Funny story, I saw a blue 1968 Ford Galaxy 500 just like theirs in the wrecking yard the other day and thought of that Subway theme and just had to hear it again!
Every time I watch The French Connection, and the credits rush at you on the screen, and hear this music, I get goosebumps. The first time I heard it, I thought: "this is going to be good..."
I wish there was better focus on theme music today. The French Connection's score fits so perfectly with the grittiness and intensity of the film's subject matter. Today there seems to be an overbearingly formula approach to theme music. The music that accompanies Popeye tracking Frog One to the subway PUTS you in the city to such a degree that you can smell exhaust.
Most of the musical cues and themes here were not heard during the scenes they were initially written for, they were edited and moved to different scenes in the film, where they still worked effectively. For instance, "Staking Out Sal", intended for the first act of the film, was moved to the last act, when Frog One drives the Lincoln to Ward's Island.
@92af I also love the french connection, but I don't think comparing the french connection to Lord of the Rings is really a fair comparsion you should probably compare it too I don't know another cop movie.
@TheMasterYun How about The French Connection to Dirty Harry? Both produced and released at roughly the same time, similar main characters (Popeye/Harry) and similar scenery/themes.
@92af The two movies belong in two different genres, so you can't really compare the two. LOTR stands on its own and so does The French Connection. Now, having said that, The French Connection is an awesome movie :p
I know every scene of this movie from front to back and visa versa. I can match each piece with its prope scene. That's the effect this masterpiece had on me. The Seven Ups was inspired by this filmed with Starred the Co-Starr of The French Connection, Mr. Roy Scheider.

Great music-great acting-great plot-no cops with 1/2 wit swaggers (so freakin old) -no exploding cars....just an excellent film. A classic.

@92af That's a most bizarre comparison, as the two films aren't at all alike, and they don't try to be.
