What about using an "FPV" camera to fly the plane from inside the truck? It could be used with a UHF radio to easily fly 10mi or more from the van. You could also land safely away from the tornado and retrieve it later. Not to mention being able to run from the storm without having to wait for the plane to land and packing it away. Don't know if you would want to takeoff any closer to the storm but you could!

I'm so jealous (or shouldn't I be?), in France we nearly never have extreme wheather. The last tornado we got was 2 years ago; it was just a mini-tornado but everyone in France was frightened.

How about instead of parachutes using balloons with enough helium to make the probe or camera neutrally buoyant therefore increasing their efficiency? Or using buoyancy balloons in conjunction with parachutes for lift?

I would not have thought a release of parachuted

probes would have drifted in that far. Seems that

the release point was outside the wallcloud edge

and so a mile or two till the tornado. Yes, there's

stout inflow, but a sink to intake ratio of 1000' to

2-3 mi? Why not just have Reed toss them out the

Dominator's window? With or without the chute. :)

Can't wait to see the data!

P.S. Maybe an almost nuetral bouyant sonde balloon? Balloon might break once 'in', or have

an RC release?

Definitely need to invest in some FPV equipment. You could set up your van as a mobile base station equipped with LCD screens. Your planes could be flown from inside the van miles away from the storm. check out my vids

I was hoping to see more on that tornado from the plane, but the tornado just wouldn't cooperate. The man flying that remote control plane has got some mad skills. I would have torn it up for sure.
