There's a million of these type of apps out there and not once have I heard of someone breaking their phone. It's not rocket science, just don't be an idiot and let go of the phone.
Just because YOU didn't hear about it, doesn't mean it did NOT happen. Ofcourse no one is going to be an "idiot" and purposely let the phone fly out of their hands. Duh. I'm talking about the cases when it's a accident.
How bout I never drive my car, because obviously I'm going to have a wreck and die if I do. As a matter of fact I'm never gonna leave my house incase absolutely necessary... Between swine flu, car wrecks, and phones flying out of hand life is just way too much.
I don't know a single person who has an iPhone that doesn't have at least 4 or more of these kinds of apps and no not one of them have been thrown from the hand. Anything can happen, so no need to dwell on the negatives all the time eh:)
CLEARLY some things you've named are MORE of a necessity and things that MOST people must do on a regular..day to day to SURVIVE. So these RISK are a normal part of life, and must take. That's NO comparison to buying an application on a phone that simulate you bowling, and requring you to jerk your phone around. Forthermore, I have the 3GS, and my phones gets banged up enough from my normal use. I'm not going to add fuel to the fire. Especially when AT&T and MAC are NOT going to replace it.
Sorry but the majority of the iPhone populous disagrees. These apps are fun, people enjoy them, and they sell - and no their fear does not dictate their decision. Bout damn time my phone can turn into a jump rope or a light saber if I need it :)
