so strange to me.
Whenever a british person does an american accent, I always think "man, us americans have such a stupid accent!" Whenever an american dos a british accent, I think "man, them british are so fancy-shmancy. I hate that accent!" But whenever someone speaks their own accent, it just sounds normal. That is because one always exaggerates the other's accent.
@Brawn601 Heh, I guess this would be a bad time to say that I'm actually American... ^-^; But I'm not good at accents at all really. My British accent sounds like some stereotypical old butler. :/
Matt's accent sounds like a New Yorker or Chicago accent, while David's accent was more of a southern accent, probably because of that book he was reading.
I think its unfair to label all of our dialects as one american accent, but then again, we do seem to label all english accents into group as well.
gotta say in all honesty, Matt's American accent is better than David Tennant's. not that i don't love David, it's just his American accent sounds really southern
@hamnet99 So I've heard. Still, despite the similarly drastic variations among American voices, many still refer to a generic "American accent" when referring to any American dialect.
When he said cool, it didn't register that he'd already switched into American. I was busy fan-girl spazzing because Matt Smith just used the word "cool" in real life.
Plenty of foreigners can do a bang-on American accent because of the prominence of the American media in the rest of the world. Many grew up watching American movies/shows and listening to American music. On the other hand, Americans don't take in a lot of UK/foreign media, so they aren't as (properly) exposed to other accents.
And then there's Dick van Dyke's attrocious contribution to the American perception of the English accent XD
i watch as much British shows as i can and i can not even come close to faking a British accent..even with that explanation i am still baffled at how they can do an American Accent so well.
But you probably haven't been watching British shows from a very young age. I grew up on Aruba, where we get American cable, and while my natural accent is distinctly Caribbean, I can easily do a convincing American accent because I've been exposed to it all my life.
A more controversial theory is that a general American accent is easier to imitate than an English one, but I do not personally agree with that.
@EnigmaDrath He's defended himself by pointing out that his coach was Irish though. In total fairness, an Irish accent coach would still have notable exposure to an English accent, but still.
Oh he's very good, surprisingly. I didn't even think about it, I was just kind of listening until he starting speaking in a British accent again and I was like,"Oh...well played, very nice."
Hahahahahaah because I hate American accents? I don't think they sound appealing. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. So, you can piss off now. :) Go harass someone else via youtube comments. :) buh-bye.
I'm an American, more specifically a North American, more specifically a United States citizen, more specifically - well, you get my point.
