wow...well I was hoping to see more American Female Screen writers busting out but I guess the fact that WOMEN in general are getting out there and getting heard is all that matters. I can't wait to see how some of those movies turn out I am really looking forward to Maleficent the most. I hated Sleeping Beauty but always thought that Maleficent was so cool. I mean she turns into this kick ass dragon, lol. My parents thought I was nuts as a kid because I always cheered for the bad guys to win.
I'd also like to point out that the scripts to the "unfilmable" Lord of The Rings trilogy were written by a team och Jackson and two women: Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens

As always, if we want some surprises and new stuff in our cinematic experience it does matter that the writing pool isn't homogenous. That means a diversity of sex, social background, ethnicity what-have-you. Most of the projects you mentioned are pretty unusual compared to the standard fare of a movie year, so maybe having more women involved can help us getting more interesting movies to watch in the future.
I couldn't tell but maybe that's bc they didn't try 2 do 2 men's roles what Hollywood does all 2 often 2 women's roles (2-dimensional). This comment is so typical its almost funny (not) "well the 1 w/red hair has huge cans so i pick her" Jane Goldman's Cosplay look is canceling out her progress bc no one w/that look will b taken seriously-while what a woman looks like shouldn't matter, the reality is it solicits comments like the one I quoted (any doubts he's male & wasn't really listening?)
@helenschmelen It means that creative differences don't matter with a movie like Thor. It's a cash cow and the people who are going to be spending money on it are still going to spend money on it no matter what insignificant differences there are. If Ryan Gosling had Nicholas winding refn fired over creative differences in the movie Drive, that would be significant because creative choices are what will make or break that movie. Those movies are about critical appeal, not money.
@nitrorev386 I can't help but think of the Batman movies and what creative choices did there. Thanks for elaborating on what you meant. I think creative choices are even more important for movies like Thor because I like them much better. I would say creative choices always matter maybe just the stakes are higher. We all know it is possible to ruin movies like Thor. Look at widely hated Predator 2 for example.
I am rather excited to see The Women in Black. I've been waiting to see the film since I saw the trailer for it almost 6 months ago both because the book its based off was rather interesting to read and I'm anxious to see if Mr. Radcliffe can play something other than Harry Potter. You need to do more videos like these Grace, I love seeing the behind the lenses details parts of movies and, more often than not, not thought of topics in modern cinema.
i think that a great female director is Lynne Ramsey, she's scottish (like myself) and recently directed we need to talk about kevin, my pick for film of 2011. have you heard of her, Grace?
Im a huge movie fanatic my only problem is like everything sex is drawn into it. Why does it matter who wrote it or who plays in it or who directs it as long as its a good film. There are many good/excellent directors, actors and writers out there. What they're packing in their pants shouldn't matter to the credit of the film.
I think Diablo Cody is awesome. Jennifer's Body wasn't THAT bad, it was all it needed to be. A Bisexual Teen Hor-Com with Megan Fox. Seriously, what more do you need in a film. And now shes doing the "Evil Dead"? FUCK YEAH!
Don't forget Peter Jackson's wife, Fran Walsh (lady Jackson). She wrote the screenplay for lord of the rings and shes written the screenplay for the hobbit.
how is evil dead with all it's "chauvinist" or dude-centric lines going to play out with a female at the helm, I'm not saying a woman couldn't pay it homage, it's just Sam Raimi is a bit of a loon and a perv. *shrugs*
This was an awesome subject for a video. I hope to see more movie bytes like this in the future. I'm inspired by all these female screenwriters and this seems like encouraging news for the Maleficent movie. Still not sold on Angelina Jolie but I feel a little better. I have not seen the grand majority of these movies but I might keep them in mind now knowing they were written by women. Keep up the great work, Grace!
Maleficient!!! yes! people, she wasnt just pissed because she didnt get invited to the christening. think about it, she attempted to disrupt a major government merger by keeping the 2 heirs from marriage. and the way she casts the thorn-forest spell at the end, calling it 'Stephen's castle' makes you realize she seriously had a personal grudge against the king and was striking back at his child. SO looking forward to discovering motivations like this in the movie
To be honest I'm not looking forward to the Iron Lady. Sure, I like Steep, but a) I've seen that much of her work to be a big fan and b) I really don't like Margaret Thatcher. She's not very popular up in the north of England, where I live, so it'd be a bit .. a bit bad for its overall popularity in England specifically. If they make Thatcher seem like a hero in anyway, it'd be a kick in the teeth for working-class families.
@1994PandaBeth I've not seen the film, but apparently it shows Thatcher in a bad (from my opinion fair) light. Some sad Thatcherites have criticised it already.
@zebazryth Because the title refers to the ghost the main character (Dan Radcliffe) has to face. The ghost's not particularly the main character, so she isn't on the front.
Hi Grace! Yea it's me again leaving you another cute comment! But I think that there should be more female screenwriters and directors out there! Keep up the awesome work Grace! :D
I just hope they don't ruin the formula to The Evil Dead. Keep it a dark comedy gore fest, don't make it some gloomy horror picture. That's not what Evil Dead is.
I doubt I'm alone in saying that I was only familiar with Diablo Cody, it's the name recognition at work, but as a testament to the quality of the writing, I had no idea all those movies were written by women. I have high hoped for The Woman in Black in particular, perhaps because I hope at least one of those kids is able to succeed away from the Potter cloak.
No don't remake the evil dead the second movie was pritty much a remake of the first one. I would rather see the evil dead 4 or part 4 or army of darkness part 2
i'm a dude, and i have been a serious Fan of Jane Goldman's work....she writes quality, and it shows. and Diablo Cody was an ex-stripper? God damn, what a way to turn your career around.
I really don't think it matters if it a man or woman who would write and make movies, everyone has there own thoughts and ideas at to what they want to show and no one should be like women can't do this or that. So, if they can do it then there is no stopping them. EVIL DEAD REMAKE?! Oh boy, I love all three Evil Dead movies and there is no point in trying to remake it, IT IS A CLASSIC
In my opinion, as little as it is, its not the gender of the writer but the product they right. Measuring success in what the out come of your work not that you are male or female.
Oh I do hope Tim Burton will direct Home for Peculiar Children! :D
I had never heard of these women, but now I will remember them! All of the films listed by Jane Goldman they are all great so I hope to see more of her ;)
As for your last question? no i can't tell any of the films were written by woman. but honestly i don't look for it when i go to movie. i just look for a good film, i honestly don't care who made it so long as i enjoy. i only really start to take notice when i see the same name on several films i either love or hate.
The two project you mentioned that i am somewhat interested in are Evil Dead and Maleficent, but for different reasons. I personally don't think that the Evil Dead needs a remake but i am currious to see what they change. still no one is going to be able to replace Bruce Campbell.
I also want to see what they do with Maleficent, since i think she is a great villain, and honest the only redemming part of disney's Sleeping Beauty, but i hated the recent alice movie. but i guess we are all
I'm looking forward to Iron Lady but that's because I love Meryle Streep. Also, I'm liking what little I've heard about Maleficent, can you cover it a little more when you can?
Maleficent I'm intrigued to see a story about her, she was one of the Disney Characters that I have had questions about Maleficent so I am happy Linda Woolverton is taking on this Challenge.
I would see it as "selling out" if female directors only did movies aimed at women. And wasn't the director for Across the Universe a woman; and was that movie just for the Ladies? I look forward to there being more amazing female writers/directors making movies for everybody not just lame sappy chick flicks that don't make a mark in Hollywood.
When I was about 16 I use to think that you had to be some old dude who was sour about life to write a good movie. Now I know that you could be an absolutely stunning woman and STILL write good movies. I'm very excited for some of these and interested in the rest I didn't know about. I'm even more excited knowing that they were written by women. Not because of their gender, but because of the simple fact that anything a man could do a woman does better in high heels.
I really don't care much about the writer's gender but one thing I've noticed is that most of the times in movies I know that are written by women there isn't that "epic" speech the protagonist makes before saving the day, it kinda is more about a reflection of their lives. Anyways, hope more women make it to the writters' best. We movie fans are the ones who get to win
