  • clear, pure sound......

  • The people who state Minnie has no vocal control are biased non-musicians. A master like Charles Stepney would not have worked with a sub-par vocalist, Phyllis Hyman (a master stylist with control) said she learned about using range from Minnie. She blew Roland Rahshan Kirk's mind when he first heard her. Not to mention Minnie could do all this live, no studio wizardry necessary :) <3

  • @MsMerising - Sigh! You speak the truth - Respect!

  • I think that comparing the two is absolute stupidity, what you should be doing is appriciating the song.

  • at first i said to myself--"is that minnie's voice at the intro part? ahaha...lol"

then i watched the full vid,, i felt confused,, where's minnie's voice?where's the song?

is that her whistle? the whole song??(i mean the middle part of the whole vid)

btw--the latter part sounds kinda scary....

  • Mariah is good, but she ain't no minnie. Also, Minnie was screaming even when she was dying of cancer and never missed a note... Can Mariah say the same??

  • FIRST OF ALL MINNIE RIPERTON Paved the WAY For singers such as Mariah Carey being the first of her kind to release that ability in her music!!!!!!! THIS WAS AMAZING And ms.cannon GOT NOTHING ON IT ( not saying ms.cannon can't do it) BUT Minnie did it BEFORE HER!!!!!! R E S P E C T

  • Mariah Learnt from Minnie just as MJ learnt form James Brown!

  • Omg her voice is soo beautiful! I hate the description! Why would you say that? This video isn't about Mariah or Christina but about Minnie! Just enjoy the music and stop comparing them! I'm a mariah fan but I absolutely love Minnie! It's possible you know

  • Sorry Fans Mariah just can't do it like this!!!!!-Ever heard anything like this on all those X-mas Albums?

  • @tabbykat677 Right On! Minnie could sing notes higher than a Theremin!!!

  • @tabbykat677

    You ain't never lied... <3

  • Sorry Fans Mariah just can't do it like this!!!!!

  • i love mariah carey but minnie will always ben the best:) MAY SHE REST IN PEACE

  • I wish the guitar wasn't in the recording. Her voice doesn't need any help.

  • whether you prefer minnie or mariah i think we can all agree that they're both better than christina. christina's whistles sound too forced

  • i've never hated on minnie. i love her and not just because she was one of mariah's biggest influences but honestly how could you not like someone with a voice like that? the way she hits her whistles with no visible sign of strain? she's incredible! plus she's so adorable! to be honest i like mc's whistles better because they're more controlled and in tune. minnie goes sharp sometimes. and mc does different tricks with her whistles(see DFAU, AIYM, YGM, IWTKWLS, LTW, TBO)

  • Dude... how disrespectful is it to put Mariah Carey at the same line as the amazing and the talented Minnie Riperton.

Honestly, I don't hate Mariah Carey, I like her but I totally disagree that she's "better than" Minnie, who has a voice of an angel. It's wrong to compare Minnie to ANYONE because she's incomparable. She is beyond unbelievable End of.

Mariah Carey is unique in her own way, I'm glad she took on Ms Riperton's influence. (:

  • It is not merely Minnie' s incredible range that makes her so utterly astonishing and incomparable, it is moreover the immense sensitivity and immeasurable creativity, with which sings every phrase, every note and every breath of every song she so selflessly graced us with.

  • It is not merely Minnie' s incredible range that makes her so utterly astonishing and incomparable, it is moreover the immense sensitivity and immeasurable creativity, with which sings every phrase, every note and every breath of every song she so selflessly graced us with.

  • As the song goes ~ Minnie, Minnie, Minnie, Minnie ~ MINNIE.

There is simply no competition herein, and there never will be.

Mariah ~ the princess. Minnie ~ the Queen or rather more like ~ the ANGEL.

  • I like Mariah but there is only 1 Minnie Riperton. No one can touch her.

  • People look to much into who can sing the highest note in music. Sure range is important, but there are many more factors that play into it. Singing is about tonal quality, clarity, roughness, beauty, and diversity, breathing and control. But you can't compare voice, because everyone is different. Can't we all just enjoy the music without all the comparisons? :/

  • Mariah could never register celestially as high as the great Minnie Ripperton. NO ONE WILL EVER!!!!! ......... STOP PLAYING!!!! That's a voice from God Himself. She didn't belong here that's why she left

  • That was impressive.

  • Incredible, super human

  • as comparisons between Minnie and Maria go I'd say Minnie had more tasteful Melisma(the vocal fluctuating note thing that Whitney does.. and does.....and d....and..... zzz)

  • 0 dislikes.....duh shes amazing

  • What a great singer knows is that it doesn't matter if you can do it , it matters when you do it. Frankly, MC adds embellishments that are gratuitous, make no sense in the song. No control becomes irritating over the course of a song. Can't listen to an entire MC album. Oversung for ears that were schooled by people who perfected their art before they took it on the road. Sorry, I just can't pay for your rehearsals, divas. Others, of course are entitled to see or rather hear it differently.

  • Don't forget Mariah only wanted to do the whistle notes because of Minnie lets not forget that.

  • I don't hate Minnie she is the whistle note queen her gave however is an insult to her legend it should have her vocal range and say the woman who started the whistle notes. Both Mariah and Minnie are legends and will go down in history and both are better than Georgia Brown she is flat and screams when she try's to hit the notes.

  • Very good! Such a loss of talent

  • I think comparing both singers is sooooo dumb .... I also dont get the fascination in the whistle register.... come on peeps ... Is it about how high someone can sing or ...isnt about how someone actually delivers a song and how that person makes you feel once you've heard it ???

  • to put all this to rest (as I'm quite sure MC has heard of these comparisons)..it would be good if MC would do one of Minnie's songs. Even Whitney did "I'm every woman"..of course giving props to Chaka Khan, at the end of that song....

  • Only minnie could do it this way, her high pitch is more control, which takes her off the rector scale; Minnie was unqiue and others follow in her footstep.

  • Stop hanging battles where there is no meaning to fight....I am sure MC is respectul of MR, who inspired her so much and is part of her childhood. They are both Divas, with their own style, technique and time...and both are timeless.

  • Minnie, to me was better. Mariah, she's good....but Minnie, just got that one.

  • O......M......G!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I wasn't expecting that.

Otherworldly....but I guess if you were singing about God, you sing the best you could ;-)

    R.I.Paradise Minnie <3

  • jesus!!! what a voice

  • Minnie is amazing.

No point of even comparing Mariah carey to her.

Mariah cant sing a whole song in Whistle register like Minnie riperton.

and Mibabiiant is right when he said she does it so effortlessly.

she keeps her eyes open dosn't hold her ear.

there no type of strain she just lets it out as if she were speaking.

  • @PhoenixFlare12 haha(: why did you say that ? cause the song bliss from mariah carey was just like this if not longer then this and minnie did only a little bit of this song in high notes and if its a whole song in whistle that makes the better whistler than i gues you must think georgia brown is the best in the world ! i love minnie but when you make remarkes you need to verify dont ! cause you cant do it either !

  • @AndreiTaiapaSmith I love mriah carey and minnie, but when someone did it as good as minnie, there is no topping there is only standing beside or behind her. Mariah carey has her amazing vocal characteristcs just as minnie does. Minnie Riperton is he best at what she created and that is all in a nut shell. And if you are saying I cannot go up into the whistle register, you're wrong. =]

  • @PhoenixFlare12 haha(: i agree with you but mariah is outstanding for someone to atleast be near minnie is a big achievement so mariah should be a honorable person. and uhm i do not think i said anything about you and whistle register as i can myself hit whistle register and would love to hear you sing in whistle !

  • @PhoenixFlare12 oh(: and i forgot there is a song called angle the prelude which is another amazing song from mariah and it is only in whistle register !

  • Comment removed

  • @Mi6Ko0o You 17 and it shows....it's a generational thing baby. Yes Minnie could run however that was not the style 30 years ago. Runs don't make you soulful.

  • Wow.............

  • no offense, by why would anyone want to do an entire song in the whistle range? You can't understand any of the words w/o the lyrics and it does get a bit boring.

  • @crazy2hazy yeah i found this technically impressive but dreadful and boring at the same time. also im not a fan of guitars so that didnt help.

  • do not compare them. because minnie is mariah's idol.

  • ok no need to compare minnie with mariah because they both have very unique gifts given to them that most singers do not NATURALLY posess. minnie came out before mariah and she always says that minnie was the influence for her whistle. minnie is amazing and came first, but mariah is freakishly amazing as well. mariah is inspired and minnie would be honored.

  • You guys should look at some of her interviews or live performances where she hits those "stratosphere" notes. She does it so effortlessly. I mean in some cases, well, all that I have seen, she shows no strain or intense face. She just opens her mouth and sings. Wonderful.

  • Ms. Riperton is one of my vocal icons. However, I never heard this rendition before, WOW! Her voice in this piece was so otherworldly. Her sweet spirit and angelic voice was truly a gift from God.

  • youre a bad B**** (no offense ms. riperton) when you can SING in this range. hitting notes in it is fine but te whole thing is done in that range. unbelievable

  • All this talk about whistle notes and people fail to mention Elkie Brooks. That woman has a mean whistle note on her. It's more like a howl! O.O

  • That's right, teach these fucking Mariah stans their lesson. MINNIE IS THE WHISTLE ORIGINAL, NOT MARIAH.

  • Yma Sumac was doing whistles LONG before Minnie and Mariah. Minnie is not the original anything.

  • She's not a pop/RnB singer, and she didn't bring it to the mainstream like Minnie and Mariah, so don't be bringing some opera singer into this, and plus, Minnie and Mariah hit higher notes than Yma Sumac, so don't be trying to down Minnie. Like I said, MINNIE IS THE WHISTLE QUEEN! Fuck whay everybody else say.

  • Yma Sumac is a classical singer not a opera singer. Big difference so get your facts straight. I'm not trying to argue that Minnie is the whistle queen. You said Minnie is the whistle original when she wasn't even the first to record a whistle note on a track. I'm not even sure Yma Sumac was but it sure wasn't Minnie. I'd be pissed as well if somebody proved me wrong for spouting out incorrect info. It's ok.

  • Wow that is totally unlike any other silent night I have ever heard! :-O Very surreal and almost inhuman (in a good way). But then Minnie was totally unlike any other singer, totally her own pioneering self. Just sublime.

  • How did she not just shatter singing this? :P

  • Let's try not to make unfair comparisons of each individuals talents. So many things impact vocal abilities; breath control, nasal qualities and tonalty, etc. They are all exceptional in their own unique ways. That being said, has anyone every heard of Lily Pons or Yma Sumac?

  • I love Minnie... But yea I just checked out Yma Sumac's music... She was amazing!!!!

  • When I first heard this song years ago, I liked to have died hearing a voice like this. Minnie will always be in my heart. Her music got me through some really tough times in my life.

  • Ecouch17, what a dumb post. I won't even put Christina in the same category as Mariah either, instead I'll put her in the POWER category with Whitney. Mariah is great and I'm actually a fan, but just because she penned most of her music does not mean it's the best or stand the test of time. Plenty of Mariah songs I don't listen to because it was mainly good for that year! Minnie's voice, her music is all timeless. Alot of that 70s music's timeless, that's why it's sampled.

  • LOL u just don't get it...it's about VOCAL quality...not songwriting or number of hits...

And, dude, 70's classics are timeless.

  • just for kicks...I clicked on Mariah's version to be fair about it and listened for a bout 12 sec compared to this!!

  • LOL

  • After all the debates...She is and will always be the best!!! (that we will see in this lifetime anyway...and THIS proves it!!!!!!) Name me ANYONE ELSE that can do this???? I mean really. People, you shouldnt even respond to those who put her up against ANYONE ELSE!!

It's a waste of typing and not what Minnies spirit was about!

  • Mariah Carey DID NOT create this style of singing. What the hell was she during Minnie's prime, around 4???

  • mariahs tone is shit sorry guys minnie was the original and the best r.i.p this is amazing where can i get this song i love it i have her singing silent night on her chess years cd but this is different version where i get it? x

  • Mariah blew her cords out, sounds like a 30 year smoker when she talks now.

  • That was awesome. If you listen, she sings every word. Her singing this song is beautiful.

  • Around 2:32 there is some kinda voice of a man making a humming sound, only lasts a few seconds... I love Minnie and wish she was still here, such a wonderful voice

  • minnie really hit whistle notes a little bit more effortlessly than mariah, and she's mariah's idol, why hate on her, anyway i love mariah's voice better.

  • Minnie Riperton & Mariah Carey are both talented legends! END OF STORY.

  • Sparks0245 - Actually Mariah has done even BETTER than this - listen to her song Bliss, she not only does the high notes, way higher than this, but she does them while singing WORDS. This silent note is just Minnie doing high notes, in Mariah's BLISS she sings words while hitting high notes.

  • this is really scary

  • Wow! that was wonderful!

  • It is a fact that minnie has an higher octave range and able to hold for longer periods of time. I think she's 5 or 6 octaves..something out of this world and belived to be more at it's highest points. However...Mariah has more control. I think due to her mother being an opera singer. She grew up with training in the home. But what's impressive is Mariah is an alto singer! Minnie's family was of the arts also and she did study opera. Both them are without a doubt are absolutely incredible!

  • Do you know? Just correct it Ole Pedy 1 and move on... Stupid is as stupid does...

You must be a girl...LOL Or just a bitch!

By the way I just took a look online ...

And it reads she's best known for her 5 1/2 vocal octave range. And I've seen her say that on TV B4 back-in-the-day. I didn't remember when I wrote that and didn't know I was being graded...by someone that doesn't even know themselves. Maybe you should go ask her...LOL

  • ok dudette/No facts Man. I'm a distant friend of this family, her nephew(his niece named after her) says this happens all the time & dont respond. I have a 2 octave range, know what that means. Didnt think so. I cant sing...but it was discovered when I would try to copy her. you've got ears...2 or 3 max? LOL I guess u think Georgia Brown is 2 or 3 too. Look it up,write me back if u feel the need. But I can SNEEZE at 1 octave...LOL

  • Well im being classicly trained so i must know what octaves mean better than you... coz the octaves measurement really started with classical music...and no Georgia brown has like 7 octaves because she can cover notes from the 2snd octave to the 9th octave which makes her have those octaves....well minie can reach the 6th octave and some notes on the 7th but not more than a C7 and she doesnt have those low notes..her range starts at the 4th octave and goes up to the 7th so it makes 3

  • OMG! "...her range starts at the 4th octave..."...

wtf are you talking about!, she could go up into the 8th octave (teach me how to fly and other Rotary Connection songs), and she hits a D3 on "stick together" (From the stay in love LP)...

She is well known for being one of the womans who pionereed on the rare 5 octave vocal range

  • I will not reply to u anymore because ur just saying stupid things. SHE CANT GO TO THE 8th OCTAVE COZ SHE DID NEVER WENT TO THE GUINESS BOOK IF SHE WAS CAPABLE OF GOIN TO THE 8TH OCTAVE SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN THE HIGHEST NOTE UNTIL GEORGIA WHAT DIDNT HAPPEN. SO GET OVER IT. IM NOT WASTING ANY MORE TIME WITH YOU.

  • Comment removed

  • man, this is the first time you reply to me.

and (supposedly) georgia brown can sing a G10.

    But whatever.

  • you are not correct at all. minnie said her voice teacher marrion jeffry said to her she had 5.5 octaves. go listen to only if youre dreaming she does the low notes too on the background. btw she went higher than c7 you can hear it on ruby tuesday live.

and for your information. minnie never recorded against the scale, she wasnt interested in wich note she could hit, she just wanted to sing

  • even if she could go up to a C7 she would have never had 5 octaves because she cannot come to low notes in maximum she could reach like an A3 and im not even sure. so stop it she does not have 5 octaves she probably has 3 or 3,5 which is already great.

  • wow

  • Beautiful, just... (sighs softly with contentness) beautiful.

  • we dont hate minnie. we venerate her! her whistle registers are so superhuman, doesnt sound so human at all!!! without her, mariah would never have explored in this vocal range.

pls never instill hate among the youtube viewers. please.

and dont be embittered if mariah seems to be able to surpass minnie's abilities, because id ever mariah really does, what a proud teacher minnie would have been, had she known that she taught mariah her technique.

  • could not had said it better myself

  • i just dont like mariah as a person

i like minnie riperton more beacause shes among the very few female singers with no sex appeal to her voice

she simply trys to covey the message she wants to put across

and to me thats what being a 'real' singer is all about

  • @mtanute Is true Mariah did learn Minnie technique but you have to acknowledge that Mariah made Minnie's technique into something new and fresh. You can't really compare Minnie and Mariah both are wonderful!

  • OMG this is just amazing

  • This is great, really enjoyed this.

    Thanks

    100*********

  • she can control it....i love her voice too...

  • NO ONE CAN DO IT BETTER!

  • Minnie was one of Mariah's musiccal influence along with gospel artist and hip-hop artist.

    Minnie died too young :(

I love the song where Minnie goes high in whistle than glide down slowly...i forgot the name of the song, can someone help me ???

  • "Adventures In Paradise". Her amazing voice raises pitch like a tea kettle going off...then, slowly descends like the sound from a bomb being dropped by a B-1 Bomber in the ending.

  • thank you, your description is so true, her whistle voice in that song is amazing.

  • there is no battle...you cannot compare trash like MC with the best singer from/ in HEAVEN MINNIE RIPERTON!!!!!

  • much better than MC's Oh Holy night.. And take note, MC wasn't already do that in live!!!

  • Funny...I can't seem to find Minnie doing this song live...

  • OMG!! i wish i could do that!!!!

  • yeah right....LOL

  • "Bliss" it's a song...look it up.

  • omg georgia brown squeals and yells. Yes she can hit high notes but she can incorporate it into her songs.

  • btw she is in Minnie

  • No! one has ever done a song in High Notes but Minnie.. oh then came the Georgia brown girl.she can hit some High Ass notes and that's it she can't sing that well to me.

  • it's true, she has a terrible voice, the only reason she's famous is because of her range

  • Does anybody have "Her Chess Years"? The minnie riperton compilation?...i really need it, i have all her discography and someone could exchange with me...!

  • I have all her stuff..do you have the live concert she did with Rotary conection?

  • I have the Live Rotary Connection album. Do u have actual footage? If so, please tell me where I can get it.

  • you all are so stupid minnie is the best of all high notes no one can beat her no one end of story

  • Minnie Riperton & Mariah Carey are the best & BTW im sure mariah could also sing this

  • Minnie was a master with her voice. The people today hitting high notes to prove they can lack the discipline to do what Minnie did for a living. I don't care if Carey or Georgia Brown or some yahoo living in a hut halfway around the world can hit higher notes, none of them can touch Minnie for overall skills.

Not only that, Minnie wasn't limited to one genre. "Inside My Love" was a slow jam ahead of its time and "Reasons" and "Every Time He Comes Around" could have been rock 'n roll hits.

  • I think you meant to say, "Mariah Carey's entire voice ain't shit compared to the beautiful songbird notes of Minnie Riperton".

  • You are one sick mf to go around disrespecting one of the greatest legends of the music industry in order to praise up a clueless wannabe of Minnie.

When Mariah Carey stops acting like some immature headcase skank and focuses on entertaining a more mature demographic group with her voice--instead of her looks--she might make it to Minnie's level, one day.

Until then, she needs to grow up--like your insignificant punk ass.

  • Nah...you're totally confused. That sounds more like you having a flashback to when your mom fantasized being "Employee of the Month" and getting on TV working the window at the same BK you struggle at.

As far a Minnie being remembered, if not for Minnie, Carey wouldn't have a role model to aspire to sing like--so, I'd say Minnie is well-remembered. Also, why do so many want to jock samples and attempt remakes of her songs if she isn't remembered as a legend?

    Lay off the crack.

  • It's ridiculously stupid mental cases like you that should be forced to ask for freedom of speech.

Why don't you go outside and play a game of "Hide and GFY" and stop polluting this wonderful comment area for a Minnie classic with your bs, you stupid mf? Preferably, on a busy highway.

  • avwhite yor a fucking retard the only thing thats obscure is that your on this site rooting for a cunt. refain and dont reflux you weard little peasant hahahahaaaaaaa

  • Who does Mariah cite as the #1 influence on her vocal technique?

    Minnie Riperton. CASE CLOSED.

  • clearly you have nothing better to do

  • That was amazing!!

  • whitney beats them all. as for just a strong belting voice. whitney can belt throughout a whole damn song. as minnie can sing in that high register throughout a whole song. HIGHER VOCALS dont make a great singer. some people deemed sade the best voice. and she doesnt have much range. but yeah, whitney can blow in a sharp head voice within the first 5 seconds of a song. listen to anything from whitney 1985 - 1992 live. its magic.

  • Well if higher vocal doesn't make you a better singer neither does belting. Whitney is indeed one of, if not, the greatest singer ever, but Minnie has opened the door for many singers.

  • Whitney is one of the greatest if not the greatest singer of the late 80s, however, overall, Minnie is a better singer than Whitney and this has nothing to do with record sales!

  • Great, great point.

  • I love Minnie, but this is irritating...

  • That was breathtaking! Very beautiful.

  • Celine is a better singer than Whitney actually cause of consistency both live and studio. 2nd, not everyone can sing in the whistle register and FYI Mariah can express whether she sings low, middle or in whistle register. 1 can't escape the fact that the moment Mariah entered the scene, Whitney's fame quickly waned away and the only ones who think Whitney is still great are Whitney fanatics!

  • Well you can't really say that about Whitney and Mariah, cuz "The Bodyguard" single-handedly outsold Mariahs first 3 albums. And her next 2 or 3 albums I believe all sold in the excess of 10mil copies.

  • The Bodyguard was probably the most notable exception as Whitney was on the decline from 1990 onwards. Also I wrote my last comment in response to Chimier who insisted both here and elsewhere that Whitney is better than Minnie & Mariah. Minnie & Mariah had more vocal potential than Whitney ever did, which is something I hope all Whitney fanatics finally accept!

  • Whitney was not on the decline. Some of her later albums outsold Mariahs. Sadly album sells dont reflect talent and that's what some MC fans need to realize as they continuously bring up albums sells as justification. Whitney has time and time again been slated as the greatest singer ever. Put Whitney and Mariah up together in their primes, and sadly Whitney would be preferred.

  • Not necessarily, Minnie can express herself better than Whitney in singing live and studio with or without the whistle register and I'm surprised you'd make such a statement actually. If all the singers in history were all equally scrutinised, realistically, Minnie & Mariah had more of a chance coming up on top than Whitney, not that Whitney is that bad or anything. Luckily for Whit, many other singers who are better than her are either under-rated or undiscovered!

  • I wonder whether these same people who said Whitney is the greatest would still say it if they listened to many other singers in and out of the US over the last few decades... I know listening to many other singers besides Whitney such as Minnie & Lani Misalucha for example changed my view of Whitney...

  • I agree. They are all great singers in their own right, but each has notable differences from each other. For the record, Mariah was the most intensely promoted artist in Columbia records history. They (her former husband) spent millions to get her out and known to the world. That certainly had an impact on her record breaking sales too.

  • Whitney is more resonant and soulful even though they both have similar inflections and both use the gospel, rnb, pop format.

  • both mariah and minnie are one of the greatest singers of all time. because of their vocal range and abilities they have a large fan base and respect for their work. they shouldnt be compared but acknowledged to be in a league of their own

  • wow! very astonishing......

OMG! she's not a human! an allien perhaps!

    really amazing!

  • you all should here her do Ruby Tuesday live on the Rotary Conection Cd

  • do you know in wich cd it is,,,,

  • For some odd reason and no disrespect to Minnie, but hearing her sing this song like that scares me. It's unbelievable that she can do that but I have no choice because I just heard it.

maybe it's the "kill bill" sounding way they played the song.

    Anyway, R.I.P. Minnie!

  • Personally, Minnie & Mariah are the best of the best in terms of vocal control and expression in pop music. Whitney, Celine, Christina etc., are no where near on the same level as these two vocal legends!

  • One notable difference between Minnie and all the other whistle register singers, including Mariah, is her ability to enunciate (pronounce words or phrases while in the whistle register). Look at Minnie's live version of Lovin You...when she says..."more than just..." while in the whistle register. You can clearly hear the words being said. Mariah and others can reach the register and do the trills, but in none of their songs have I heard them enunciate words and phrases!Only Minnie enuncaites!

  • I have to disagree slightly on this cause Mariah has enunciated the word "bliss" in the whistle register but that was probably just a one off! Yma Sumac does however rival both Minnie & Mariah cause unlike these 2, Sumac has done a double-trill in the whistle register.

  • Yma yes, Mariah not exactly. In Bliss, u don't quite hear the n in on & on. U can tell she's saying it bc of the chorus. It doesn't take anything away from MC...I love them both.

  • "a word"...If you listened to all her albums, you'd know that Minnie enunciates entire phrases, not just single words. Plus, she sustains her notes longer than the singers who idolize her like Mariah and Chante. She was a trained opera singer and does real trills and coloratura as opposed to the pseudo operatic trills by Mariah and others. Being a vocal coach, I can tell you the real differences.

  • You are right, plus it is a rare thing to be trained in that register, because most people back then thought it wasn't fit for singing, so she had the rare fortune of finding a coach who saw her talent and developed it.

  • What u said is dead on. Mariah isn't even a true coloratura. Her fans don't understand she's pop musics version of a coloratura. Minnie demonstrated true operatic chops & blended it well with r&b, rock & jazz. Minnie's notes didn't sound strained live as some other whistle register singers. Her notes can soar over an orchestra nice & full. She octave hopped without losing the substance of the song. Basically, she sang in whistle, others simply hit impressive notes. Did I say that correct Robb?

  • That was right on point mistermilkman: "Basically, she sang in whistle, others simply hit impressive notes." This is not dissing other singers, it just shows what sets Minnie apart from others. Every singer/performer has a characteristic that sets him or her apart from other singers. Understand that this does not mean that one singer is better than the other...but there are certain unique skills that some singers possess that others do not. For Minnie, it's "singing" in the whistle register.

  • mariah does real trills as well...so do many other singers like whitney and christina.....and both with the exception of christina do coloratura

  • Who freaking cares about whistle register? Whitney and Celine are on the level of Minnie and Mariah, becasue they have control of their voices (Whitney can flip in and out of registers doing vocal runs and belting) and both have two of the most powerful voices of all time. Minnie doesn't have a powerful voice like them. And Mariah's only vocal expression is her whistle. Whitney, Celine and Minnie express real emotion when the sing.

  • I must agree with u on that. I think Mariah has a great voice, but u hit it dead on on a musical level. Minnie, Celine & Whitney can evoke the emotion of the songs they sing. That's 1 thing Mariah fans don't realize was under scrutiny. Although her high notes were impressive, they weren't expressive. When singing in the whistle register, Minnie had that on lock down.

  • This si because Mariah has become stuck in her own wrld of achieving record sales status and has realised all she has to do is put a little bit of melisma on a beat and voila you have a hit! She does not invest in noteworthy music anymore. Whitney had become this way as well but not as badly as Mariah
