Jimmy Barnes was born in Glasgow, Scotland and arrived in Adelaide, South Australia as a 4-year old on 7 January 1961 with his parents Jim and Dorothy
The song's about a friend of Jim's who got knifed in Glasgow when they were kids. They were bailed up one day and his mate got a flick-knife in the guts and died right there. That's all. It's very literal, as Jim was back then. He wasn't big on alegorical statements back in 1983. Still one hell of a rock song. Thanks for the upload.
Some comments are funny, who cares really. Music defines certain periods in our life and brings those memories back of some great and some not so great. Just enjoy it for that is what music is all about.
I will be listening to this song whilst knee deep in grenade pins with a thousand screaming chinese pouring over no mans land.......AAAAAHHHHH!Fucking brilliant
In life there is only 1 prize. And that prize is to "survive". The prize of a successful marriage is equal to the PRIZE of actually surviving a terrible divorce. Imagine if you lost your wife at age 48. You got to stand your ground, pick up the pieces and re-build your life. To "survive" is what it is all about. Same goes with retiring after working for 50 years of your life just to enjoy 10 years. DOn't you want at least another 50 years to enjoy retirement? ...... Only the STRONGEST SURVIVE.
oh man. When i marched out of Kapooka in 99, there were 3 songs the cpl's played while we stood to attention in full pollys, in the dark. We all, cried.
This is a great road-trip song. You can sing along as loud as you like, try and put on your best Barnesy voice and really get into the lyrics and understand what they mean.
Mal Eastick has been Jimmy's best guitarist since Chisel. The only one who could play this solo note for note has been Johnny Diesel......the rest have never come close...
Mr. J Barnes in his finest Hour !!! Aussie Rock icon and still with more petrol in the tank. Brilliant Live . Song about Mateship and chopping out a mate in hard times." In forpenny, in for a pound". Thanks for the song.
Agree the song is a classic and a great AFL song for the finals..... They should bring back the best classics such as Jimmy Barnes, Ice House and so on... Where is the feeling in the song these days... So sick of the bullshit American pussy music about getting laid.
Mám rád ten jeho styl hudby............ správný rocker ,super hlas, perfektní skladba,krásný solo..............,jsem rád že jsem po dlouhý době zase našel tenhle klip s dobrou hudbou..........
When Jimmy made this classic video, he did all his own stunts, one of which was being strapped to the side of a speeding train. As a result, Mushroom records insured him for a cool one million bucks!
there must more viewers. this song is an absolute classic. this is the perfect AFL song and for good reason. in a grand final there is no second prize for the losing team
@ipsilon160 its about life ya dickhead - geez not everything is football for fucksake! *but yeah i know what ya mean - excellent sports song - cheers mate
@DocBrewster point taken. NRL is a boring game i have tried to watch a few games but fell asleep half way through the first half and the AFL isn't getting any better half the games aren't worth watching these days. so from now on i will talk about other sports not just AFL
@ipsilon160 I meant its about life in general - not just sport - like work and money and stuff - even music industry itself - for example ACDC earn $100 million bux a year whilst other bands just as good or better (like The Angels) struggle on the pub circuit.
But yeah sport too of course - its a top sports song - one of the best ever.
Yes, Barnes is Scottish-born Australian. Yes, he is one of the biggest Australian rock icons. Yes, sport is the central, male, Australian past-time. To limit this song to sports though is like taking 0.0001% of its meaning. It is centrally a song about a man having a woman snuff the life out of him. It is about survival. Sure, sports. What about #1: women? Work? Family? Raising children? Letting parents go? And helping out as VALNUT1 says.
@ipsilon160 people like you piss me off, all over the news "our heroes go to do battle with the west coast eagles", well news to you mate, people like my two cousins in the army, litterally do go out and do battle in afghanistan! and sadly two of my family left last year for afghanistan, and only one returned.
@adflwf look i try not to bring the topic of war into the comments bar because it is a topic i much rather not talk about. it is a great sports song and a few people have said it is a great song for life in general. but you also don't know my opinion on soldiers that give their lie for our nation and for freedom. so i will tell you it is really rather simple i hold them in the highest regard so maybe you shouldn't judge a persons veiw on a song before you comment yourself
You fuckers have got it all wrong - he's an Aussie, and no matter how hard you look there isn't a prize for coming second....loser!
