Sarod and Sitar are extremely difficult to play with with each other, especially because of the tuning...congratulations to these women for pulling this off...sat nam....
Tanpura is the drone behind the melody instruments, never really changes.Sitar is the twangier out of the two on this recording, and the sarod has the more muted sound...

Japan, suminigashi "ink floating)i think it also influence Turkey, Europe and probably India..:) thanks..i will put credits...wish it's ok..

if your in san rafeal,,ca...the ali akabar school of music has lots of them,,,there inspiring to hold,,,they require, in my opinion deserve a lifetime of dedication. and the rewards are worthy no doubt,,,i could sit in a cave and jam,,kinda thing..eastern theory is improvisation, with 24 notes to an octave, and 10,000's of scales, all to be expressed at in the mood of the raga at a matching emotion, or scale. all music, is a jewel of existence, from first note to symphony, for everyone.
@Fyrged Sitar is extremely hard to learn, yet rewarding. If you know how to play guitar, violin, etc you can learn it with a little bit more ease. Ive been playing guitar/music for 10 years, and sitar for only 2 years. I still am having difficulty getting the mazrabs to properly hit the strings. Sarod is a little bit easier but just as rewarding. I suggest starting with the sarod, then moving to sitar. Both are beautiful instruments, so there is no wrong choice :)
Sarod is actually supposed to be easier to play than many other instruments according to some people because eventhough it's difficult at the beginning,it gets easier once you learn for some years. On the other hand, every instrument is tough to learn, but sarod isn't significantly difficult....and if you love it ,it's even easier to learn how to play it once you master a basic sense of tune and rythmn.
@lovelylolola im a guitar player and a big music theory fan...heres my 2 cents on this... its not hard to learn an instrument. that being said its easy to learn to play songs but learning to play your instrument is TOTALLY different. learning to feel it, be it, believe in it, and actually put your own emotion into it while refining your own technique and playing style takes years. What you put into it...is what you get out of it
@TheRenegadeGuitar You are quite right...and one also has to have a basic inclination towards music in general and the instrument that s/he wishes to learn to play in particular, otherwise I've seen some people take years even to learn to play the basics.
@lovelylolola yes, he's right. i never played any indian instruments (yet), but to me it looks (very) hard to.. tune! and (very) easy to play! i find it easy to play any string instruments, well i started guitar long ago.. but i'm not master in any.
So, you're saying that if I gave you an instrument with 3,000 strings and 7,000 pedals, you'd learn and remember the string names and what all the pedals do?
dear, sitar is not oreginaly from Iran or persia, Afghanistan has more commen culture than Iran with India, acourding to speach of famuse afghan singer Nashenas, Indian old music came oreginal from Afghanistan before Islam to india.means we (Indian,Afghanistanes) are more close than Iran
Initially, people seem to find unfretted stringed instruments (e.g., sarod, violin) more difficult to play than fretted ones (e.g., sitar, guitar). That is one of the potential differences affecting learning earlier on.
Does anybody know a recording that clearly shows the differences between the sarod, sitar and tampura? I need to be able to tell the difference for my GCSE listening exam!! If anyone knows of any useful sites for Indian instruments in general i'd be grateful!!
Tanpura is the drone behind the melody instruments, never really changes. Sitar is the twangier out of the two on this recording, and the sarod has the more muted sound.
Can anybody recommend which to learn first? I am really interested in learning to play sitar or sarod, but I don't know which. Could anybody with a musical background recommend which I should learn first?
I personally would start with a sitar. One feature of the Sarod is that there are no frets. The sitar however does, and I recomend a Sitar if this is your first instrument to get a feel for notes on a fretted instrument first.
u ppl r too gud for ur age yaar.. u should come out wit more compositions.. its great to see 2 young bengali girls wit a bend to classical music(always waned to learn da sarod myself, dad always discouraged me sayin its too tough:(... )..
Don't let your father stop you. Do it! My father said I wouldn't learn anything on guitar but I made him get me one and I learned! Now he encourages me to keep playing, he enjoys it. It's a great hobby and it's fun when you get the hang of it. I got to play a sarod for the first time yesterday, it was amazing. I don't think it's that hard to play a sarod. Sure it's fretless but you learn! I'm thinking of getting myself one.

Well it may not be hard to make a sound but it's hard to make it sound good.
deepislandboy 2 years ago
do you play the sitar? it's really pretty easy to make it sound good.I have friends who play it for the first time and it sounds fine
teamhowdy 2 years ago
Of course if you just pluck the strings it sounds beautiful but to play complicated ragas and play with feeling, i'm sure it is very difficult.
deepislandboy 2 years ago
thats the same thing with any instrument. it is really no harder to learn sitar than any other instrument.
teamhowdy 2 years ago
because there can be up to 21 strings on a sitar, not many people know that you only play about six depending on the type =P
Hellion12321 2 years ago
first of all you only play 2 of the strings pretty much and all that takes to learn is for someone to tell you that.
and I feel like a doosh agruing so much on youtube so I'm gonna stop after this.

I agree, lets just stop and listen to the beautiful music
