i had one of those extended lighters and it broke so i took the miny fuel line out then i poked a hole in the top of the sobe bottle cap with a tack and stuck it in there and JB welded the hole shut. It makes a tiny torch with a flame |--------| (actual length)and i used muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid) insead of lye
if the hole is too small it could blow up as the bottle would behave like an inclosed space and if said explosion cant escape throug the hole quick enough it will rip the bottle open or pop the lid off and that WILL make you jump
I wish that were true, but no the bottle can't blow up like this no matter how small the hole because in order for the flame to backflash into the bottle, it would require that the inside of the bottle contain oxygen. Yes the inside contains hydrogen, but without sufficient oxygen inside the bottle, there can be no internal combustion. And the reason there's no oxygen in the bottle is because the chemicals are busy displacing the inside air with hydrogen, and there's no room for oxygen to enter.
sorry my bad i thought it was from hho gas a bit late when i was making that comment i think lol i probably didnt read the comment how much gas dose it produce ? could this type of reaction be utlised for fule creation i.e. is it cost effective, produce a sustainable amount of hydrogen or would it have to be stored and used later ?
I'm pretty sure it's a highly inefficient way to make hydrogen. It costs me about 50c just to fill up a balloon with hydrogen this way. See, this way requires that you mix NaOH with water and aluminum. And that creates a lot of gross waste product. Always good to be thinking about these things though.
You put 20% Sodium Hydroxide and 80% water in a glass bottle. then add chunks of aluminum foil and it releases hydrogen. Then you just have to light it... or funnel it into a balloon.
is there some size the hole must be to light it, or can it be any size because i wondered if the hole was too big( the opening in the bottle) if the flame could go into the bottle and it would blow up.
It could still blow up from pressure, but I doubt greatly that that was remotely close to the point of blowing up.

Sweet, that's pretty impressive! Playing with chemicals is fun.

i done this exept with a plastic bottle and only a 1mm hole in the lid the thing almost blew up in my face

whoa, gotta be careful!

add 3% petrol it makes the flame bigger and it burns for longer ;)

How do u do it?

And sodium hydroxide is just lye right?
ForestWusabbi 4 years ago
Correct.
Kylork 4 years ago
is that by weight or by volume
mikeb1444 4 years ago
By volume. In fact, just experiment. You might need quite that much lye.
Kylork 4 years ago
isn't sodium hydroxide very soluable
you can put more then 20% in right?
quadraxis45 4 years ago
yes you can, i'm not sure what the recommended amount is though. I try not to put too much, it seems to be wasteful, but I could be wrong.

yes, but I prefer not to put too much, it seems to be wasteful, but I could be wrong.

is that even possible?
nicksoccer999 4 years ago
It is not possible for the bottle to blow up. You're safe. Happy burning.

I've done that, it's cool =)
