  • 6:38 one of the best shots in film history (IMO)

  • Boss Paul (Luke Askew) is so hot in this scene!!! <3

  • This classic is left off of every top 100 list I look at...... for me personally this ranks in my top 10 movies of ALL TIME.

  • The boy can resist everythang, except the temptation to run like the howlin wind......no man is entirely free really. He is a slave to riches,to fate,or to the laws; or else the people prevent him from acting as he wishes....

  • You can thank whatever Gods may be for your unconquerable soul Luke....

  • You're just a man Luke,more sinn'd against than sinning....

  • I think yall got this all wrong despite his appearance of being broken and his mind right he played to the mans wishes then broke and showed them that till the very end he had his own mind and wouldnt get his mind right to what the man wanted. So I believe we are all shaking it boss shaking it while our goal is to do what we really want and will do in the end. That is the miracle of pride and spirit of all men.

  • This whole scene was not FAIR!! I mean--first they tell him to dig the hole, then fill it up again, and then dig it up and fill it again, and on and ON!! At SOME point--one would ask--:Which it is you want--fill it or dig it up?

  • every man has his breaking point, does anyone think theycould handle what he did in this movie and still fight the system. see how his boys turn their backs on him? where are they when he really needs them?

  • In the book they kill Luke this way

  • This was one humbling scene to watch when I first watching this film for the first time when i was younger. Movies like One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, Network, and this one where one man tries to take on a Institution but, falls short of his goal resonates with people of all generations

  • very well said i could not of put it better

  • @davydmx

    Yeah. And it only "resonates."

Most "people of all generations" have been, and will always be fucking cowards, backbiters, hypocrites, wannabe bosses, sheep.

    Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • Just got my mind right ;)

  • this kind of shit is highly exaggerated in hollywood. You mistreat a well liked convict this way in front of other prisoners and you will start a riot- a bloody riot, and payback can really be terrible.

  • In modern society, we are ALL getting our minds right.

  • @kalki02 You are so right my friend , we reap what we sew.

  • @kalki02 Man you sure go that right.

  • Does anyone know the name of the second song?

  • "There Ain't No Grave Gonna Hold My Body Down" by Brother Claude Ely aka The Gospel Ranger. Died in 1978. IMO, Harry Dean Stanton (heard/seen here) does the best job of it to date.

  • The first song played is The Midnight Special by Leadbelly and it is awesome

  • Hi anybody knows name of the song? THX

  • why did you do it? it was sumthin to do.

  • best acting, one great movie

  • This is one movie that never gets old no matter how many times you watch it. A classic Paul Newman...RIP

  • Also, this movie was build on a stupid offense. He was cutting the heads of of parking meters. Added to the strange foundation to this movie. His "criminal" offense was super minor as to what people do today.

  • I think that the whole cast was good in this. Added to Paul's performance. Also build an emotional bridge to the other characters. I think that is what movies lack today is character development.

  • A+ acting, not like these hacks now a days. RIP Paul.

  • RIP Paul Newman. great scenes from a great actor and fine person

  • god bless you sir

  • rip newman

  • 4:30 to 4:50 is amazing acting and intensity!!

  • Now,I can be good guy. Or I can be one mean sunuvabitch. It's all up to you.

  • Fuck boss keane.

  • FUCK authorities, the sons of bitches, fuck boss hawg and his kin folks man.

  • I heard that Newman didn't real "dig" filming this scene too much.

  • You back sassin me boiii ? hahaaaa

  • Haaaaaaaaaaaahahahaa what's your dirt doin in my yard boi ??

  • Was that Harry Dean Stanton really singing and picking guitar? wow! he just got even cooler!

great scene from one of my favorite films. Paul Newman is stellar

  • you will get your mind right!!!

  • Who played the young Boss?

  • I wonder how many of these prisoner/Boss dramas are played out every day,in subtler forms. In the workplace, for a good example.

  • Paul Newman is brilliant in this scene. I was almost crying with him.

  • No John McLiam.

  • Morgan Woodward, Rosy? I always liked him in those guest roles on Gunsmoke.

  • Morgan Woodward played Boss Godfrey. The guy with the rifle, sunglasses, and didn't talk.

  • My Grandpa plays Boss Kean :)

  • Great scene - "nobody knows you when your down and out."

  • The perfect "anti-establishment" film of its era. They had us by our "balls" in the 60's and ten times worse today.

  • we have'nt seen nothing yet.

  • "No I won't! I won't! I got my mind right!" Great scene from one of my all time favorite movies! Thanks for sposting!

  • Luke really should have known - keep your dirt out of the ditch.

  • 'One must imagine Sisyphus Happy.' Let your students track down that quote and how it pertains to Lucas Jackson especially this scene. Hint, original is en Francais.
