interesting to hear how Steve H developed the guitar part - what a guitarist - but largely unknown outside Yes circles ie; the man in the street...shame... Chris Squire should have written more songs IMO if he was capable of this brilliance..
It's great that now we can actually see how they got all that together. Like Chris Squire's backing vocals - I always loved that about Yes, but with studio footage one can see how those parts are constructed.
I read that the actual church organ part of this song was recorded using phone line. NOT 'over the phone', mind you, but using the phone cables to hook up the equipment, since the Swiss phone system was actually state of the art stuff... and it was all recorded in Switzerland.
Where the hell did this footage come from??? Didn't know this sort of thing existed. This is my favourite Yes track and to see where it all came from is fantastic. Love it. Thanks for posting
@jcmclovin c'mon my man or woman you know I meant chris Wakeman, he was so great, journey to the centre. To me personally he was the no1, ace, f'n keyboard player in art rock EVER! and I know you agree with me, a wizard with yes nothing could've been of better. Yes forever! Benoit David seems like a nice man, but take a hike JON, JON, JON!
wow. at 5:09 Steve Howe plays into the rest. It's cool to see that even these gods of music make mistakes.
which makes me think how awesome it would be to have a video from even earlier in the process, when they still work out ideas. How often do they stop? How do they learn their parts as first composed? do they ever turn down an idea?
Anyway, Parallels is one of the greatest songs created, ever. And Yes is the greatest band. Ever.
Yes with this lineup and Bruford/White Anderson,Howe,Squire,Wakeford they were really a badass band. Steve Howe was such a creative and excellent guitarist. I heard Yes,Genesis,Floyd,Zep and a few other bands was the reason Punk came into being.
Not a Hammond! Mander Pipe Organ. Plus RMI KC1, Birotrons, Mellotron Mk.V. Grand Piano, RMI 368X. plus the Moogs, of course. Rhodes Stage 88. There is a C3 in the rig although not played on this footage which, I believe, was shot by Nigel Luby...
I find it fascinating to watch the evolution of a great piece of music. Sure, it sound rough, but it was polished up to be superb. Who does stuff like this now? Who can do stuff like this?
Yes began to fall apart when they adopted a different writing formula. The best songs were led by Jon Andnerson's vocal melodies. Now they just write with creating mostly riffs first.
HEY CityYoungGuns - you and your fucken bandmates are rookies - When you and your looser friends have 40 years of global rock history then you can have a comment..................fuck off.
I was a keyboardist in a band in the eighties and if I dared to do anything beyond holding a note or chord down, I'd get "Shut it Rick Wakeman". That man killed keyboard innovation for twenty years.
I think the 'Six Wives of Henry VIII' was not what any self respecting rock band wanted to ever play. Did you see the BBC 4 docu on prog rock? ELP should be put on trial and shot for crimes against music.
i think all this and other raw studio sessions highlight the incredible skill these guys had in their prime, and beyond. They electricity running through all of them is absolutely phenomenal, not like the music of the present day.
Yes! Thanks YesMan. Imagine a 12 year old kid playing Yessongs over and over again! That was 25 years ago! I wish we had computers, the internet and YOUTUBE then. I love watching how these guys actually pieced together many of their songs.
It's amazing how from a rehearsed piece it comes together so brilliantly on the final cut. They have the whole finished song in their heads. What insight. I wished they'd shown more of Jon's vocal input though. By the way, thanks YesMan for posting this, you've got a year on me, but we're from the same school of great rock. Remember UFO? The last time in saw Yes was on Jone's Beach Amphitheater on Long Island about 8 years ago. They were great.
It's a small world, especially when you live in this neck of the woods. I would imagined you'd be a Giant fan. They got the shit kicked out of them by Cleveland. I'm not worried though. Manning had a bad night. Wasn't it Wakeman who was playing that night?
I love the last song on this CD. It ends beautifully. It reminds me of days my girlfriend and I (now my wife) would drive through the wintery mountains of upstate NY on our way to a trip to Montreal. Ah..the memories. They don't make bands like this anymore. This CD some of the most awe inspiring and spiritual songs you'll ever hear. Get it, you won't regret it!
i have a very important questio that has been bugging me for some time. does rick put all of his keyboards in th P.A or does he have amps for all of them? your answers will be greatful.
Do you just think he comes up with guitar parts like that? This is a rehearsal. It's meant to be practiced and made better for the final album. I think it's pretty good for being improvised on the spot.
I keep forgetting about this song and then I hear it again and it's like hearing it for the first time. So beautiful, even without that bitchin' pipe organ.
Steve Howe is one great lead guitar player. His style rocks something fierce, thank God he's still around, and the rest of the band (I guess they didn't mess up with the drugs, huh) so we can still see them.
These aren't rehearsals - they're tracking the album in studio - WOW! This is amazing! Does this exist for other albums - like Close to the Edge! Very Cool!
Thank you. This video is much better than the one I have, and that is in You tube also. Please post the Anderson - Wakeman rehersals at the Church Organ & Awaken
Love Jon's eyes at the end...too much - er - herbal tea perhaps

@LHHig and @artrock101
It is Jon Anderson here who IS playing a Rickenbacker, 6 string that is.... so artrock is right.
Squire, famous for his Ric bass playing is playing a Fender jazzbass on this recording....
cheers people and enjoy this celestial music.
FHGioM 2 years ago
Hey artrock1, John Lennon didn't play bass. Paul McCartney did.
