  • Live! Crappy mix. STILL sounded GREAT! My favorite vocalists. Best melodies, only thing that hurt them (besides Poly) were that they could be a little weak on the lyrics at times. One of my favorite bands. Read "Without You" (their biography) if you want to hear about a true tragity in rock history. Bad management, stolen funds, living in near poverty with top 40 charted hits playing everywhere. It finally killed Pete and Tom.

  • This song and Badfinger still make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up!!

  • A very under rated band too sad pete and tommy are not with us anymore

  • They play this badfinger music occasionally on the so called 'oldies' station-("oldies" my ass!)-more like LEGENDARY!

  • Hey, love the Maj7 chord ending! The record ends with the usual major chord in whatever key this is. Sorry my guitar is in storage.

  • Wow, recall flashback; on the radio twenty times a day;... only, almost forgotten.

  • Great tune!

  • By '73 the sh*t was hitting the fan. No smiles, no fun. You can tell by just looking at them. If their manager was half as bad as they say, may he rot. Seems some ruined lives.

  • I like the introducer- Canada's Anne Murray

  • Great 70's soft rock.............

  • The lackluster sound system for the show only proves why Badfinger is so great. They sounded awesome in spite of the sound mix.

  • Nice les paul crunch !

  • Perfect vocals. I like this sweet romantic pop confection.

  • It's unfortunate that so much of their material didn't get a push from the label or radio stations. Look to the entire Badfinger discography that is complete with amazing hits and just as wonderful gems.

  • what dvd is this performance from

  • Yup. Great little ballet.

  • Lead guitar is out of tune...

  • O Pete era lindo, a banda prometia.

  • What a talent, what a tragedy...

  • Glorious group, what a tragedy...

  • 1st three digits of number of views

  • Lousy sound mix or not...

This is a band consisting of the best ever songwriters and performers we have ever had in the UK... including the Beatles!

Thank you so much for posting this classsic...

  • Wow these guys really studied the Beatles :) Funny how I didn't really notice back then.

  • don't know if it was the business or not but a tregic end to a great band!

  • I was 16,and what a great time man. You could listen to a song and imagine in your own mind what it meant to you. There was no video telling you what it meant.Man what memories the Midnite Special brings back. It was a GREAT show, and the bands played LIVE. I need a time machine, get me the hell out of here.

  • Instead of going about remaking all past great movies - like Dirty Dancing, for example - they need to make movies about all past great rock groups.

  • @rmtmiller I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO with you! I heard Footloose too ... Badfinger was amazing.

  • I visited the Rock and Roll Hall Hall Of Fame not to long, and I really liked it. But there were alot of American bands that were inducted that shouldn't have, and alot of awesome bands from England that should of been inducted already.(Badfinger, Humble Pie, Jethro Tull to name a few). Badfinger is one of my favourite band. It's about time they get noticed for being the best of music.

  • The worlds most silent drums

  • good stuff

  • This song is absolutely iconic! This was the early '70's. This was our high school and college days. This was our passions, our love lives. This was such a defining song. Listen and live it again! Music makes the memories.

  • Isn't this EXACTLY what rock and roll is all about? Isn't this song the perfect to let a person listen to, that had never heard of rock and roll? I think this song is quintessential rock and roll! Man they sure as hell don't make music like this any more!

  • I saw Badfinger play the 'Straight Up' Lp. ca. '72; Pete Ham got pissed off and kicked something over (I remember my sister saying it was his amp right after it happened; all these yrs. later Matovina says "mic stand" ... who knows?). I loved them then and I still do. What a kick ass band.

  • Best guitar solo ever!

  • Happy, happy-Bf make me happy!

  • Just goes to show you how important a good voice and good vocals are to make a song sound good live. With all the obvious technical problems here, the song still sounds strong because Pete's voice is naturally good. This was an early Midnite Special show so they probably hadn't gotten the mix techiniques perfected. It's also qute obvious that the boys are shouting over their amp volumes, so they probably didn't even have stage monitors to work with, or if they did the monitor volumes were nil.

  • Coolest band/songs ever! You are always happy when it comes on :)

  • Maybe, it was something to do with the tv show but the drums weren't miked up. Wondering, if anyone else caught that?

  • Far Out , Now That takes me back :) QC

  • Stan Polly did to Bad finger what Knight did to Grand Funk

  • 17 people have NO CLUE!!!!

  • great band one of my all time favorites, despite that sorry bastard Stan Polley

  • @barnabas50 Well look on the bright side barnabas, polley is dead!

  • Even though this has a lousy sound mix..,it still sounds better than today's music.

  • I guess they were too beautiful to live.

  • Pete's already slipping away here. you can see it if you know what to look for.

  • This rocks...its part of our history, music and mind....Beautiful harmony...cool 70's sound. Simple song with high emotional impact..I love it! Thanks from millions chevy 505!

  • "No Dice" is one of the top one hundred albums of the 1970s, and that was a good crop. I recommend a listen to anyone who appreciates well-crafted songs with a good rock groove.

  • They were a great group!

  • Badfinger = pure rock and roll

  • Rot in hell Polly...

  • Some one ,some where need's to make a movie about these guys, greed ,talent, and a tragic ending.....the BEATLES were getting screwd too but not as bad as Badfinger!!That guy Polly..jeez ..some people have no soul!!

  • @beatlestoneful Will you take a ''Behind The Music'' instead?

  • @beatlestoneful What greed? are you british?? Well i am and a musician..These guy's got ripped off....End ov...

  • classi case of the record company screwing the artist poor guy wound up committing suicide when he shoulda just buckeled down an wrote some more hits an got away from them like john fogerty did an later sue for the rights back took him decades tho to do this!

  • Paul wrote Come and get it...

  • Pete Ham always reminded me of John Lennon (the head movements and expression)

  • Badfinger wrote absolutely awesome songs. If you're not famiiar with them, check out more like Baby Blue :)

  • About the sound mix, Chevy, yes, it's poor quality especially by today's standards; but remember, in 1973 most television "music/variety" programs weren't equipped to handle rock bands with their sophisticated sound setups. Also remember, back then there was no such thing as high-fidelity sound on television. Even today, the speakers and amplifiers in most TV sets are no better than those in your kitchen-table radio. The main idea was to get the vocals out there, which they did here!

  • Very Nice

  • Holy shit! They are British!!!!!!! The Stones weren't the only ones with soul!

  • absolutely beautiful, makes my heart sing

  • Awesome.....

  • 3 out of four now dead, so sad

  • WOW, Anne Murray introducing Bad Finger? How cool is that?

  • @1952Telecaster Yeah! That IS pretty cool, isn't it!

  • It's better McCartney than he actually turned out. Wjat's a great McCartney song post Beatles? Jet, and it is till bullshit, and ajuniors farm which makes no sense.

  • Paul wrote this tune but I always thought it was a George Penned tune. Should have known.

  • @jimidee33: Pete Ham wrote this song.

  • this is a beautiful song

  • Todd Rundgren saved 'Straight up' from the dumpster.

  • @crabshaw love Todd as well but this song wasn't from that album

  • This is real rock and roll. RIP Pete.

  • "Ham sings great, but Molland's guitar is out-of-tune. He was very sloppy live. Too bad. Ham is always good in the live stuff. The others varied. This has a terrible sound mix. Early Midnght Special's didn't have it down yet." earlier comment by GraceBarrett that needs to be re-posted. Too true!

  • @lynnsaoirse yes the mix -- no reverb - compressed --- horrible - you can imagine how nice this would sound 15 years later [ to the present ]- Television pickup back then [remember the Beatles on Sullivan] was terrible- I'm sure this sounded much better to the audience [ more dynamic, lively and open] --- At least I hope it did!! --- When stereo signals hit television, the sound to the home listener opened up quite a bit- But even much of the stereo stuff was not good..

  • @roselandalvin Yeah, virtually no drums and no leslie on the guitars...not much guitar, either, actually, but Pete sounds great. This is the archetypal perfect power pop song...too bad there's no fucking power!

  • @roselandalvin

yes despite all that the quality still shines through..I mean does anyone sing a high backing vocal like that live today..dont think so..

  • They must have pissed off the soundman during rehearsal. I don't think you can mix a band this badly without doing it on purpose. Where's the drummer, in the parking lot?

  • @tdelamont

dude, i am lmao at your comment......you are spot on!?

  • Comment removed

  • @treehugger1980ful. The singer is the late great wonderful very talented Pete Ham.

  • @Benayrunyon thank u

  • They sound like shit actually.

  • @MrCoal11 Coming from a musical moron, this makes sense!

  • BadAzz

  • No lip-synching on this, which is great.

  • Still ranking as one of my all time favourite songs

  • THE BEATLES !!

  • Love this song so much. Just classic. A group from the 90's did an incredible cover of this at their concerts.

  • @michellesupport89 you might talking about Jellyfish, which was an incredible pop/rock group from the San Francisco area in the early 90s.

  • @bignumber59 Yes that is who i was talking about. Cannot believe I did not put their name in the comment haha.

  • @bignumber59 I remember Jellygish weren't they from San Jose?

  • @bignumber59 I saw Jellyfish in '91 open for the Black Crows - I went and bought their CD the next day as they kicked my ass all the way to Timbuk Two

  • they are set up left handed.look again.

  • I don;t think that's Mike on drums. He plays left handed and the drums are set up for a right handed player.

  • In his suicide note Pete said that we was going to take Polley with him... for all we know the bastard is still alive somewhere... so much for Kharma....

  • @hammonddave stan polley died about 2 years ago..unfortunately the b*sterd outlived Pete by about 33 years and Tom by about 25...i hope they were years of pain and misery...

  • what a great band. those old gibsons sounds nice even out of tune. pity

  • What a fantastic voice Pete Ham had..

  • so glad i found a real video of the original lineup performing live, without a prerecorded backing track. pete ham was such an incredible singer and musician...gone much too early.

  • good vocal works as usual for all top notch bands

  • Great Badfinger song & performance. It should be called "Badfinger - Semi-Unplugged". The guitars are pretty quiet considering how the version on "No Dice" practically hits you right between the eyes. And where's poor Mike Gibbins? I can see him back there flailing away, but I can hear nary a thump out of his drum kit. Haha. Nevertheless, it sure makes me miss the days of the Midnight Special and the great bands they had on there. And Badfinger was one of the best.

  • I was at the beach with my sister. This song came on a girl's radio and a she sang along: "Knock down the old gray wall." My sister passed away since then. But that's the memory I associate with this excellent song.

  • 14 Losers, Badfinger were a great band with incredible sound, it's a shame what happened and to this day, still goes on, rotten so called managers that use and destroy bands and singers. The two main players in the band are gone, but their music will live forever and longer than the 14 LOSERS.

  • george harrisons red gibson sg

  • GREAT SONG, GREAT VOICE!!

  • ya to suicides pete ham had .27% blood alcahol Level and hanged himself he had a note to his manager that said he was a souless bastard and tom evans was found 13 years later in 1983 hangin from a willow tree in his back yard.dam tragic

  • @glamourboy89 I believe Tom Evans' suicide was only 8 years after Ham's... which was in '75.

  • Vocals, musicianship, lyricists, talent....what 'wasn't' to like about these guys?

  • @tallpaul88 Personally, I've found that the only negative thing about Badfinger is that they never got the credit they deserved...and, of course, that wasn't their fault at all.

  • In 1991, Polley pleaded no contest to charges of misappropriating funds and money laundering in Riverside County, California. Aeronautics engineer Peter Brock accused Polley of swindling him for US$250,000 after the two set up a corporation to manufacture airplane engines. Polley was placed on probation for five years and ordered by the court to return all missing funds to Brock, although the complainant said the restitution never materialized

  • That's when guys could really sing.

  • interesting how they line themselves up similar to the Beatles. Pete standing far away from the harmony the way John did. Very underrated group.

  • So sad for a Group with so much talent!! Under appreciated. Only one remains. Joey Molland, keeping the Faith alive!

  • JOEY MOLLAND LOOKS A BIT LIKE PAUL MCCARTNEY

  • @TheMarianitotv I always thought of that for a very long time.

  • I love Badfinger.

  • Their Manager has a special place in hell waiting for him........

  • Sickening that business crushed the talent and life from this band. People like Stan Polly are not needed on this planet. Too many like him already.

  • Earlier I said the 6 part documentary was on Facebook, I meant YouTube. Just type in Badfinger Part I and it will pop up. It has 6 parts and covers what exactly went down.

  • Anyone know what happened to Pete Ham's guitars??

  • @castorriver

His red SG was sold at auction a few years ago... for $567,000! It was previously owned by George Harrison and used by George and John Lennon on Revolver and the White Album. George gave it to Pete, who can be seen playing it in a couple of videos here on YouTube, in 1969. You can see Harrison playing it in the "Paperback Writer" video, particularly the one they made for the Ed Sullivan. Just search Paperback Writer Sullivan. The guitar passed to Pete's brother after his death.

  • My favorite version of this song

  • Awesome songs of this band! The Dogstar version fo this is very cool too, thanks for share it mate :)

  • used to go to see these guys when they were the Ivyes, when they did gigs at the room at the top in high street swansea, they were so special even then RIP Pete & Tommy, be lucky Mickey . Hope ron gets well too good luck .

  • interesting. i wanna see that. six part series. them poor guys what a shame.

  • Type in Badfinger Part I and it will pull up about a 45 minute story on them.

  • grew up raging out to this song... nice one badfinger

  • Weren't they mentored by McCartney and signed to Apple?

  • I just love Badfinger, espcially him. RIP.

  • I am so glad that there's alot of people out there love Badfinger. I think their music is great and the whole world needs to experience their music. Pete Ham is a great songwriter. I play their music all the time. RIP PETE & TOM. You are missed.

  • when is the movie coming out?

  • こんなにカッコイイ曲は21世紀にはない。 日本にもない。 最高の名曲の一つ。

  • anyone else hear that nice cranked plexi going on..thats what an amp is folks

  • why kill yourself over a manager? Beat his ass first. geez.

  • This and many of their songs are stone cold classics and wonderful pop. But they always seemed to have the worst luck performing- or they had the flop sweats or something... Every performance sounds unrehearsed and sloppy. Too bad.

  • @saguaroboy Ham sings great, but Molland's guitar is out-of-tune. He was very sloppy live. Too bad. Ham is always good in the live stuff. The others varied. This has a terrible sound mix. Early Midnght Special's didn't have it down yet.

  • @GraceBarrett Still beats lip sync bs like all they do live today

  • I saw them live & I can tell you from personal experience - their sound & performance was absolutely great !! Great band, great songs, Pete was a great songwriter.

  • I don't think people really appreciated how soulful Pete Ham's voice really was. I think this show really showcased it well, despite some of the sound problems. OT - I really miss the Midnight Special. That show was great in the Seventies for live performances in Rock, Country & Soul - until they started featuring Disco artists. I don't think there are many of today's "artists" who could carry a show like that.

  • WOW what a beautiful voice he has for sinining.

  • STAN POLLY IS THE CRAPHEAD WHO BROKE THIS BAND UP !!!!

  • You know, if somebody screwed me that bad that life wasn't worth living anymore, I'd take him out first before I went - \:^]

  • Pete Ham great! Power to Badfinger!

  • This is fun to see. Shame Joey Molland's guitar is out-of-tune. A real screw-up for television. Maybe the worst TV sound mix. Almost no drums, but AS usual, Pete Ham's talent overcomes the proceedings and makes you smile!

  • @ceterceter Absolutely! Looks like two overhead mics and no kick mics, so probably no toms, no snare, no hat. No wonder. Wow things have changed.

  • Taffy - the video is OLD - we had nothing in the way of sound and recording back then. This was the best there was for live Rock on TV - and you had to stay up until midnight or 1 am to see it - no vcrs back then either. That said: I have always loved that band and finally collected most of their music. It is very hard to listen to now and not think about the sad story behind it (which I hadn't known until recently). Just imagine what could have come from it over the past 30 years.

  • Pete was such a nice man - I remember talking to him once. Pete had passion and was singing with it. They were more than a studio band, taffyandtiffy.

  • Pete was such a nice man - I remember talking to him once.

  • Crap sound here - what a studio band they were tho!. Impossible to keep the harmonies w/ no instruments! Can't even hear the drums fr God's sake. What a shame. What tension. What a rip off. They deserved better.

  • I love their music. Timeless...!!!

  • Regardless of heritage, unscrupulous business managers have been the undoing of entertainers for as long show business has existed, and it's safe to say that Stan Polley was among the worst..

.For my money, he might as well been charged with Pete's death, because short of using his bare hands, he essentialy "Killed" Pete Ham, a gentle soul who deserved better.

Tom Evans never recovered from Pete's death, eventually taking the same path.

    One of rock's great tragedies...

  • cool tune...

  • there is 12 losers, great band who should have gone to greater things, but got used and destroyed. but at least we who love them and there time with us, we get to cherish the songs and music there created. not like the crap nowadays, R.A.P. shit so sucks, I feel so bad for what is is played nowadays, young ones don;t even know what great musix or even real music is nowadays.

  • I totally agree, Rock music covers a wide and diverse spectrum. Rock influence can come from anywhere.

  • This song makes me all warm and fuzzy !

This is the only band that to me sounds like the Beatles.

    So tragic their story.

    Will always love their music.

  • F-ed by their manager and record companies. But they could have come back, so sad.

  • hey thats anne murray inroing the band!!!

  • people in the music biz are usualy cold hearted cocksuckers, and thats the type that ripped these guys off. too bad pete and co. were gentle souls and not ass kickers cuz i sure miss them...

  • HEYA!!! Alwys..Luv this song...

HEYA!!!! luv u 4ever......This song reminds me of my first boyfriend,,n the day...Pete reminds me of him....Fav make out song...OMG...LUV IT....RESTNPEACE...Urockedmyworld....

  • another thing wrong today, when you watch these 70's videos, you don't see any fat people. Should tell you that WE all eat way to much unhealthy food...

  • wow love these guys. definitely one of my favorite bands

  • RIP Pete Ham and Tom Evans :-(

  • thanks,,,i prefer the studio version but petes singing here is nice

  • R.I.P Pete Ham

  • thomas evans etait vraiment un tres bon chanteur

  • One of my fav's from de ol days. No going back but great memories.

  • great group discovered by the beatles liked them when they were the iveys too.too bad their awful manager screwed them royally.and they had nothing and 2 of them commited suicide.

  • Two suicides from this group primarily as a result of their crooked "manager". So tragic.

  • @BCboy65 a huge loss to us who still listen to their 1965-1975 music.

  • @BCboy65 And drugs. It is a sad loss.

  • @floridacomedyfan: Drugs? I'm sure they all experimented with drugs, but none of them were addicts.

  • @BCboy65 In his suicide note, Pete Ham called Stan Polley a "soulless bastard". He was 100% correct. Very tragic story....

  • @BCboy65 or drugs...
