What I am asking is why the change? Why did Jesus (i.e. one of the three parts of the Trinity etc. = God) change his mind? Paul exhorts that we should cease from the practice. Why was circumcision good for one time and not good for another? Why does God change his mind?

It just seems like a very strange thing to do, wouldn't you agree, even if it were temporary? And circumcision is still widely practised, isn't it? In America, Canada, Australia etc. most or majority of 'Christian' baby boys in those countries are still circumcised. How can Christians be so apparently casual about this issue?

BTW, Christianity is not based on the Bible. Just the reverse: the New Testament Bible came out of the Church. Jesus founded His Church, then the Apostles (or their witness) penned the writings that came to be bound in the NT.
Jesus promised His Church would last until the end of time. No organization that is strictly manmade could possibly last for 2000 years, but the Catholic Church has.

I agree, Noah's ark is the most unbelievable story in the bible. I too believe in God but there is no way some of these stories in the bible happened the way it reads, simply impossible. Religion is manmade.
Look up "the math of the great flood" and tell me you still believe in Noah's ark. Common sense tells us there are so many impossibilities with this whole story. Now it is proven mathmatically. Seriously people, you need to wake up and start using the brain that God gave you.

The Bible tells us how God fathered His family. Jesus His only-begotten Son is the fulfillment/transformation/perfection of OT types and God's promises and blessings of His covenants. "The NT is hidden in the Old and the OT is revealed in the New." Jesus is the oath ("sacramentum") God swore to Adam and Noah and Abraham and Moses and David. He took the curses we owed for breaking the covenants upon Himself so we can be adopted sons of God.

@logofrobe There are a lot of credulous people out there who claim the name of Christian. Many don't know what they believe and why they believe it. What stories are you having trouble with? Some stories sound strange because of the ancient genres use. For example, in Genesis there are symbols not meant to be taken literally. They are to give you a sense of the thing happening. Others, like the Gospels, are meant to give you an historical account of the person of Jesus.

Adam and Eve - If we are all descendants of these 2 people, there wouldn't be multiple races. The bible states the earth is only 6 - 7000 years old. No way. The video omits the weighty evidence in the Law of Moses, the writings of the prophets and the Psalms with a direct and powerful bearing on fulfillment in Christ's death and resurrection and certainty thereof.

The entire Bible points to Jesus but everything cannot be said in ONE video. This video is designed to be category creating - so that people understand that the Law, the Prophets, and Psalms point to Jesus. This gives them a new lens to go back to Scripture and see Jesus' fulfillment for themselves.
This video shows that primarily the Bible is about Jesus not us. David and Goliath is not primarily about how we should slay our giants but point to the one who would come to slay the only giant that could really kill us. Secondarily* it's about us and our relationship to Him.

i never heard this entire sermon but i would argue that while the Bible is indeed about Jesus, it has to be about "us" to some extent. as we learn about what Jesus has done, it teaches US how to further relate to God and to other people- not for selfish reasons, but for His glory (so ultimately, yes, it's about Him). but a love story is always about two- Jesus was all about us, so we must be all about Him. having said all that, this teaching is on point about the entire OT foreshadowing Christ.
@rowancv It is only when you see the story ABOUT Jesus FOR God that you can truly understand the love story that we are invited into. Once we engage, we enter the story about Jesus for God. Then we become players in the story. But the story never becomes ABOUT us. This is a love story, not a romance story. There is a difference.

Watched it again... it is about who Jesus was, is and what he did, but why? Because its clearly also about you & me and what we must do. The letters in the NT are all about how we need to respond to Jesus. The experiences & thoughts of the people throughout the Bible reveal to us how we need be if we are going to take Him seriously. I'm more comfortable with the idea that every sermon should offer practical direction so that we can be empowered by the teachings of the Bible.
Being right is over rated. Jesus wasn't overly concerned that Legion receive the 'right' training before going off alone with the message. The man healing people in Jesus' name "wasn't one of them," but Jesus didn't care about his theology or his hermeneutics. Maybe, more often than not, it isn't about right and wrong. Maybe its more about red and blue - in the middle we can find shades of rich color... and we shouldn't forget about green, yellow and everything in between.

The gleanings you learn from the parts will do you no good if you miss the primary teaching of the whole. Jesus said the Bible was about him (Luke 24:27, John 5:46). Keller is not being a reductionist. He is explaining what Jesus taught in Luke 24.

@reydelfuegobpa, Keller didn't say it's ONLY about Jesus, but BASICALLY. His message is a balance to the tendency we ALL have to think that salvation is self-improvement and the Bible is a moral self-help book with examples to follow. If that is all we see in the Bible, we turn the Christian faith from a gospel back into a law.

What I am asking is why the change? Why did Jesus (i.e. one of the three parts of the Trinity etc. = God) change his mind? Paul exhorts that we should cease from the practice. Why was circumcision good for one time and not good for another? Why does God change his mind?

BTW, Christianity is not based on the Bible. Just the reverse: the New Testament Bible came out of the Church. Jesus founded His Church, then the Apostles (or their witness) penned the writings that came to be bound in the NT.
Jesus promised His Church would last until the end of time. No organization that is strictly manmade could possibly last for 2000 years, but the Catholic Church has.

The Bible tells us how God fathered His family. Jesus His only-begotten Son is the fulfillment/transformation/perfection of OT types and God's promises and blessings of His covenants. "The NT is hidden in the Old and the OT is revealed in the New." Jesus is the oath ("sacramentum") God swore to Adam and Noah and Abraham and Moses and David. He took the curses we owed for breaking the covenants upon Himself so we can be adopted sons of God.

@logofrobe There are a lot of credulous people out there who claim the name of Christian. Many don't know what they believe and why they believe it. What stories are you having trouble with? Some stories sound strange because of the ancient genres use. For example, in Genesis there are symbols not meant to be taken literally. They are to give you a sense of the thing happening. Others, like the Gospels, are meant to give you an historical account of the person of Jesus.

Adam and Eve - If we are all descendants of these 2 people, there wouldn't be multiple races. The bible states the earth is only 6 - 7000 years old. No way. We have so much scientific proof it is MUCH MUCH MUCH older than this. Plus all the contradictions. Sorry, only have 500 characters to work with, otherwise I could go on and on.

I live by Christian values and principles but I can't call myself a Christian since I don't believe many of things that are in the bible. Religion is manmade and therefore influenced by man. If Christianity works for you (or anybody else), thats great, it just no longer works for me.

The world-wide common stratigraphy supports a global flood in the past.
As described in the Bible, Adam and Eve would have had complete, error-free DNA, with every characteristic you see in today's humans in their DNA.
Population statistics militates against modern humans being 100K yrs old.

So, the evolutionists simply ignore tests resulting in young ages instead of modifying their theories to fit facts. Also C and U-Pb dating rely on unproven assumptions:how much parent element originally.
Dinosaurs were contemporary with Man (ie, fossilized footprints of both in the same mud).

It assumed layers laid down gradually, one at a time, but recent science has demonstrated that the layering happens rapidly and sequentially in rapidly moving water. The Flood is supported by this fact.
65m years is one theory. However, dinosaur flesh, frozen & dessicated, has been found. This flies in the face of reason, if they died 65m years ago.
"accepted" does not mean scientifically proven.

Whatever you live for is your 'Jesus'. And you follow the thing you live for. Jesus calls us to forsake these worthless idols and follow him, the source of true joy. You will follow something, you will (and do) live to honor and praise something.

@akaOtara You are right. People have used the Bible to take land and kill people. But they have done the opposite to what the Bible teaches. Just because people call upon the bible and God to do horrific things doesn't not mean the Bible teaches it. The Bible says just the opposite. History books record people doing wrong things too, but just because it has a record of it does not mean we should repeat.

i never heard this entire sermon but i would argue that while the Bible is indeed about Jesus, it has to be about "us" to some extent. as we learn about what Jesus has done, it teaches US how to further relate to God and to other people- not for selfish reasons, but for His glory (so ultimately, yes, it's about Him). but a love story is always about two- Jesus was all about us, so we must be all about Him. having said all that, this teaching is on point about the entire OT foreshadowing Christ.

@rowancv It is only when you see the story ABOUT Jesus FOR God that you can truly understand the love story that we are invited into. Once we engage, we enter the story about Jesus for God. Then we become players in the story. But the story never becomes ABOUT us. This is a love story, not a romance story. There is a difference.

Watched it again... it is about who Jesus was, is and what he did, but why? Because its clearly also about you & me and what we must do. The letters in the NT are all about how we need to respond to Jesus. The experiences & thoughts of the people throughout the Bible reveal to us how we need be if we are going to take Him seriously. I'm more comfortable with the idea that every sermon should offer practical direction so that we can be empowered by the teachings of the Bible.

Being right is over rated. Jesus wasn't overly concerned that Legion receive the 'right' training before going off alone with the message. The man healing people in Jesus' name "wasn't one of them," but Jesus didn't care about his theology or his hermeneutics. Maybe, more often than not, it isn't about right and wrong. Maybe its more about red and blue - in the middle we can find shades of rich color... and we shouldn't forget about green, yellow and everything in between.

@swplan76 The Bible is complex and speaks about many things, for sure. But primarily its theme is God saving a people for Himself through the person and work of Jesus Christ. The gleanings you learn from the parts will do you no good if you miss the primary teaching of the whole. Jesus said the Bible was about him (Luke 24:27, John 5:46). Keller is not being a reductionist. He is explaining what Jesus taught in Luke 24.

@GraphicChristology I guess that's the catch - who has a monopoly on the "primary teaching of the whole?" People who caused the formation of new denominations and cults have fought with others about this very thing. I personally think its a waste of time to lay such claims.
Keller's ideas are great (Northrope Frye - Typology) Great stuff. I actually love nearly all of what he's presented here...
But to deduce that the Bible is ONLY a finger pointing to Jesus is silly... its both/and

@swplan76 Not deduction, induction - observations from the background context of Biblical redemption sweeping the OT and NT. No one is saying "ONLY". Keller is saying Primarily. And he's saying it because Jesus himself makes these claims (Luke 24:27, Luke 24:44, and John 5:46).

To imagine that all the Bible is about is pointing to Jesus is to miss everything else that is going on. You say its only this, not that - maybe its only this AND that and a whole lot of other things too.
Reductionist thinkers try to boil things down into the simplest terms possible, to box things up so that they can control, define and show everyone what they've found. Its a fool's errand. Instead of trying to keep things small, especially with God, keep trying to see what else there is

I think the speaker is presenting something profound. Its important to recognize that, yes, the Bible is about Jesus and how everything that came before him pointed to him...
BUT...
It isn't just that.
Dualism says, "its either this or that - good or bad." Dualism leaves no room for awe and mystery.

@reydelfuegobpa, Keller didn't say it's ONLY about Jesus, but BASICALLY. His message is a balance to the tendency we ALL have to think that salvation is self-improvement and the Bible is a moral self-help book with examples to follow. If that is all we see in the Bible, we turn the Christian faith from a gospel back into a law.
