Eddie is too skilled to simply be a part of a band (a great band albeit), but it is hard to believe that at his age and a guitarist of his magnitude with his legacy has not once released a solo record. I think any die hard EVH fan would agree he should put a solo record out once, twice, or hell 10 times before he dies. Something in the insrumental rock category annd maybe a few guest vocalists. Rock on Eddie!!! Greatest guitarist ever.
I think most younger people have no comprehension how revolutionary this band was when they came out in 1978. You have to keep this in perspective. British invasion bands like The Who ,Stones, Kinks, etc. still dominated the radio. When Eddie came out with his shredding hammering classically inspired style he just blew peoples minds. Nobody played like that back then, Eddie was the first. Pretty much every metal guitar player since has imitated him. The rest of the band is great too.
To me, Hendrix and Eddie are the most important guitar men of history. They should be in any top list. The other guitar men can be, or not, in some list. It will depend on some personal taste. Eddie and Hendrix are the most original, inventive and influential in my way of analysing. It's not possible to talk about the best singers of ever without mentioning F. Mercury or R. Plant. The same is valid about guitar players and Eddie and Jimi.
@ricmgrande Hendrix/Eddie would fit that category for rock, but not for guitar as a whole. Also, Les Paul should be above Hendrix imo. The same goes for Plant and Mercury. The were great for their style. But, that's it. There are too many genres for people to be labled "the best" or even most innovative. Eddie and Hendrix didn't influence Jazz,Flemenco,Country,Bluegrass,Folk,or really even Blues for that matter. They influenced Hard Rock and Eddie influenced Metal to a point.
@ricmgrande dude don't forget theres a ton of other music styles and there are so many different innovators that no one is the BEST of everything, for example, john lennon and paul mcartney are innovators of rock, and that means all of rock. but i agree they are amazing and belong in that group of musical geniuses.
hes using the charvel star here before he painted it black u can hear the resemblance to the sound of it on those live bootlegs and other videos and so forth
there are far better guitarist in this world. i have played for a year now and in an hour and a half, learned to play this song by ear. Eddies good, but was only god in his time.
@pizzamovie you're such a bullshit artist. You didn't figure shit out by ear... there are many musicians better than Eddie, but there was only one Ed Van Halen, deal with it.
I hope you guys know that by considering guitarist better than other and constantly comparing artist to others then you are shutting yourself out from alot great of music. you will never hear a great guitarist say that one artist is better. And you know how those guitarist are so good? because they listen too everyone and use all of their techniques. The more modern the guitarist the more extensive the list of influences becomes. If everyone were still trying to copy hendrix we would be behind.
@IronMan360 Not really. They're just giving their opinion. For example, I like Eddie Van Halen and I like Kirk Hammett. I happen to think Eddie is a better overall guitarist. I'm giving my personal opinion. Does that mean Eddie is actually better? No. It's my opinion and that's all it is. Do I still like Kirk Hammett and tons of other guitarists and bands that I find worse the VH? Yes I do. When you compare guitarists and musicians you pay more attention to their music.
@zackvanhalen Yea opinions are what make us who we are are, but im saying that having the mindset of "this guy isnt as fast as van halen so im not going to listen to him" is horrible. Most of these people arent arguing like you are right here. I'm just saying dont get caught up in one guitarist as if he is god and cannot be touched. He wasnt born with this ability he had to practice just like everyone else.
All of the guitarists aforementioned are all good. But with that said nobody is the best. You can only be good at some things and not others, that's just how things work.
@atomicorangutan27 all these guitarists are different, its to hard to compare. but if your talking about revolutionizing guitar duan allman hasnt done anything, hendrix more then page, and eddie is higher i think. everyone copies eddie now. pullofs, harmonics, tapping, even using a tremelo, he popularized it and made it his own.
@chi91385yeah You know, normally I would just delete such a stupid fucking comment. But, I think in your case I'll leave it up and let the thumbs down fly.
Umm... Sorry but is Van halen., On live show he play this music on Electric guitar, maybe not all the time but many time... Second... Who the hell can do this like that ???, Just Van Halen for Sure... !
@chi91385yeah Dude, you must be really stupid, if you actully listened to Eddie Van Halen, you could tell his style just by a little peice of the music. But I really think your fucking retarded. So I will not cuss you out for being a complete fucking retard.

jimmy hendrix was good, but i'm just saying he could not play ANY van halen song, simply cause he didn't do alternate picking let alone speed picking, nor tapping or artificial harmonics or any other of that crazy stuff, what jimmy did was to introduce the "crazy guitar solos" and you know feeling and all that stuff, but technically he wasn't all that like ppl make him to be
eddy changed the face of hard rock guitar and is solely responsible for countless other imitaters from those other cheesy hair bands from the 80's....he's up there with hendrix, page ,clapton , beck..the first pioneers of hard rock guitar..
The world would suck so much more if Eddie was never born. Truly one of God's greatest gifts to humanity... Along with Mozart, DaVinci, Shakespeare, and a few others...
Man, this just proves the fact that Eddie is the best hard rock guitarist! I actually prefer Spanish Fly to Eruption, because Spanish Fly has some harmonic finger tapping parts.
I think this is from the Houston gig back in July 79. VH was totally On Fire on the 1979 World Vacation Tour. Check out ones from the Tokoyo shows and thanks for posting
This is from the 70's...His sound, fire, playing style...You couldn't find it anywhere else...And yet you are still suppose to admire him more for beeing a song producer...
It's one thing to be a guitargod...but at the same time make music that is so insanely good...and combineing theese two things...well...
All of your posts are amazing. For us guys 40 and over who grew up learning guitar as a young teen, Eddie was worshiped. And I am a fan of EVERYTHING he did before 1985 if you get my drift. Marshall plexis and the Charvel or Kramers...some other people have posted comments about getting this stuff into an archive. I would love to have these somehow...or at least be able to access them forever. Eddie was my first inspiration and made the most profound impact on my taste in music.
Thanks. I believe this is the best version of this online. It's the only one where he plays it just like the record. The sound quality could be better though.
