The boy can resist everythang, except the temptation to run like the howlin wind......no man is entirely free really. He is a slave to riches,to fate,or to the laws; or else the people prevent him from acting as he wishes....
I think yall got this all wrong despite his appearance of being broken and his mind right he played to the mans wishes then broke and showed them that till the very end he had his own mind and wouldnt get his mind right to what the man wanted. So I believe we are all shaking it boss shaking it while our goal is to do what we really want and will do in the end. That is the miracle of pride and spirit of all men.
This whole scene was not FAIR!! I mean--first they tell him to dig the hole, then fill it up again, and then dig it up and fill it again, and on and ON!! At SOME point--one would ask--:Which it is you want--fill it or dig it up?
every man has his breaking point, does anyone think theycould handle what he did in this movie and still fight the system. see how his boys turn their backs on him? where are they when he really needs them?
This was one humbling scene to watch when I first watching this film for the first time when i was younger. Movies like One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, Network, and this one where one man tries to take on a Institution but, falls short of his goal resonates with people of all generations
this kind of shit is highly exaggerated in hollywood. You mistreat a well liked convict this way in front of other prisoners and you will start a riot- a bloody riot, and payback can really be terrible.
"There Ain't No Grave Gonna Hold My Body Down" by Brother Claude Ely aka The Gospel Ranger. Died in 1978. IMO, Harry Dean Stanton (heard/seen here) does the best job of it to date.

how plastic are his friends to think their idol cant break . Even Christ said lord why have you forsaken me. What did his friends expect because he Luke kept digging to their chanting music he'd be dead. Thus evil wins control authority & friends fans or people can just chant you to your death.
Also, this movie was build on a stupid offense. He was cutting the heads of of parking meters. Added to the strange foundation to this movie. His "criminal" offense was super minor as to what people do today.
I think that the whole cast was good in this. Added to Paul's performance. Also build an emotional bridge to the other characters. I think that is what movies lack today is character development.
'One must imagine Sisyphus Happy.' Let your students track down that quote and how it pertains to Lucas Jackson especially this scene. Hint, original is en Francais.
6:38 one of the best shots in film history (IMO)

Yeah. And it only "resonates."
Most "people of all generations" have been, and will always be fucking cowards, backbiters, hypocrites, wannabe bosses, sheep.

I wonder how many of these prisoner/Boss dramas are played out every day,in subtler forms. In the workplace, for a good example.
