  • Arguably the weirdest flamewar yet seen on youtube...

  • Double pedal C at 16 Hz, technically below the human hearing range, if you don't hear it, you will feel it.

  • THIS IS NOT SPAM! PLEASE READ!!!

Hi, my name is Peighton. I'm 12 and I play trumpet. But recently, my band teacher asked me to switch to tuba(3 valve, Bflat) and I said that I'd give it a shot- So they let me try it to see if I can get down that low. And I could. My teacher said that I'd be a great tuba player, and that I have a great natural sound. So then I ordered my mouth piece(they provide the tuba). But what I was wonder if it was easy or difficult to learn the fingering and things like t

  • @Roflmao0516 it is easy to learn, I've been playing for 6 years, it's not that hard at all, and it's not easy to learn 4 valve fingerings either.

  • Wow. I'm impressed. Great Job.

  • this is a great performance

  • You are amazing, Ive watched most of your videos and I just hope to get to that level someday! Its mind blowing.

  • That is an F tuba you use right, I now have an F tuba myself and I learned the fingerings really quickly, but the fingerings for anything below a Bb are awkward.

  • Great Job Beth!!

(Mark Meyer--trumpet player at UK 04'-06')

  • Amazing! Bravo! kind regards from France!

  • love it.

  • Great performance. Must take a lot of training to effectively play the lowest notes of Encounters II with a regular-sized tuba.

  • Congratulations, you are really a great tuba player! Good luck for your future career

  • at glenn3rd and mattowen, HAHAAAAA you both are idiots for going on that long; cause talking shit in person is dangerous.

  • Your range is just stellar as is your musicianship. Been a pleasure to watch your videos. Inspiring for me as I get back into the big horn after a lapse of many years.

  • sehr gut!!!!!!!

  • Wunderbar!

  • 貴方の音を、じかに聴きたいです!!

  • Cosmically good!

    Amazing.

  • Would anyone be able to tell me where in the video the famous double-pedal C is? I'm not sure whether I'm just hearing overtones, or what. Thanks.

  • @yrxw5 Thank you.

  • Amazing!

  • Wow, excellent. Please tell me, how did you play the CCC?! I can usually only reach the pedal G above that triple C.

  • Are people seriously having a youtube fight on here? Lordy... Anyways this woman is an amazing talent. I love how she plays!

  • wow great!

i'll have to try that one day!

  • this piece is awesome. I love the different sounds and textures it can make.

  • WOW how u get that low????

  • @nuke585 '

using a timed flutter tongue rather than by buzzing the lips.

  • how would you get up higher then a c withought hyperventilating???

  • could explain what a timed flutter tongue is?

  • when you say the letter "r"? like RRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

  • don't quite understand, but Im getting an idea, i should get a tuba teacher THANKS!

  • It's very difficult to reach the double-pedal note at 2:18 with a regular tuba unless the tubist playing it is very well-trained and very experienced. Beth McDonald is both since the double-pedal C she played sounded okay to my ears. Has Ms. McDonald been trained by Mr. Roger Bobo, widely regarded as one of the world's best tuba players?

  • Precioso. Que poder tienen las tubas...

  • @MattOwen23 Matt Owen.... You are insulting. Your comments to me concerning what I said were a personal attack on my character and, if I didn't know better, I'd swear you're either a KKK member or a Neo-Nazi skinhead. I know what I was talking about when I said that Beth McDonald and Oystein Baadsvik should have used larger tubas when playing 'Encounters II' and that the lowest notes on those tubas sounded weak and strained. I am NOT dumb and, as far as I'm concerned, you can KISS MY ASS!

  • I AM a member of the KKK AND a Neo-Nazi Skinhead. Actually, dude. What are you talking about? This is something that started as a simple post. And you're throwing around technical terms like you're muthafuggin' Roger Bobo or Arnold Jacobs. Keep your mouth shut. You're obnoxious, and your obsession with tubas and tractors scares the shit out of me.

  • No one cares what you have to say. No one even cares that you exist. You've become a nuisance to the YouTube community. If it was up to me, you'd be banished for your ridiculous absurdities. I bid thee farewell. Stay gay!

  • @MattOwen23 You said things that constitute LIBEL...I may report you to legal authorities and request that YT suspend or close your account. I hope you BURN IN HELL!

  • fucking a, for those who don't know, she plays a double pedal C at 2:18, which is like an octave below the lowest C on a piano

  • The double pedal C still sounds a bit strained on Beth McDonald's tuba. Although she plays very well, I still believe a larger tuba would more easily play the double-pedal C at 2:18.

  • true dat, but if you find out what kind of tuba Roger Bobo plays, that's prob the best, cuz this solo was written based off of when he demonstrated what he could do for William Kraft... of course, Bobo's incredible

  • Roger Bobo is, no doubt, among the best tuba players in the world. I still believe that a very large subcontrabass tuba would play the double-pedal C at 2:18 with much less strain than the tuba Beth McDonald uses in this video or even the tuba Roger Bobo uses. Also, I have no doubt that Beth McDonald is also an excellent tuba player. Just that, for William Kraft's 'Encounters II' which uses the double-pedal C at 2:18, a much larger tuba should have been used.

  • @glenn3rd2004 You obviously either used faulty audio equipment or no audio equipment at all when viewing this video. I used a subwoofer capable of reproducing notes down to 8 Hz and the double-pedal C at 2:18 sounded okay to me. Yes, a larger tuba might have played the double-pedal C louder but a very-well-trained tubist can play the double-pedal C with almost any tuba.

  • @joshopsho I don't appreciate your insulting comment. If I didn't know better, I'd swear you're either a KKK member or Neo-Nazi. I know what the hell I was talking about when I commented about Beth McDonald's tuba. I still think she should have used a larger tuba to play 'Encounters II' and the lowest notes sounded weak and strained.

  • What the hell is a "hypercontrabass" tuba??? Give me a manufacturer and model of one of these things.

  • Besson manufactured a BBBBb hypercontrabass tuba many years ago and it was used at Harvard University. Unfortunately, this tuba wasn't well maintained and had to be replaced by another Besson tuba, a 'mere' subcontrabass BBBb tuba which is used occasionally in band concerts. And for all those who criticized my last comments, I still believe larger tubas can more easily play the double-pedal C of 'Encounters II'. Ms. McDonald is an excellent tuba player but a larger tuba should have been used

  • @glenn3rd2004 its true...i just got a new tuba its just 3/4 size i think and i can play higher notes and i have muchhh better tone but with the full size tuba i can play lower and with the 5/4 tuba i can play evennn lower....but all in all technically its not how big it is...its how much tubing it has..and usually tubas are bigger because of more tubing

  • @glenn3rd2004 I checked out all your comments. You, sir, are a dumbass! I read all your pointless comments on YouTube and Flickr concerning tuba players, pipe organs, construction and mining equipment, farm tractors, cruise ships, supertankers, and Serena Williams and found all your comments utterly stupid. You obviously have no idea what you're talking about in any of your stupid comments. SO STOP COMMENTING ON YOUTUBE AND FLICKR VIDEOS WHEN YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT!!!!

  • @gor32006 What you said here constitutes LIBEL! I will contact YT and have your account suspended or closed and may sue you for libel! YT is not for attacking peoples' character...just commenting on VIDEOS!

  • @glenn3rd2004 You need to think before making such comments. What sound equipment did you use to listen to this video? It's apparent that your sound equipment doesn't reach the double-pedal note at 2:18. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if your comments are fraudulent or you used a stolen YouTube ID.

  • @glennrickard1958 I certainly agree that 'glenn3rd2004's comments are stupid and pointless. In fact I read at least 100 comments posted by 'glenn3rd2004' on YouTube and Flickr concerning a variety of subjects and found all of them utterly pointless. However, you MUST HAVE PROOF OR EVIDENCE before saying that 'glenn3rd2004' is a fraudulent or stolen YouTube ID. It's much better to report stolen/fraudulent YouTube ID's to law-enforcement or YouTube's central office than post them in public.

  • @glenn3rd2004 You're stupid.

  • @glenn3rd2004 I read at least 100 comments posted by you on YouTube and Flickr concerning a variety of subjects and found all your comments utterly pointless. Please refrain from posting comments on any website unless you do your research.

  • is there any structure to this song?

    It doesn't follow any patterns...

  • It's not a song, it's a "study".

  • next carol jantsch right there.

  • eccellente controllo...... complimenti

  • this song's great

  • 5*****!!!!!

  • who are you?

you are my hero, so good player and beatifull!!

    Iam your fan

  • Wow..!!

    i like.

  • Tuba like this actually sounds good. I think the best part about tuba (or at least what it should be known for) is that it has a HUUUGE sound :) this is exercising it to the max lol

  • Very Nice.

  • Nice double pedal C. Beautiful range too. Sounds like you studied with Bobo at some point.

  • eres increible

  • Wounderful Performance, your tone and dynamics are wounderful to listen to. I have looked everywhere for that solo, where did you get from?

  • Great job on a LIVE performance! That says a lot when you're willing to put up live material for all to see! Keep up the great work!

  • F tubas low range, regardless of 3/4 or 6/4 ( I play a 3/4) is not going to be round..(thats a PT 10R right)

I know you won falcone.....remember this piece was written for Bobo and Kraft experienced with the sounds (but u had a good performance) and the high range on a CC (his 184 miraphone) made the encounter sound just as good....but real good job

  • effective performance...I know you are good....but I think (as a fellow performance major) that this piece works better on CC, gives the lower range a rounder sound, which was Krafts intended effect

  • Yeah, I think it (like most music) has merits on either tuba, I just generally prefer F tuba.

As far as the rounder sound: considering I'm playing on a 6/4 F, any lack of roundness is probably my fault and not the horn's...

  • Good Job!
