I never heard of an alternator that caused that. I would have guessed loose battery connections.

Its the cat my 2001 is doin the same thing with no power and it smells like rotton eggs

That's a transmission problem, this car is geared-high to reach it's peak at the top of each gear (highest RPM) my guess is the belt is loose and it's slipping in the beginning of each gear. Could be the transmission though.

I feel your pain.  I have an 02 elantra and constantly have problems with it. will be the last hyundai i ever buy.

Good news is that as long as ur timing belt doesnt let good.. the engines are bullet proof!!!!!
