I'd like to come there this summer to run the Yellowknife Overland Marathon..other than airfare, is it an expensive trip? Is it worth it to take the bus from Edmonton? It looks like a very interesting city to visit!
Notice that everyone has satellite radios? I did some studying and found out that almost all of the radio stations in Yellowknife are owned by the CBC, some of them broadcasting in French.
@MIKON8ERISBACK I live in the States, and I like to listen to the CBC from Yellowknife on the internet. To me, there's something romantic about listening to the same thing as they are "way up there.'
@OttovonEarth He came there at a festival. And J rock came there to. I met him in my gym at school there and years later I met him again and he remebered me.
One thing that you obviously better not be, if living in northern Canada is homeless during the winter months. Even here in Detroit during the winter, there are some homeless who will commit a petty crime or two, in order to get jailed for several months and so receive three meals, shower, a bed, and warmth (and Bubba for a cellmate)..heh!!.
Lots more homeless than ever before here, and many will resort to squatting in foreclosed or abandoned homes that have no heat, water or electricity.
@scrm1 Hmm..nah they might prefer to remain stinky and just poop in an alley here, but would YOU let the homeless come to your house to shower and poop?
to drive on ice u need winter tires that grip the ice better , and you have to be gentle on the gas and brakes and steering, u get used to it, i drive like 90 mph on snowy and icy roads
Lived there from '92-95. Should've done my homework first. If you don't have a gov't job, forget it.
It wasn't the climate that got to me. It was the general bitchiness of the place, and creeping socialism. A welfare wasteland if there ever was one. Only God knows how many thousands of my tax dollars went down the urinals in the Gold Range.
I HATE YELLOWKNIFE! HOW DO YOU PEOPLE PUT UP WITH IT?
Naw, it happens sometimes. Just don't open the doors for more than a few seconds or it turns into a freaking fridge inside. I really wish I could go back, once you live there once it's like it's engraved in your soul or something deep like that haha!
I even had a yellow crayon once, when I was like 9-- then there is the "Big Bird" factor. Oh, and I saw a yellow cat down at the laundrymat-nut. Thinx~ But the "Green Giant", he's green... sorry I can't help on that one.

Oh no you don't. Overpriced, drunk and bitchy. A nest of drunks and socialist queers.
Avoid this mosquito infested shithole.
Try Whitehorse. MUCH more friendly. Prettier, too. You'll probably end up wanting to live there. Most people who try Yellowknife can't wait to get the hell out. Don't believe me? Ask around.
Have to say your correct man. Well in most points anyways. The drunk thing is PERFECTLY accurate. Drunk natives are the most annoying thing in the world. But I like it here cause of the longass sledding winters :) Also I alwaya wanted to try whitehorse. Hows the winter there and hows work for heavy equipment?
Hey just think about this, we don't have a provincial tax to pay. It may be expensive here for food and other things we cant get here. But it's a lot better priced than other provinces
The great thing about this? Even at 3PM in -24 (C?) degree temperatures, Yellowknifers go on their business at the supermarket like it were nothing.
As I type this, it is 80 degrees out with 90% humidity (yes, at 2 AM) Tampa, Florida summers are not nice! But, we do many of the same things! We just buy more cold foods and drink.
Goes 'up to' -40? Wait, that would suggest that it's 'coming' from lower temps, lol. Well I've never experienced -40 before...I think I've experienced -20, but it's quite rare, and I never know what is 'windchill' or air temp...but I know for SURE I've experienced -15 though! Brrr...
@Zorica12 The higher the wind, the more it strips the heat off you. So -40 with still air is one thing, -40 with a high wind can be lethal. The 'windchill' is the still-air temperature that would strip the heat as fast.
i could never live in a place that gets that cold and stays that way as long as it does there, BUT its very interesting and I would visit for the experience
Just watched the video and wanted to say ty for posting it. My husband is running the iceroads this winter and it was nice to see some of the area that he will be in.
i knew you were going to extra foods..cause you were turning. cause Usually people go to extra foods when there turning left..or the hospitol. but i guessed right. Gee that was just action packed!
